I’m glad that he will be home, glido. He needs time to heal up and get some good rest before he interns at a local bank.
To all of you what have kids coming home for the summer…I’m jealous. D decided to take an internship in another state. I get her for a total of 3 weeks this summer, 1 at the beginning, 2 at the end. My oldest was home last summer between graduation and the start of her big-girl job; she’s obviously gone for good now, too. Anyway, first summer, just me and h. Projects, I need projects.
Regular semester wraps up this week already and we’ve hit the half-way point! Track is still in season, so she took a May term course (might as well, as long as she’s on campus for track).
My kid isn’t coming home for the summer either. She has an internship in her college city so she’ll be home for part of May to have her wisdom teeth out and go to her sister’s high school graduation, and that’s it. She wasn’t home after freshman year either. We didn’t anticipate that she’d leave for college and not even be home summers, but we did raise her to be an adult, so we’re glad she’s doing so well at it so far.
Well, I need to vent a little. D is considering not doing a study abroad because it might interfere with track! Please, she’s not on scholarship (DIII) and she’s nowhere near where she’d need to be to qualify for nationals. I’m shutting up, but seriously? Oh, can’t do that. Might miss some track meets.
@ordinarylives, DS can’t do a traditional study abroad due to summer internships and full semester schedule. so he decided to do a Maymester study abroad instead.
@ordinarylives I feel your pain. We get dd less than 3 weeks. 5 days at the start 2 weeks at the end.
As far as study abroad goes, is it possible she’s using track as an excuse and has another reason not to go?
@ordinarylives - Has DD looked into running track overseas for a semester? I have a friend who played lacrosse in Europe during his semester abroad. It was a club sport, not varsity, but he loved it. She could even look for some fun road races and do that. Just a thought.
DD is doing well this year and was elected to the position of Ritual Chairperson at her sorority. This added some stress earlier this semester but she got through it and the spring initiation and reception was a success. For this summer she has a lucrative babysitting/nanny job two days per week and will be working with an Occupational Therapist in an unpaid shadowing program this year at the Cleveland Clinic. This may develop into a full time summer position next year. We are packing her up and bringing her home next Thursday. We can’t believe her undergraduate experience is half over.
DS is nearly done with his 1L year. He said that his class of students ranged from 20 to 34 and about 60% had some work experience. He finds the work hard but enjoys it. Some law schools want their 1L’s to have work experience. He was waitlisted at Northwestern (and never was admitted) as they told him that they preferred work experience with their new admits. He found that he needed about 4 months to study for the LSAT. He was originally going to take it in June but determined that he wasn’t ready based on early practice tests. He then researched test prep services and got guidance from his pre-law advisor. He took the LSAT in October and did very well but wanted to push the score so he retook it in December after more practice and prep. His score actually dropped a point so that was the end of that. He was waitlisted at his school of choice but arranged an interview with the Dean of Admissions, rented a car and drove to Durham NC from Washington, DC for the interview. I remember it was at 1:00 PM on a Friday afternoon. He said he spent 40 minutes in the interview and felt it went well. He called later that evening after returning to DC to report he received an email from the Dean around 635 PM that evening welcoming him to the law class of 2018. He had gained a lot of interviewing experience in the fall of his senior year and we all feel this served him well when interviewing with some of the law schools where he was accepted. He did decide to live by himself this past year and he feels it was a positive move that helped keep him focused throughout the year. He is doing a joint JD/LLM with a specialization in Business and Entrepreneurialship. His group of 10 students will spend a month in Silicon Valley with the rest of the summer back in Durham where they will work with the Duke Angel Fund group. He says his business and economics background is very helpful and expects it to be more so as he gets into more advanced and specialized law classes.
Don’t forget that two years ago today we were getting off the SS Indecision!!
Glad to hear both your kids are doing well, @AvonHSDad. Can you believe it was only 2 years ago that our dks made their college choices? Seems like a lifetime ago.
And, he’s half done…
Because of Pitt’s schedule, I get to be one of the first on this thread to give the annual spring move out report. We picked up our son on Friday evening and moved him out in about 90 minutes even though he had not packed. A. Single. Thing.
In fairness, we picked him up shortly after his last final, but seriously, not the winter stuff? Not the towels? I am sending an empty shoebox next year just to have the feel good moment of seeing one box packed when we arrive for move out.
