@LeftofPisa and @VMT - wrestler also had a hard time telling some of the coaches he was not coming. He really liked some of them. He also liked some of the wrestlers who hosted him too. Those were tough phone calls.
A decision has been made! We are off the U.S.S. Indecision! Which way to the Lido Deck?
With the giddiness of a first-time mom in the delivery room (and the subsequent forgetting of the pain) I am going to optimistically say 2018 Son’s College Search/Acceptance will be easy compared to this!
(Ahahahaha! Couldn’t even type it with a straight face.)
Just follow the cabana boys, @HeliMom74.
@Loganator, I may be gone by then (I have a D19) but I will leave the cabana boys behind for you to manage.
@HeliMom74 - Congratulations! Take a seat on the Lido Deck and relax – the fruity drinks are extra tasty tonight and the little umbrellas are plentiful!
Congrats @sally22 and @helimom74 !
Congratulations @sally22 and @helimom74. First round on me!
Decision finally made here as well, made easier by a FA package that I didn’t think that she would get in a million years simply because I thought we wouldn’t qualify for any FA. I called the school’s FA office last week to ask about submitting 2014 tax returns and was fortunate enough to get the assistant director on the phone. We started talking and he told me to send him a note explaining why our income was so high last year. I did. D15 received a package today that included scholarship money, subsidized loan, and federal work-study money. We are over the moon.
Moral of the story: don’t be afraid to apply for FA, even if you think you don’t qualify. And don’t be afraid to speak to a school’s FA office about aid. Because you never know.

My d is back from an admitted student weekend and is still undecided. She likes different things about the final 3 choices, but I think a top two is emerging, so that’s progress. Congrats to all the recent deciders!
No. Idea. Where.
I need more than a fruity drink and/or a Cabana Boy! :((
Well, I was planning to save this one for April 30th, but it sounds like we need it this morning. Just remember, college choice is a good problem to have.

No Early Applications here. I agree they are great. I also had two kids who could not get everything in order in time for the deadline. I do not know why that is as I tried mightily with this one since I knew everything she needed to do in order to have it all done early. I guess in the end it all works out. I never was concerned she wouldn’t have somewhere to go to college. She learned the hard way that she doesn’t know everything. She had a horrible first semester in part because she didn’t take care of things when it was made very clear to her by numerous people.
@ITBgirl I know where you are in this process. My daughter ended up picking a school that she never would have looked at if she had gotten her SAT scores up a bit more. She too has picked a school that some people don’t get around here because she was accepted to much better regarded schools. In the end, I have come to believe that she has made a great choice and she will be somewhere that will be the best for her. Her brother helped her and me a lot with this because he kept reminding her that five minutes after graduation no one will care where anyone is going. The only person it will matter to is her-period! He also called this school months ago isn’t that something! I guess he isn’t totally clueless!
This process can really help these kids grow a lot even though it seems so crazy-and it really is much crazier than it needs to be I agree.
@LeftofPisa I must admit I too am confused by this ED situation and it would be great if someone could clarify it because people do come here for information as we know. My understanding of ED is only do it if you know you can pay within reason. If that is incorrect I would welcome being correct. I think there is confusion caused by people not being clear. I also caution everyone that whatever you read on here take with a grain of salt. I think ES is clearer than the SCEA rules which I never really understood since I never had an applicant who was ready to apply by the dates anyway!
I think schools love ED but it puts parents in a weak bargaining position for aid or merit. If it’s affordable it can be worth it for that probability boost.
@tranquil218 congrats! That’s wonderful.

My daughter’s voice teacher expressed his opinion about which school he thinks my daughter should go to at her lesson last night (happily, it coincided with my preference, although my preference is slight, and I think she would do well at both of the contenders); his reason was that he thinks BW has a more competitive music program and would challenge her more and take her out of her comfort zone in a way that will help her grow. Which is pretty much the same reason it is my preference, as well.
Seriously, I probably won’t have her decision until next Thursday at 11:59 p.m.
My DD did ED to TCNJ…we knew we could afford it without merit…she did get a small merit scholarship in the end. She did not want a HMFR type school, but one where she could be with academic peers but not be the biggest fish either.
We did ED as well, knowing we could commit if S was accepted. Going against all common wisdom regarding ED and merit, S received a really terrific talent scholarship from the school…a wonderful surprise to be sure.
We did ED too, to an Ivy that D15 considered at the time to be her dream school. Interestingly, the Ivy’s ED program said only that she could not apply to another binding early decision program or a SCEA program. However, the schools to which she wanted to apply EA said very clearly that she could NOT apply EA if she applied to a school with a binding ED program. This bothered me to no end because I am a very big fan of EA. D09 applied to most of her schools EA, so we had a very nice list of acceptances by the time the decisions for the HMFRs arrived in April. D15 was deferred but things ultimately worked out for the best. She was accepted at three schools where she felt that she would have been happy to attend. She went to an Accepted Students Weekend at the new dream school with my husband last week (I never get to go anywhere because I can seldom get time off from work) and came home loving the place, which is all that we really wanted at the end of the day.
My son did ED and NFN, I decided and he “reluctantly” agreed that the only way ED would work is if he stayed home on Halloween. However, since he changed his ED (we decided that his original ED choice was way way WAY HMFR for him), we had to bug his GC on the weekend to make sure the online stuff was taken care of.
It has saved a lot of heartache, so IMHO, if your DC tends to get stressed out, try for a few EA schools including at least one safety - no commitment but your DC should hopefully get one acceptance in the hopper.
