I agree, the airplane ride is the big issue but it’s also more challenging if you have to cross time zones. It complicates travel and it makes it a bit more challenging to find the times to stay connected.
My D considered 1 school that was 2 flights away but decided it was too far. Those of you sending kids far away-very brave. I know it’s an added complication.
@Helimom74 what a generous offer. On another topic, I hear there are tornadoes in OK tonight. Stay safe.
I hadn’t thought of the time zones @3girls3cats, but in spite of the 3 hour difference I think it won’t be too bad. D is usually up much later than we are, so our hours may actually be more similar than they are now
I am seriously jazzed about maybe getting to fuss over kids who are far from home and need to be fed!
Thank you, @VMT. The storms are south of us, thankfully. I feel good about OU’s plan to keep students safe during bad weather.
I was about 90 minutes away from my parents, but never went home on weekends as I didn’t have a car and they both worked (so didn’t want to drive on the weekend) and hadn’t trucked me around for years since I have much older siblings. Yes, they helped with move-in and move-out, until my SO was able to help me.
Conversely, my SO would drive 90 minutes back and forth all summer after sophomore and junior year, every weekend, to see me. What some guys will do for a sympathetic chick LOL…
(yet, he would very rarely go home for the weekend and he was less than 30 minutes on public transit including walking to and from stations)
My DS will be about 3 hours away, and we are working on getting him to use the train to get home. We have Amtrak service within 20 minutes and the train ride is just about as long as the car ride. It is nice we have a suburban station just about the same distance from our house as the urban station, though he will have to spend 10 more minutes on the train.
At least we have a minivan for move-in move-out, and have cleared it out a few times to take a LOT of stuff. Wonder if we’ll even have to put the back seats down - he tends to travel light. But I think he might want a fridge at least, a small one. Thinking of having Amazon ship him one - that leads me to wonder what the mail and package delivery service is like - ours was pretty bad in college.
My brother was just under 1000 miles away, never flew, and stopped coming home for Christmas. They had trimesters so it wasn’t really worth it.
I had a little time so I synchronized the list with http://■■■■■■■/class2019 (some entries were there that weren’t here, and vice versa)

I’ve got an international: 3,459 miles!
@crowlady Can you please add my S to the list. He will be attending Northeastern University.
@woodsmom, hey you’re right! There actually is a benefit to the time difference! I was thinking more of the difficulties in travel. Traveling east means that you lose an entire day getting there and traveling each way means disruption and adjustment. I guess our kids are young enough to do it easily enough but even so traveling for a short break will probably be out of the question.
Mine will be more than 5,000 miles away the first year, then just mere 2,250
S’13 just came back home (for a day), it is so comforting to have my entire family under one roof, even for a few hours
Added Northeastern for @smurfette99 at http://■■■■■■■/class2019 and below:

I think I have added all the schools, 61 different ones represented http://www.mapcustomizer.com/map/Collegeconfidential%20%20map%202015 If I missed a school let me know
Thank you @crowlady. My son will be attending not me. I’m sorry if I didn’t state that.
My S will be 1,118 miles away. A 16hr55min drive away. Fortunately, we can fly there non-stop for about 3hrs.
@smurfette99 – non-stop makes all the difference! We are fortunate that D’s school of choice is near a major airport. I usually had to take 2 flights to get to my college, and sometimes had problems when the weather was bad. It’s no fun being stuck halfway…
Awesome map @musictherapymom, thanks for putting that together!
D will be 300 miles (5 hours). Same state.
You are so right @MamaBear16. Fortunately we live near a major airport and S’s school is near a major airport as well. I don’t think any of us could deal with that long drive. And considering DS doesn’t have a license and doesn’t seem concerned with getting one, we will continue to fly.
D will be the next state down, 454 miles, 7 hours by car. I don’t mind the drive, but it can get very boring as the entire state of Illinois is flat - it doesn’t get real interesting scenery-wise until we are almost into KY - unless you count the windfarms.
