DS had his wisdom teeth pulled today - he took a couple of days off work to recover. I hope it is enough.
@glido
Only two days?
My daughter is scheduled the first week of August, before we drop her to her school.
Both of my boys bounced back fairly quickly.
Beyond the conventional wisdom to have bags of frozen veggies on hand as ice packs, I would also suggest asking the surgeon if it makes sense to irrigate with water using one of those little squirt things from the drug store. (Kind of like a wide plastic syringe.) Regular salt water rinse left food trapped in crevices and delayed healing.
@glido and @2018dad , just had my daughter’s consult this week. The doctor said that he doesn’t recommend it, but has had patients feel well enough to go to the movies that first night. He said usually they just want to sleep the first day, but are usually able to continue activities after that as long as nothing too strenuous. Just want to watch out for day 3 as that is when dry socket would occur if it is going to. Unfortunately, scheduling didn’t work out to get in before she goes back to school and she doesn’t get a fall break. My daughter is scheduled for Dec. 21
My boys recovered pretty quickly from wisdom teeth removal, too. I remember taking the older son out for dinner two days after surgery. The younger son went back to running within three or four days after his surgery.
Speaking of the younger son, he is all but climbing the walls to return to school, his girlfriend and friends. Although he has been busy with two, online classes and working, it’s not the same. So, my husband and I have been getting his car worked on so it’s ready for the journey. He needs to take it for an oil change. I went shopping the other day to get some supplies for his move-in. He still need to get a mini-fridge for his room in his fraternity house – while they have a lovely kitchen with a big fridge, he still wants a small one so he can keep some things nearby when studying. I have been trading e-mails with his girlfriend’s mom, who adores him. She said that he can come and stay at their home, which is about 30 or so minutes from the campus, until he can move into his room.
The big development is that he does not want to continue to compete athletically in college. He wants to run to stay in shape, but his focus is on his studies, getting involved in other things on campus and working part-time. He apparently wants to build a solid resume with some internships so he can land a good job when he graduates. Well, while we will miss watching him run, we also cannot argue with his thinking.
I think everybody’s wisdom teeth experiences are very different depending on how difficult they are to pull (impacted, etc.) and their pain tolerance. My daughter had a really tough time but two were impacted. No dry socket for her, but she was in rough shape for a week.
My son’s fall plans are finally falling into place. He has decided to transfer to a directional state school and was immediately invited into their honors program because of his academic success at Michigan. He’ll be living in a house with some of his Boy Scout friends who are at the same school. They had a roommate back out in late April. This school has some majors that really interest him. I’m hoping the fresh start helps him regain some confidence and find his way. He seems relieved to not be going back there. At least he knows he won’t be sitting home alone on Saturday nights while everybody else goes out partying like he was last year. Let’s hope this path works better for him.
@2016BarnardMom Thanks for updating us. I remember how tough his admissions journey was. It sounds like he is truly landing on his feet. It is great he was able to find academic success even though he wasn’t happy at Michigan. I’m sure that smooths the transfer, not to mention having a social group already. I wish him the best!
My S16 never did find steady work for the summer, but is doing occasional work for two different scientists. One is paying him hourly to work on his university website, for the other he is doing data entry on a volunteer basis. These jobs are tangentially related to his major and at least he is learning how to communicate. I wish he were putting in more hours but I’m glad he’s managing these vague arrangements without my help. Meanwhile he and his girlfriend split the cost for her to fly here for a long weekend, and he’s attending the local large anime convention. I am sad we have only 3 or 4 weeks before he heads back to school (that’s the next journey to plan).
She’s got about 4 weeks left, but d is ready to be done with work and done with “home.”
Spygirl heads back to college late next week :(. She will be an R.A. in a freshman dorm and is required to arrive early for training and program development. She came home a week late due to R.A. training so it seems as if her time with us has been very short.
Same with my daughter…she headed back yesterday and will have RA training next week. Her winter break is shorter too because of it. But she is saving me so much money that I shouldn’t complain.
DS heads back exactly two weeks from today for preseason training. I won’t see him again until late September when I travel to a nearby away game, but DS will fly to Chicago to see their season opener there. It’s really just an excuse for DS to visit Chicago again and hang out with some buddies!
A week from today we’ll be visiting with DS for the first time since he left in early January! I’m glad he’s doing well, enjoying his job and his summer class. But I miss him so, and I’m very excited about our upcoming trip, even if it will be 90 degrees every day there!
My son elected to jump in his car almost a week ago and head for school. He had a place to stay, his girlfriend’s parents’ home. He lined up some part-time jobs for pocket money. He even cleaned out the storage unit and brought the things to his girlfriend’s home until he can move onto campus in about 10 days. Yes, he forgot some things from home, so I’ll be shipping them down. Would have done it already, but life has been a little crazy here. My husband had to have emergency surgery while on a business trip in Texas. Fortunately, everything is fine, and he is slowly regaining his strength. We hope to drive down and see our son sometime this fall, since he has no plans to return home until Christmas break.
@momreads – I hope your husband’s recovery continues to go smoothly! Must have been very stressful and scary to have a medical emergency happen while he was on the road.
@momreads - That must have been scary to get that call! Hope he recovers quick and smoothly!
D will be leaving soon and I can’t believe it is that time already, it was so nice to have her home. She ordered a few text books on ebay, a few on Amazon. Will be ordering the rest when the textbooks are posted online. This is the first time we looked up on ebay and glad to find used books that are about the same cost as renting from amazon (hoping that the books are in good shape).
D and I looked up the costs for the fall 2015 semester, she is deciding between going 14 meals/wk vs 10 meals/wk. She skipped the dining halls a lot towards the end of spring semester. She started out the freshman year raving about the dorm food which only lasted about two weeks
What else are you shopping for your kids to get ready for their sophomore year?
One of mine leaves on Wednesday. She has to be at school by next Sunday and I’d purchased a ticket for Saturday, but her boyfriend (and his parents) begged her to fly to NJ and drive down with him so she’s doing that.
I have not purchased one additional thing for either of my kids to go to school this year. they are each taking much less than last year. Last year, because of a screw up in suite assignments, one was the last in her suite and she brought very little as the others had already purchased chairs and TVs and kitchen stuff and bathroom racks (which, by the way, I thought were unnecessary). I have no idea what she and her new roommates have planned but I know both kids learned they need a lot less to survive.
My D is also in the “less is more” camp this year. Did @ell freeze over? Lol. Her dorm room this year is small. And she had SO much stuff last year. Not sure what I’m going to do with the discarded items. Ironically, she needs a few new things because of the room. No a/c in this dorm so we’re buying some fans. Also, overhead lighting is poor so she needs another lamp. Each dorm seems to require different items.
D is ready to go back. She’s going to Seattle for a week to visit a friend from HS who attends U of Wash. She’ll have 3 days to pack for school when she returns and then we’re off. The summer has gone by so quickly.
Looking forward to updates from everyone. Here’s to a successful sophomore year!
D does not want to get anything except the books and a few school supplies. She had a good summer very relaxing so I assumed she was happy to be home and not looking forward to going back. Then she says she can’t wait to get back to school, I guess it is a good sign if she wants to go back.
We will buy DS a small fridge for his room. He shared with his roommate last year but they are living in different suites this year (same fraternity house though) so we will get him a small one. Other than books and restocking on toiletries and laundry supplies I think that’s it. Oh, and clothes.
