Parents of the HS Class of 2014

My son has kept himself busy (he, too, is on break) with applying for jobs for the summer and researching what classes to take in the fall. He’s very pleased with his courses, as he registers in a couple of weeks. He also asked if I would look into helping him find out from the local community colleges if they offer two classes online this summer, as he wants to finish out his gen ed requirements. Got that idea from his older brother, who did the same thing between his freshman and sophomore years. I shall see him next week, as I am heading south to set up his summer storage deal. I plan to help him pack up at least one half of his stuff, so he is not so rushed at the end to do everything.

3tallblonds: I have the same type of relationship with the younger son. He can get very defensive when I try to help with a decision (even though he asks for the help). Often his older brother will chat with him and offer advice. Then, he comes to me or his dad with what he is thinking. Recently he decided he will just double major and earn a minor in math,as well as start his studies for an MBA all in four years. That’s a lot to do, but he’s happy with that decision, so I am not rocking the boat.

DS has a summer job lined up as well (bussing as what passes for an upscale restaurant). But, he’d like to get a local internship as well. Thing is, he has to apply to Finland for the job that’s practically next door. Really.

Does anyone have any intel on how the whole dorm move-out process goes? I felt so prepared for move in with all the schedules and lists available, but D will be done with this semester the last week of April and I am wondering if the move-out just a free-for-all? It was so crazy trying to get everything in there in the first place, I’m not looking forward to moving all that plus what she’s managed to accumulate this school year!

I have not been on here for ages! DS14 and DS12 were home for Spring Break a week ago and both just messed up their poor sleep deprived bodies even more! DS12 who is a Physics major got an internship offer with the Air Force Research Lab in NM. He is very excited! After working for a Prof at school last summer for just free rent, he is glad to be paid this summer. DS12 has applied to a couple of regular jobs but I told him he can always lifeguard! Shortage in our part of the world here. DS12 is trying to figure out what he might want to major in. He is one of those kids that nothing has really grabbed him. He is getting all his requirements out of the way and trying a few new things.

@movemetoo‌ moving out is much easier! Not everyone is doing it at the same time. I made sure our kid had all his stuff packed and ready to go - just load them up!

The city where my daughter’s school is has storage services that pick up stuff that’s too much of a hassle to move home and back. (I am thinking of that refrigerator…)

DS will store his stuff locally. DH is flying out the day of his last final and will pack him up while he is taking exams. Then the next day they will move it to storage and then fly home that evening.

It’s the start of my DD18’s spring break now and we are off for a week in Mexico. I am so tired of this cold weather and really looking forward to a week in the sun with nothing to do but lie on a pool chaise and order drinks. We’ve been several times to this part of Mexico so we probably won’t be doing too much exploring which is fine with me! After two years in a row of on-the-go spring breaks I am ready to just laze about!

D will likely bring clothes and bedding home in her car and store the rest of her stuff locally. I’m debating whether to drive up there to help her pack and move her stuff into storage. It may depend on how much time she has between her last final and when she has to be out of the dorm.

D spent much of Spring Break recovering from an awful cold and bronchitis. I was getting nervous about her finding a summer job. She reminded me that while she can be “a mess” about some things, she has a great track record for finding employment. Sure enough, she went out one afternoon and came back with two jobs - one waitressing and one hostessing. Both are popular restaurants so I’m hoping she’ll make good money. I figure this will be the last summer she can work a “regular” job and will need to find some sort of internship next summer. That will be interesting because she honestly has no idea what she wants to do.

@2014novamom‌ - Sounds like a lovely Spring Break. Enjoy your trip!

My d thinks she can handle move out on her own. We’re going to see her next weekend for Easter and bringing an extra suitcase. She already rented a storage unit. She thinks she can move her own stuff - bedding, desk thingie, winter clothes, microwave, etc into storage and just pack the clothes and a few other things she wants for the summer and fly home.

She had a little mini meltdown yesterday. She’s on spring break and is ready to just be done with school. She went with her friends to the beach and she’s not really one for constant togetherness. She’s ready to have her own room, her own stuff and not having people around 24/7. Next year she’s in a suite with one of her friends (a dramatic tale of housing mishaps that ended up working out better than the original plans) and she’ll have her own room. I think that will be key for her.

@2014novamom‌ rather envious of your escape from our never-ending winter blues…high only in mid-20s here today! Ouch!!
Am excitedly awaiting DS home on Monday for his spring break after he spends the first few days visiting girlfriends family in Texas. Will try to discuss summer plans while home (?job, Gen ed classes at local college?, other?) as well as discussions about how to tie up end of the year loose ends. DS was offered an RA position for next year but turned it down when assignment was to the renowned freshman"party" dorm. In the end he has settled into a small single in the honors sophomore dorm and seems happy about it.
Good luck to all as our 2014s round the corner and head for home!

S14’s city also has storage services that pick up what you want to leave behind. We had him take extra suitcases back to school at the end of spring break (inside each other so only one bag on the flight) and he’ll bring what doesn’t get stored home in them. The storage company will also bring him some empty boxes and whatever he doesn’t use, he gives back. He’s spending the fall abroad so they’ll keep his stuff until January.

Most college town has this service as @my2sonsfromca‌ mentioned. My daughter will be using this type of storage service as well. She has an extra day after her last finals before flying home, so she will have time to pack.

I’m glad for the storage discussion because I just called and got the last available climate controlled unit at the facility near the school!

D is home today for her HS track coach’s wedding. She brought one bag to leave. It snowed a little last night, so it’s not like it’s a good idea to box up all the winter garb yet. If dad will give her some gas money, she’ll come home again next weekend for Easter, maybe with a little more stuff. Oldest d has a senior recital and graduation before d’14 wraps up may term. Slowly, all the stuff will find it’s way back.

My thoughts and best wishes are for you mdcmom! We are enjoying a couple of years off! (we have a HS freshman.)

DS’14 made a trip to NYC from Boston this week. I’m a little nervous, but he seems to be having fun.

We looked into the storage places through school and they seemed pretty expensive. And since DH is willing to fly out there and help pack up, etc. it will work out. Truth be told, I think DH is just looking for an excuse to spend time with DS.

I really shouldn’t be complaining about our weather. I know it snowed in Cleveland this week! Plus I was in Hawaii in January. DH is the one who really needs to decompress. His travel schedule this month has been insane. He traveled through 6 countries in the last two weeks alone, on 2 different continents.

Back to laundry and packing!

Deja vu all over again…DS will join his sister at Cornell which simplifies things SO much. Very happy family here  .

Congrats @ mdcmom! I am sure you know to book your hotel for move-in day.

My D just got approved for her summer stipend at Temple U that comes with her merit scholarship. She’s going to use it to pay for a week at a cappella camp + plane fare & I believe can use the remainder to “pay” herself while she does an unpaid internship with a music education camp for a few weeks. This is really an amazing benefit!

Wishing everyone happy holidays this weekend! We’ll see DD on Easter Sunday briefly. Picking her up to go to church and out to brunch in Providence. It will be fun to be back in the church we were married in and where she was baptized - haven’t been back since! Also hoping for some warm weather to stay but that doesn’t look likely around here for a while. But my crocuses are coming up - despite the snow in the rest of the yard!

Congrats mdcmom! That’ll simplify the logistics too.
