Wait wait wait… @Felicita did your S change his mind back again? You re-posted the list showing your S at Stanford? Did you grab an older version of the list by mistake? :-t

@wolverine86. Unbelievably the new one is correct. Can I just say how amazingly kind and compassionate admissions people can be when working with kids who are making tough decisions. Their good counsel and absolute belief that each student should attend the school that is right for him/her (finances aside) has completely astounded me.

Today is my daughter’s 18th birthday. I greeted her this morning and asked her how it felt to be an adult, where she planned to live now that she was grown up, and how did she think she would support herself. She took the joke in the spirit in which it was intended. It’s harder to see her as a grown-up than it was my older one, probably because this one is my baby. Also, my older one was like a grown-up from birth, in terms of being responsible and having good judgment.

@Felicita I’m so glad that they were able to work with your son. What made him go back to Stanford?

I have instructed the cabana boys to keep you plied with drinks today, @Felicita. They’re on me.

@green678 I think that just calming down and thinking about what you are gaining and not what you are losing when considering two incredible options really helped.

@Irishmomof2 sounds a lot like the speech I got at 18, without the humor and followed by the “imposed upon me” plan B if I didn’t have answers to the initial questions… “rent starts next Monday, $200 a month. Don’t be late.”

@suzy100 thank you!

My D will be 2,500 miles and 2 to 3 flights away (2 if the price is right). No major airport on either end, and a really dinky airport on the school end. Thank goodness she is mature and can handle the connections or I would be worried. She will have to free-load with relatives for Thanksgiving and can come home for winter and spring breaks. I’d send her to you @HeliMom74, but that would be a trip in itself!

One of my favorite college memories is collecting out-of-state classmates and bringing them to my house for breaks and homecooked meals and stuff. I hope my girl decides to do this.

My d will be 900 miles away. 2 flights. Or 1 flight and a train, car or bus…
South Carolina to Massachusetts! From the Palmetto State to the Bay State

Incredible map, @musictherapymom !

I try not to think about my d '15 being 13 hours away…but instead that she will be 11 hours closer than her sister’s school!!! That puts it in perspective. Also, having d’13 home this past year on a LOA has put things in perspective.

@giterdone - my father made my older sister and I promise we would live at home forever and take care of him when he was old, so we each vamoosed from the family home when we were 18! A different tack, but very effective!

@Felicita, wow! How are you with all of these changes? You seem remarkably calm.

@4CookieMonster I’m happy that he is content and happy…that has been our goal throughout this whole admissions journey. What we never anticipated were these choices that he ended up having to consider. In the end, it has worked out thanks to the kindness and understanding of others.

Plus…those cabana boys…

@Felicita- Just told S’13 about the switch to Yale when we chatted on Tuesday and then I saw your S '15 back on the Stanford list! Wow! We went through a very similar thing with Stanford and Yale after S '13 eliminated MIT. He also loved the idea of the houses and the undergraduate experience at Yale. For him, it was also the hardest thing to let go. I did a ton of digging for information to make comparisons during April of his senior year. He also got some very timely advice from a couple of total strangers that helped put things in perspective. It was after Stanford’s admitted student’s day (as you know, very late in the month) that he finally made his official choice. Those that knew him well said they knew it would be Stanford all along, but I think it wasn’t so clear cut. It’s just that Stanford is such a big deal on the West coast. For the top students it is usual to take a shot at Stanford and then the second school of choice is the excellent state flagship. Anyway, I think our boys are very similar, even down to academic interests and S '13 definitely found his great undergrad experience and sense of community. He is very involved in the social aspects of his living community and was a frosh council rep. Let me know if you have any questions and congratulations again!

Oh, and he does say now that he thinks the weather and New Haven would have been a minus for him at Yale…he is such an active kid and loves to run around outdoors in his shorts all year. He also thinks he is probably more of a west coat guy. It’s funny, when he first got off of the shuttle at Yale he texted that there was no way he was going there, but then they won him over. I think he would have been very happy there-just happier at Stanford. There were a lot of Stanford kids that made the choice between Stanford-Yale and Stanford-MIT. Where are you guys from? Maybe you are more comfortable with the colder weather?

@3girl3cats- S actually is one Stanford kid that would welcome some change in weather. He misses the rain!

D will be 1,696 miles away – and I don’t mind saying (considering my username) from the US Virgin Islands to Wellesley. I just bought our tickets up there for orientation and drop off. Sad for me, happy for her!

@critter . Wow, thanks for that post. We really could have used you and your S at our house over the past few days. I’m glad to hear that everything worked out so well for your S, and I am certain it will for mine, too! And I wish the same for all of our kids!!!
