@3tallblonds - Yesterday, when I was reading the list of launch dates, I noticed your name was missing and wondered where you’d gone. Welcome back!

@cakeisgreat - I’m happy to hear that your D is feeling better!

Thanks y’all for the banking advice. I think I will have D open an account locally and just put a little money in there for cash withdraws. I figure she’ll mainly use her debit card tied to her Wells checking. I still feel like there’s so much left to do! Yikes!

We also got D the MacBook Pro. Her screen was cracked on her iPhone 5 so they replaced her phone while we were at the Apple store. Depending on reception, I may need to switch cell carriers once D gets to campus so she may end up with a new phone too.

Have spent the last hour plus catching up on all the news, and also appreciate all the advice on packing, safes, and id docs. Wow, hard to believe that a year ago, most of our kids were just starting to think about submitting applications, with no idea where they’d end up, and here we are now, all in the move-in phase now (either having just completed it, in the midst of it, or preparing for it).

@cakeisgreat - so glad to hear your D’s fever finally broke! Will keep her in my prayers for a quick, complete recovery!

@calla1 - so glad everying went smoothly on move-in day, one elevator was working, and most of all, that your DS sounds so happy! Getting teary-eyed, knowing I’ll be missing my D terribly, but also so thankful to know she’s very happy.

@AvonHSDad - love the idea of the post-it note with money attached!

@chrysanthMum - my D’s school listed computer requirements, based on student’s major, so you might want to check on your school’s website if you haven’t already. We also ended up going with the Macbook Pro.

Thank you all for your information. We looked up on College website and decided to go with Mac-Pro, now deciding between 13" vs 15" and 256G vs 512G of flash storage. D thinks 13" is going to be enough, it certainly is lighter than 15". We will decide something today and buy.

@2014novamom, D is used to leaving stuff everywhere too, I am hoping everything will work out fine.

Just returned from vacation and trying to catch up on reading this thread. We just bought the text books and paid the fees from Vanderbilt. Now we are definitely in the mode of shopping and packing for the moving date in about a week.

@2014novamom – I trust Mossberg (and miss reading his WSJ columns), but I think Sept 9th is the media announcement day. Rumor has it that that there will be two different sizes and I think mid-Oct is still the date they will be available to ship/purchase in store. My tech-obsessed family members keep me posted on all things Apple, although the Surface Pro has attracted a bit of attention lately.

@chrysanthMum – my son had a 13 inch originally and moved to a 15 inch MBP two years ago. It is considerably larger and heavier, but he has used it as a desktop, as in, it rarely leaves the house. I am curious to see how he finds the weight and size at college where I think he plans to carry it around. We purchased a new backpack that has a separate enclosure for the laptop but I am still encouraging the use of the slipcase he has.

Putting off college packing until after final family vacation. Can’t believe some are already moved in!

@CT1417 yes, you’re right that is likely announcement day. Which means some folks will start lining up shortly thereafter!

DS opted for the 13" MBP. His best friend has a 15" one that they have used at school for group projects, etc. and familiarity with its size and heft is what swayed DS towards the 13".

Just bought the MacBook Air (very small!) and his first smart phone (iPhone). Buying that stuff and getting the phone plan has worn me out! Kid has a big job in getting up to speed on the tech stuff (didn’t even know how to text!). Luckily we have weeks to go because he’s not into packing or cleaning his room at all yet.
Added S to the list for 8/25 …

DS ordered his textbooks today. $600. Ouch. That was in fact what UVM estimated in their COA and I told him if he managed to spend less, we’d give him the cash, but he actually went over by 2.50 or so. He freaked out because the book store was “sold out” of the Honors College packet, but I told him not to worry, they would surely get more as every single student in the Honors College is required to take the class and would need the packet, and they know exactly how many students that is. We will have him actually call the bookstore (the horror!) to find out what the story is if they don’t show up online in the next week or so. (The price listed is $0 so I don’t know what that will actually cost, but I’m guessing it’s not really free, so that will add to his total.)

We’re making him clean his room including cleaning out his closet before he goes. He’s not happy.

The textbooks I ordered/rented from Amazon arrived today so it is really starting to get real around here! He also has an order to pick up,from the campus bookstore – stuff like specific lab books and course materials produced by the professors not available elsewhere. I spent some time comparison shopping and amazon beat every other seller almost every time, and with my prime, I pay nothing for shipping and still get them in 2 days. I ended paying $450 or so for books, but he still has his seminar class to buy for.

I ordered d’s books online from Neebo, and was surprised how much I saved (I googled a coupon code). The books were here super-fast too. I’ve never ordered from there before, but it will definitely be my go-to now. I was also lucky to find the few novels she needed super cheap on half.com.

@2018dad - Yes, Chicago is on quarter system. He’s bummed bc all his friends will be gone and he’ll be alone for a month. Plus his breaks dont line up well with any of his friends. Its something we didn’t really think about before now. I told him to make friends at school with people from the NY metro area for the future.

They will all be home during the holidays though @toots13

Room and roommate assignment came today! My son has talked to his roommate on the phone. They are both Eagle Scouts and did theater in high school. My son said they like the same TV shows and he said they seem like a really good match. Pretty remarkable since Michigan does no screening at all- not even “What time do you go to bed?” and “Are you a slob or a neatnik?” He said the roommate’s parents are “down with springing for a TV” so I told him to let them know we’ll rent the microfridge (refrigerator with microwave attached to it). The rental place delivers them right to their room before they move in so that will be one less thing for us to move and deal with!

I’m on the Princeton campus right now for a workshop. Lots of prospectives, summer campers. Those were the days!
Sleeping in a dorm room – now I’m no longer jealous my son gets to go to college.

Was in a Princeton dorm a few years ago when S-2011 spent a week there at a summer baseball camp. No A/C in the rooms and the showers were in the basement. Not the greatest dorm experience but the campus is beautiful.

D got her class schedule and is working on buying her books. S always bought his books at a book store near campus, but this thread has enlightened me about discount book shopping. So Amazon and Neebo? Any other suggestions?
