All classes before noon were cancelled today, so DS got the whole day off because he is done at 11:30 on Fridays.
DS finally got his request in for a dorm next year. It is before the due date and he doesn’t expect to learn of his assignment until after spring break. There is a lot of snow on the ground in Boston - DS is looking forward to spring break in the desert.
It was a record -17 (actual temp - not wind chill) in Cleveland this morning but with little wind (didn’t need any additional chilling effect!!) Nearly every school and college in the metro area was closed part or all day. Even the county admin buiding was closed today. Near 30 predicted for Saturday with 3 - 5 inches of snow and then more deep freeze on Sunday. With the lake frozen over the microclimate along the shoreline won’t see summer until June or July!!! ![]()
My son said that his school (U of Alabama in Huntsville) closed Friday at noon, because of the impending ice/snow storm. The roads in Northern Alabama were a disaster. Ice covered. Lots of accidents. The only place open for dinner off campus,it seemed, was Waffle House! Fortunately, the temps will rise today, so things will be much better.
Meanwhile, my son needs to head to the drug store. Has another head cold, and he’s out of meds.
My employer never closes, at least not under the current president. We did once under a previous leader. The students built a large snow fort on the mall and had pizza delivered to it.
The students live at a residential college, but the professors, staff, campus security, and people serving their lunch and cleaning their bathrooms do not.
Well, I’ve come back to “catch up.” Want to just say, after a stellar first semester, my Ds too, are finding 2nd semester not as charming. Love their school but the fun that some of their classmates are having in entertainment majors is appealing to them. Bright lights, big city seems to be drawing them away from science. Hmmmm. Trying to be supportive and not the practical nut that I lean towards.
Oh and forgot to mention D3 has started her college search with her dad last week. I couldn’t go bc I was saving vacation. They flew south, drove 2K miles and saw 5 schools. Is this really starting all over again? The 30 colleges we saw with Twin Ds did not meet D3’s criteria. Really? ugh.
Long time no post.
Count my daughter on the second semester blues. My daughter is doing good relatively speaking. She started a job that more like an internship. But the reality of college and winter in Ithaca is finally kicked in. She now realize that she really hate snow and missed the outdoor lifestyle that she had in SoCal. She’s not doing well on one of her class (Spanish II) and every time that she skype us, she complains about it. On the other hand, she’s really doing well on her other classes and exceptionally well on her CS and Math classes.
I think my DD2 was so scared first semester that she didn’t have time to notice all the scars and blemishes of college life. Once she knew she wasn’t going to flunk out, she began to complain a little more about her roommates and the idiots she had to do a group project with. This semester started with a lot of complaining, but now she’s too busy again with her sport in season and classes getting harder to complain.
DD1 loved everything about college in the fall except her major. She’s sticking with it for now, but already wants to take a semester off to go do a Disney internship. I’m not supporting that in any way, and I don’t think she’ll have the follow through to make it happen. I was particularly peeved because I’ve been working on taxes and FAFSA and other not fun stuff for her benefit, and now she wants a break?
3tallblonds - 2K miles? Where did they drive to AFTER flying there? Florida to Texas and back? That’s nuts. I’d make D3 to tell you 3 reasons she would attend any school before visiting.
I just calculated, 2044 miles to be exact. She and my husband had a grande time. Could have been less than 2K except they showed up at one school only to find out they were supposed to be at another that day so they hopped in the car, drove 140 miles and were only 15 mins late. The 5 schools they visited were just right for her. The schools we visited with twin Ds previously were all completely different. I take D3 to Texas and CA in March. Bonus is that we end up seeing twin Ds in the university’s big spring musical.
Oh Disney internship. Remind me NOT to mention that to my girls.
I keep trying to tell people from SoCa that the snow and dreary weather can be downright depressing. Guess you can’t relate until you actually live in it. Experience is everything huh?
Can’t wait for DS to come home this Friday for spring break.
He seems to adjusting to college life OK. Although, I think he underestimated how much he needed to study for an A in college. As a result, he received his first B. This semester, he seems to study a bit more. He is uncharacteristically not being involved as much in college now. I wish he would join more clubs, join orchestra, or play one of his sports. The only compliant he makes is about how the weed-out classes are being unreasonably difficult.
