Parents of the HS Class of 2015

She should be home by 6:30. I’m keeping myself busy by cleaning the house.

Acceptances? Hooray! I’m feeling good because DC#2 got another app submitted today, a whopping two days early.

Happy Black Friday, we skipped shopping to take my MIL on a personalized tour of DC to celebrate your upcoming 80th. We had crowds, but nothing like the malls.

DS got his first college acceptance and with good merit aid. The acceptance was hidden in his spam folder, so be careful.

Wonderful news, Mom24boys! And congrats, Irishmomof2!

I confess I am getting nervous about an app due Monday. My son’s music teacher still has not upload his letter of recommendation and without the music supplement, there’s really no chance of my son getting admitted. :frowning:

He’s a great advocate for my son, but I know these letters can be hard to write.

It’s funny, though. Some people are just able to get it done quickly. For the recent surprise National Merit Special Scholarship that my son is now in the running for, I had to email his college physics prof and ask him to write a letter and he responded back right away and had that uploaded on Thanksgiving, two days after I asked.

OTOH, we asked his music teacher months ago and he kept saying he’d get to it…but he hasn’t.

Also, my son’s college English teacher actually volunteered to write a LOR for my son, and I thought, great! He’s doing fabulously in the class and it would be better to have two college profs write recommendations. Alas, she is also slow and never checks her email, so it will not get done before his Dec. 1 super reach school.

Of course, my son still has two short and two medium essays to go for this app, too, so, er, it might just be a wash all the way around. LOL!

Oh well! We take what we can get and are grateful for whatever comes our way!

Oh my goodness, @sbjdorlo, I would definitely be calling that music teacher today to ask about the letter! I have seen reports on here that sometimes the person thinks they uploaded it but needed to do some specific thing they didn’t know about…or just to get them moving. Do they not know about the 12/1 deadline?

I keep worrying that D is missing a deadline, but I looked at the schools again, and she has no 12/1 deadlines that I can find. Her next one is 12/15.

I also looked again and I THINK our earliest CSS deadline is 2/14. Just being sure of these deadlines is stressful. It seems the ones specifically for scholarships can be almost well hidden on the websites.

It’s great to see news of acceptances here! My D has some friends who are reporting acceptances too – posting screenshots of the emails on Facebook, etc. Unfortunately, it’s made her anxious about her own status of not having heard anything yet – even though she knows perfectly well that her ED school doesn’t respond till mid December, and her one EA school, not till Jan 1. Thank goodness we do have that EA school which is a safety for her, because otherwise I don’t know how we’d make it till April!

My daughter’s music teacher is also a serious procrastinator for letters of recommendation. She asked other teachers instead, and her voice teacher is really good about getting them done.

BTW, she was indeed accepted to Seton Hill University! With some merit money!

Congratulations @Irishmomof2!

@Someoldguy “As God as my witness, I thought Turkeys could fly”

9th application was sent off today; 5 in the past 24 hours to add to the 2 EA, 1 rolling and another RD. 3 apps were free and one of the free ones is a great school so fingers crossed. $705 spent so far on app fees covering 13 schools.

3 apps left to go. The true deadlines are Jan 1 but I am imposing an artificial deadline of Dec 14 cos I don’t want to try to find missing LOR during winter break. I feel like an ogre too, but it is hard enough to track teachers during school hours much less. Hopefully my D will stop hating me when she is relaxing on winter break instead of hunched over her computer or trying to edit her essays on her phone

DS had 4 apps left to go, 3 due Jan 15 and one Feb 15. He dropped the Feb 15 awhile ago and I think he will drop on of the reach schools due Jan 15. That leaves one reach and one match, both very far from home.

I wouldn’t be surprised if no more applications are done. With an admission and merit aid to a safety he likes (which is only 6 hrs from home) all motivation is fading very quickly. I am think I am fine with this.

Music teacher emailed and said he got the letter done-yay! And we decided on which “take” my son will use for the supplement. So glad he rerecorded. So now it’s four essays today and tomorrow.

Mom24boys, that’s great that your DS has a school that he likes and can afford. We are not at that point at all, unfortunately. He’s been admitted to four safeties, but we won’t know until March if they’re affordable. My son is weary but knows he still needs to finish all the schools on his list because they last ones, the reaches, are the ones that are affordable.

University of California app is done and submitted. Phew.

@Mom24boys‌, D’s in a similar situation. Six apps in with two acceptances. She should hear from the remaining four schools by Christmas. She’s more than thrilled with one school and we’re more than thrilled with the merit aid. She still has three applications to submit but she’s dropping one, thinking about dropping another, and still wants to submit the third. I’m okay if she decides she’s finished with submitting applications. I’m also okay if she wants to submit more applications.

@SlackerMomMD, congrats on the acceptance that thrills you and your D.

D2 is 3 down, 5 to go. The 3 she’s done have their own applications. She needs to finish her CA essay for the remaining schools. One is due Monday, so today I’m encouraging, tomorrow I’ll be cracking the whip.

Acceptance from one rolling school that’s guaranteed for her stats should be in any day now. The other rolling is a toss-up. The EA should be a shoe-in, but they claim they haven’t gotten the transcript that the GC says went out two weeks ago.

Last year D1 took RD schools off her list as rolling acceptances came in. There was no reason to apply to a school that she didn’t like as much as one she had already been accepted to.

We’re also in the "many submitted, 4 to go, and the natives are becoming restless. There’s one more that I want done by the end of the weekend, but I’m told that homework calls.

Still only one ED and the flagship state.

Have developed a list of Plan B schools. None of their applications are due before ED notification, November 15, but some of the deadlines to schedule an interview are before that date.

DS has applied to three, with one admission to U but not yet to honors college, has three more about done and is having trouble with two HMFRs. He’s not sure why he really wants to go to them compared with two of the others and since they’re HMFRs it’s my opinion that he doesn’t have a chance to get in if he doesn’t write some compelling essays so he needs to figure out why he wants to go there more than anywhere else in the world or give it up. I guess the best reason to go there would be if he got good $$, but that’s not going to make a very compelling essay.

All college apps have been in for quite a while and now there is a possibility of adding another one. It would be a safety, a long way from home but family nearby. Before spending the additional $65 app fee plus ACT score fees, I think she should wait and see the decisions from her two EA schools. I’m also pushing for scholarship apps now. Perhaps we can share some scholarship ideas and links.