His club sport had its regional tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Columbus which is kinda / sorta on the way home. We spent an extra night there for the tournament. We got to watch him compete some with his team so that was worth it. They did great, placing well above their seeding. It rained though, so we got to stand around sodden fields for a couple of days. The team was absolutely covered in mud.
On the school side, it looks like he had another good semester. While turning in one of his finals, a take home exam, the professor asked him to be an undergraduate TA for the same course sequence next semester so that was a nice surprise. He’s one of S favorite professors, so that should work out well.
S told me he’s completed 95 hours, but won’t graduate early because of course sequencing and research. I don’t think he is in a big hurry to graduate ahead of a four year plan and I am okay with that.
Thanks @AvonHSDad for the law school info. I can’t believe that this class year is nearly done (or done) with half of college. My son leaves for a semester abroad at the university of Edinburgh in August, so he only has a year and a half left on his campus.
DS has strep. He was able to get into the student health center this afternoon. They got him tested and gave him antibiotics. I am glad he got into see a medical professional so quickly, but so untimely with papers and exams all due in the next nine days. He thinks he will be okay in just a few days.
So hard to believe these kids are just at the half-way mark!
I’m laughing @Dave_N because I’ve been there. Can’t believe he’s done already - wow.
Yikes @glido. Nothing worse then being sick at finals, poor kid!
DS is sitting for his last final as I type. DH flies out tomorrow morning and they will move his stuff into the same storage facility he used last year and then fly home in the evening. On Thursday he has a consult for his wisdom teeth and Monday he starts his internship (pending the results of the wisdom teeth consult). I’ll be glad to have him home!
@glido - Hope your son is feeling better!
I can’t believe they’re almost halfway done! DD has a final late this week and then we’ll talk about her schedule for coming home. She’s officially done next Thursday but wants to stay for the weekend and may go back for Senior week if she’s working on a show that will be going on then. Hopefully by Thursday she’ll have a better idea of her move out plans. In any case, she’s close enough that I can drive down, pick up some things and deliver her some boxes so she can pack up stuff before the final load out.
The bigger stress right now is she still hasn’t been confirmed for her study abroad in Edinburgh next fall! After major issues with the office at her school, it looks like everything has finally been submitted and approval should come soon, but it will be a big relief when everything is finalized. She’ll be home for 3-4 weeks before leaving to teach at a camp this summer and then will be home for another 3 weeks or so. Can’t wait for her to be home!
DS wrapping up today as well down at Tulane…finals x 2 on Sunday, then one yesterday and a “computer demonstration project” completed today. He is then driving home to spend summer at home…enrolled to take summer O-Chem so he’ll be plenty busy…after a 10 day holiday from responsibilities. Can’t wait to have him back!
@Dave_N - I too chuckled at your post. Sounds like my D.
@glido - Sorry to hear that your S is sick. That’s really tough during finals!
D has her last final tomorrow. Her big sister in her sorority is graduating on Sunday so D is staying with her through graduation and will head home on Monday. She has a few weeks off school (will be working at my office), then she heads back for summer session at the beginning of June. I have a feeling the summer will fly by.
D’s car broke down the last day before she returned to school from Spring Break. I gave her my car to get back to school and I’ve been driving H’s ancient second car. I’ve been vacillating between getting D’s car fixed (it’s an expensive repair and an old car), getting her a “new” car, or getting myself a new car and giving her mine. I suppose I should figure this out before she goes back for summer session. I really don’t want to spend the money on any of those options, especially with summer school tuition to pay.
It’s so nice to see everyone’s update. It’s hard to believe we are half way done. DS has changed his major once so far. He is coming home this week after finishing his last final. We are all relieved that he received his formal offer from his summer internship so he will stay home this summer and will get paid, albeit low wage.
My D doesn’t finish for another 2.5 weeks–finals end on the 20th. She’ll have a week off, then will be doing research with a professor during the summer session. I was thrilled when she told me that she’s getting a stipend to (more than!) cover living expenses, plus, even better, she told me on Saturday that the professor (who is her academic advisor) plans to list her as a co-author when he publishes.
She applied to be an orientation advisor so it looks like she’ll be there through the summer.
