dyiu, I don’t but my kids’ dad is very familiar with it and says it is a great school. Interestingly, one of my daughter’s choices is a women’s college (St. Benedict, connected with St. John’s). She was opposed to the idea at first but is now warming up to it, although she might prefer St. Thomas because of its urban location.

@ILMom13579, I know how your daughter feels. I’ve taken the ACT math section practice tests and my head hits the table at problem 50, on a bad day, problem 45. I always guessed the last 5-7 questions.

@sally305, congrats on the bump! Automatic money is always good. I guess that means automatic admissions too. Good luck with the visits.

D made an appointment with the essay advisor (finally!) for next week. I think she realized the longer she waited, the longer she may have to wait for an appointment (because I told her). She’s going to take in her CA essay and maybe a couple of supplemental essays for review and feedback.

Who knows anything about the areas around New College of Florida and Eckerd? When we visited earlier this year, D liked both schools but now she says she doesn’t like Florida. It appears a kid on her bus lived in Tampa and filled her head with visions of crime and I don’t know what. She still likes the schools but is doubtful of the metro area.

My DS and DD went to Eckerd. We now live part of the year in St. Pete Beach, about 4 minutes from Eckerd. The area around Eckerd is safe and it is about 10 minutes to downtown. Downtown has a very vibrant cultural, entertainment and eclectic shopping area, very artsy. The campus is on a penninsula and has a main gate that is staffed by security. On the weekends, they hire off duty St. Pete police to check in visitors. They copy drivers license from everyone in the vehicles and check student ID’s. My childrren never felt unsafe on or off campus. St. Petersburg is a sprawling small city and like any city has areas that have increased crime. Feel free to PM me for any info. Best of luck in the search.

@ilmom13579, 3 points is awesome! Great stuff! The UWSP kid is done with the ACT now. BG kid is taking it againin October (skipped Sept). He is at a 25. A 26 gets us $4,000 off the price. I pray for just one point.

Hi guys, being you’re all parents of 3.0-3.3 GPA students, I could use my own assistance.
I am a 3.12 GPA senior looking for college options (comp sci)…I already have a large list, but I don’t know where I’ll be accepted, and I’m also on the hunt for more options as well.
I’m from pittsburgh.
Please message me if you think you can help.
Thanks all.

We are able to help if we had more information: geographic area prefered; the amount you can pay for college; this propably the most important information; test scores.
We have a lot of parents from the Midwest and Northeast I believe active on this forum

@sally305 - Thanks! We’re definitely going to look at both St. Kate’s and Augsburg. Trying to swing a trip there (maybe late spring 2015 or once/if there are any acceptances for DD16).

Happy October!

Happy to see kids getting acceptances and increases in test scores…

I don’t really have anything else to add on this end-my girl is trying to keep her head above water until fall sports end and she gets some breathing room. I am trying and mostly succeeding in letting her vent and not saying I TOLD YOU SO too much about not doing all this college work in the summer…

D met with the essay advisor (Essay Lady) yesterday. She said it helped and she’s glad she went. The woman gave advice on transitioning from one section to another. Thank goodness! D has been mulling over this one thing on the CA essay since July. I guess this is writer’s block? Hopefully she’ll work on it sometime this week and meet with Essay Lady next week. I’m not sure she’ll be able to meet the Mom-imposed October 15th deadline to submit the EA applications. I am sure she can meet the real November 1 deadline. I think.

@slackermommd remember baby steps it’s sounds like she may be ready to run…

D is now stressing about first semester grades they determine where she will go because of merit money…if it isn’t one thing it’s another !!!

Oh by the way we are now 4 for 4. CA done waiting for GC to push the button and we are DONE!!!

@Hoosier96, you’re right. D knows that the my main fear is that we hit a major snafu if she waits until 9pm October 31st to submit the EA applications (besides, she has to take her little brother trick-or-treating). I think we may be submitting on October 30th. :)

Yay for the Essay Lady! @Hoosier96 our girls sound like they were separated at birth-my kid is so worked up about the class rank and the first semester grades are the last grading period included-she’s worked up about most things these days though…

@pepper03 how is your D soccer going? I think stress will be with both of them their whole life. I just hope all this drama stops by the time their brains are suppose to be fully developed by 24 …only 6 more years 8-}

@Hoosier96…great that all is taken care of…4 for 4! It is a sigh of relief for us to just be done with the app process, that’s for sure.

@Hoosier96 her team is playing way above expectations it’s actually unbelievable since they lost their core team the last two years to graduation. She is playing the best she has ever played it’s been great to watch! If she can avoid injuries she will end her soccer career at the top of her game. That’s pretty cool huh?

The time committment she won’t miss though. She’s pretty much in survival mode right now. I hope she comes through this stronger and better able to manage the inevitable stress we all face in a healthier way. I see signs that she is going to do that but it’s hard to watch her trying to keep her head above water. One lesson I hope she learns is to not try to do so much she ends up enjoying nothing she does. Right now that’s where she is and I am not a fan of that behavior. They need to figure it out though. I try my best to stay calm and supportive while waiting for the inevitable meltdowns from her…and me!

Well, DS got waitlisted at IU-bloomington. Honestly, I wish they had just denied him flat out, so we could get on with it. There is no way they are going to admit him and I think this is just a “nod” to our legacy status. They want to see his 7th semester grades and they were concerned with his SAT scores and suggest he take the SAT or ACT again and send those. There really isn’t a chance he’s getting in. We had an honest talk about it…the group of kids they will probably admit in that lower quartile (OOS, those with special talents or circumstance, etc.) and he understands. But, we both agree that he needs to see this throught, so he’s going to take the ACT in December. I doubt very much he’s going to put much time into studying…more than likely he’ll just familiarize himself with the test more than he has in the past (he’s just done SAT), but he’s going to do this anyway. I guess it’s nicer to be able to say to his friends that he’s waitlisted rather than flat out denied. At the end of our conversation, he did say “I’m going to get there one way or another”. Good for him if that’s his goal!

@conmama, Isn’t legacy admittance a “special circumstance”?
In any case, he still has a chance! I like his attitude.

@slackermom…Thanks…I like his attitude, also. He’s always been such a cheerful,positive, happy person. I hope that doesn’t change as he gets older and life gets tougher. I think the legacies would have helped if he had been in that 50% block of kids. They also denied our oldest DS 3 years ago. Plus, someone mentioned on here awhile ago that legacies may mean more for private universities. These mega flagships just have so many!

@conmama IU doesn’t realize that this leads to poorer alum giving :-? .
Hang in there he will bloom where he is planted. If IU is his dream then he will work to make it happen.
Don’t forget to look up my suggestion for the tutor. This one administer a time ACT every Saturday. It would give your S a chance to practice if he is sitting the Oct or Dec date.

@conmama his attitude is going to take him far in life-I was told many years ago that “attitude is EVERYTHING!”

Happy Monday folks!
