@ILMom13579 We drove thru Illinois once years ago, made me appreciate Pennsylvania and the hills a lot!!! We are fortunate that our daughter chose a school only 65 miles away and she still says she does not plan to come home except holidays and summer…she chose not to take her car.

Not sure how hard it is to modify entries, but #41 should be the University of Michigan-Flint. The city and zip code are correct, but I think the folks at Bama would be a little shell-shocked to find they’d been moved to a snowier climate. The rest of the football teams in the SEC might be grateful though!! <:-P
875 miles - 13.5 hours
@Wrestlersmom , I’ve been away for a couple of days so maybe this has been hashed to death, but I live in a snowy area, and pickup trucks can be especially difficult to drive in snow even for people who’ve dealt with snow all their lives. There’s not enough weight over the rear wheels to give good traction. A lot of people will put a couple hundred pounds (bags of sand, etc.) in the bed over the wheels to help with this.
Both DS’15 and DD’14 will be 45 miles away 
. That’s a nice bike ride for DH, not so much for me with those hills, LOL.
@3girls3cats - I agree on the short breaks, particularly with winter weather and the risk of long delays. I am hoping that D will find good friends at school to share those times with. Another option is that we, or extended family, visit her instead. It is a nice excuse to explore another part of the country that we don’t have much experience with. A wonderful aunt and uncle have already mentioned that they may visit during Thanksgiving. 
D will be 1,063 miles away from home.

After the gap year, S will be 2600 miles away. S 2012 is 3000+ miles away, so we’ve been down this road before.
I know people don’t want to reveal where they live - unless they’re stupid like me and put it in their moniker - but it would be really fun to put a different color dot where the kid lives now with a line connecting the two dots. There could be some really wild distances!
I think it’s interesting that not a single one of our group ended up at the largest university in the country, our very own Ginormous State U. Interesting.
I feel really evil. Now that we’re through this I keep wanting to respond to the threads like this “Can a C ruin my chances to get into an Ivy League school?” with a simple “yes”. Escpecially since that particular one was posted by an 8th grader. Sheesh.
Lol, I was just posting about that thread, @PhxRising. What was funny was that the kid spelled it “Legue” in the title; I wanted to reply “no, but improper spelling might” but the kid spelled it correctly in the post so I refrained.
Feeling like our family is on a roller coaster right now. So very happy for my graduating twins, but already feeling sad about their departure. My D, who is enrolled in summer classes, leaves in 24 days… not that I’m counting. :-p We will get to have her home for 1 week between summer and fall. She will be a 14 hour drive, so weekends are not a possibility.
The past few weeks have been a whirlwind with the effective distraction of getting dorm purchases in order. But now that packing is well on the way to done, it is hitting me - esp. at night when the house is quiet…I keep having random crying spells (guess I bottle it up when the kids are around and let it out when alone in the wee hours). We have two younger kids who will be at home in the Fall, I work full time and my husband and I stay busy with interests and friends… everyone says all those things will help with this transition, but so far I am skeptical. It is such a weird feeling to be so happy for the kids, but so sad while grieving the end of an era. Sigh. Thanks for the vent fellow Frosh-to-be parents!
DS will be 560 miles, 8 1/2 hours away but no direct flight 
@Helimom74 Wow that’s a wonderful offer for Thanksgiving! Right now though we are planning to spend Thanksgiving in Norman since DS will have to be at a football game (in Stillwater) on Saturday. Don’t know yet if we will fly or drive but we had a particularly harrowing experience driving across the Texas panhandle one Thanksgiving when DS and his older sister were very young. Don’t want to do that again!
We are planning to visit in September when they have a home football game. Instead of a family day, OU does a Dads’ Day in the fall and Moms’ Day in the spring. But Dad’s Day is only a couple weeks before Thanksgiving so we won’t be going this year.
Thanks for venting @kidsrexpensive. I can relate! D1 will be 6595 miles away for her gap year (little chance to visit), then thankfully 100 miles for college. It still doesn’t feel entirely real as we have the summer together. I vacillate between being excited & apprehensive about her upcoming adventure and mourning the end of an era too. So thankful for texting, email & skype to stay in touch, not sure how we’d manage otherwise.
