I have been reading A Mind for Numbers, and I think I’m going to give it to my daughter before she goes to college - it has a lot of practical techniques for eliminating procrastination and methods for studying. Might be worthwhile for those of us with kids who procrastinate (or those of us who have a problem in this area!)

Four applications out the door! Last night D submitted the apps without any supplemental essays. Five more to go. I’m hoping that two more apps will be submitted by Thanksgiving and the last three (or four) are submitted well before the New Year.

She sounds like she is up and running!!! Yeah…we have finally submitted D CA.
We now start on the Candian applications

Great to hear about all the college applications progress everyone made!

S completed his CA and submitted 1 EA and 1 RA this weekend. His next step is to write THREE more essays for the next set of schools before Dec 1 deadline! It was painful enough to nag him about the CA and the essay. My H said that I was beating my head against a brick wall. It will be interesting to see what it will be like for the next several weeks. At least, the pressure is less now with CA completed and one acceptance under his belt.

Three more essays would be three more than DS could handle. I honestly don’t think he would/could do it. He has always hated his English and Lit classes, and I bet it’s been 3 years since he read a book that he wasn’t forced to. He’s sort of completed one essay for one of his schools- I think it needs some revising but he’s ok with it so I guess I have to be too. I guess I should be glad that most of the schools he’s interested in are large schools that don’t require essays. I’m continually impressed by all the kids on here who have multiple essays written.

My oldest DS wouldn’t apply to one of the large state flagships because they required an essay! So, I know how you feel. I can’t imagine having a child who takes the responsibility to start and do multiple essays…you guys are so lucky!

congrats sunnydayfarm! December 1 sounds like a great second deadline. It gives him a nice space to concentrate on school and not stress out on college applications.

While D is fine with writing essays (“they’re only 250 words, mom”), I would have been a mess writing multiple essays in such a short period of time. So I’m impressed with kids who apply to colleges with two, third, five (are they nuts?!) supplemental essays.

Thanks! Slackermom.

My son said he would write essays and do the applications but I had to nudge him to start. He did not always want to give up his personal time to do them either. He kicked such a fuss when doing his CA and essay that nearly drove me nuts. The next three essays are for our state flagships… Oh boy I need to take a deep breath!

Good luck to those who are taking the ACT today…may this be the last standardize test until AP exams [-O<

My DS was accepted to IUPUI, but as I’ve state before wants to go to IUB. He was waitlisted and they want to see him 7th semester grades, which we will be turning in as soon as the semester is over. At first I thought we should go ahead an accept IUPUI offer (we did BSU), but since IUPUI is basically the IU system…will that hurt his chances of IUB taking him seriously that he wants to attend there. Perhaps we should just wait for the formal denial, then accept. I guess we really have until May 1, right? He won’t lose his seat at IUPUI?

I would call IUPUI and ask about cross transferring. Most transfer from IUB to IUPUI not the other way around.
Did your S take the ACT? Or is he waiting until Dec test?
I do hope it works out for your family.

@Conmama. There are no deterrents to accepting the IUPUI offer. IU will not pass judgement on the fact that you have accepted the IUPUI offer. Additionally, for the early classes they readily transfer.

But to your point if he does end up at IUPUI and stays home, you don’t have to worry about the housing issue (November ). You do have until May if you want to,wait.

Most of all, good luck with IU acceptance!

Thanks @Hoosier96 and @Goodkidsdad. That makes me feel better. I just hate to wait too long. I’m a planner and like things done and paid for! He took the ACT last weekend…they want another score by December 31st. He decided since his two SAT’s were comparable, they most likely wouldn’t change with a 3rd test (especially since he hasn’t been studying) and thought he’d just go ahead and try the ACT. We really don’t think there is a chance in hell that he’s getting in, so why not just take a shot at the ACT? He might have guessed really well…haha. Last weekend was the last one he could take where he’d have his scores by the end of the year.

He said he thought it was just as hard…maybe harder because each section is so much longer. While we were having lunch, he just said “I’m done with those tests”. Really…this was just a formality…a 5 hour torture formality that he had to go through. But he did it, the trooper he is.

Fingers are crossed. You might be pleasantly surprised. The format is longer, but different for the ACT.

My kid did much better on the SAT while others I know did better on the ACT. All about HOW you took it.

And yes, he is a trooper.

I wanted to report that my D (3.1 GPA) got her first college acceptance yesterday (they called her about an hour before we got home to the mail with the big envelope in it). It’s a small LAC in Maryland. She got a fair amount of merit aid, but it’s still very pricey. Hoping for more acceptances as well as need-based aid notification early next year. But it’s so gratifying to see all the application work come to fruition!

YEAH for @Barbalot D… The first one is a great feeling, now you know that your D will be going to college!!!

My one son took the ACT on 10/25 and actually said it went well, despite his minimal prep. We deferred it from Setp to October because we thought it would be better to be in school a couple of months before taking it. He said the science was easier this time, and he said he learned some things in Statistics that helped him. Did not know there were Stats on the ACT test. He had a 25.25 last time - and needs a 25.5 (26) to get the additional merit aid and BGSU. Fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed kmanshouse; has he been getting tons of emails concerning honors; PLA and something due at the beginning of December?

D is overwhelmed trying to do honors; scholarship essays…hates to write.

First quarter grades in 4 A and B+; if she maintains this it looks like USF will be her home next fall.

well done @Barbalot…congratulations.

@Barbalot …congrats, that first one is such a weight off and a confidence booster…especially to her first choice. Way to go!