Hug your S extra hard 4beardolls. I’m missing my two with a vengeance. One comes home March 14 and the other will be home March 18th - same school, but one has to work at the University M and T. They will be home to see D3 in her school’s spring musical. So grateful for that perfect timing since the hs musical is something they all share as a passion.
Re: weather conversation. And this is why I want to retire in SoCa. NY has had a dreary winter. Still, it’s not Boston. My S2, the freshman at Tufts, texted husband & me last Saturday night while we were at dinner in NYC. Sent 3 pics of all the snow in front of his dorm and said it had snowed some for the last 15 days but for one, & he had never experienced anything like it & hoped it would stop. No doubt it’s affecting his mood. He sounded less than happy about it.
D contacted me to ask my opinion about her schedule for next fall. My opinion was to get an advisor who knows her major. The one she talked to about becoming her advisor is on a maternity leave, which has been extended. I told her to find someone at her school in one of her majors. Even at my own school, I work with freshmen. I try to pass students on by the end of the year. Housing sign up is less than a month away, and d says she has all her ducks in row. She seems to be liking school as well as she did last semester. She’s applying for a summer research position that would keep her on campus.
Meanwhile, my oldest child has her first interview for a real, full-time job tomorrow. Where did the time go?
Today is my DS’s birthday. I texted him this morning and we have a Skype session scheduled late tonight, after his intramural basketball game. Things still seem to be going well for him, knock on wood. Great friends with his roommate, doing well in class, involved in his fraternity.
Less busy this semester because his sport is not in season, so practice is only once a week and not every day. And of course no games. So despite having one more class than in the fall, not crunched for time.
DH sees him this weekend for a fraternity event and I am sure they will have a great time together.
I am over this winter and I don’t even live in Boston! I can’t wait for spring break to get some sun. Too bad DS’s break doesn’t coincide but a few days in Madrid with his dad will be some compensation for missing a family beach trip I suppose.
@3tallblonds, I feel you. Bright lights can really lure people away from Science in a hurry! My DS will not be coming home for Spring Break. Instead he will be touring around the Country with his a cappella group. Not much time for science these days. I do miss him terribly though and will be making a trip to Nashville to watch them perform in a couple of weeks. If the mountain won’t come to Muhammad…
Snow is really exciting the first time it falls if you’re from the South or Southern California, where a lot of kids have never really experienced it before unless they’re families are skiers. My polar bear son, who chose to go to school in the South over schools in Minnesota and a few other cold climes after last year’s brutal winter, had the time of his life yesterday when they canceled classes due to snow hitting the State of Alabama. Tuscaloosa ended up only getting a dusting, but he had a wonderful time wearing his LL Bean boots and windbreaker playing in the snow all over campus. They even made it on the local news.
Meanwhile his friends at school in Boston must think he’s certifiably lost his mind.
My D also enjoyed the first snowfall. I got pictures of the snowball fight outside her dorm. Now, after a few weeks of cold, ice and snow (they haven’t cancelled any classes), I think she’s over it and glad I talked her out of going any further North for school. I don’t think midterms are helping any either. She’s looking forward to Spring Break in 2 weeks. I hope the weather here (currently cold and rainy) improves by then. I’m ready for some sunshine too!
DD has been enjoying the snow as she loves it. But after growing up in Massachusetts and after the past couple of years I’m sure she’s mostly happy that she can just enjoy it - and not have to shovel it or drive to school in it!! Although we have missed having an extra set of hands to help with snow removal during all this snow!
Second term for her has had it’s ups and downs. There was a day or two when she thought her best friend was going to have to leave for health reasons. Luckily things turned out better and she’s staying! Last night she called absolutely giddy that she’s going to be an RA next year in a sophomore dorm she really wanted to be in! I haven’t heard her that happy (and relieved) in a long time! After dealing with her roommate all year she’ll have a single next year and her friends will hopefully be able to live in her dorm or close by. Can’t wait to talk with her more about it today! And hear more about her classes and if she’s made any progress finding something to do this summer.
