Those of you who wanted your DC driving distance from home, I’m a bit envious right now. Bought fall break ticket plus get to school ticket in August for DS and am now contemplating who is accompanying him in August and who is going for family weekend in late October. My Southwest points aren’t accumulating nearly rapidly enough!
I feel your pain, @PhxRising. We are skipping fall parents weekend since it’s so close to fall break.
Forgot to add D to the list!

It would be interesting to see a Google Maps plot of this, however we are in final exam mode (college) and I’ve not time to do it…
Wonder also, how many different states and so on - no international?
My daughter will be 600 miles and 3 states away from us!
Only 4 states away, but 1,892 miles. :-S
1 state away. 2 1/2 hours. Perfect!
2 panhandles and piece of another state away, ~600 miles. 10+ hr drive, so I’m not coming home for Thanksgiving.
Same state, 105 miles. “I would be there in 3 hours for any emergency I couldn’t handle from here.” (That includes getting from work back to my car.)
@rhandco I have one started for you, will do more tomorrow http://www.mapcustomizer.com/map/Collegeconfidential%20%20map%202015
2400 miles and eight states, but grandparents are 5.3 miles on back streets, uncles and aunts are less than an hour, and cousin+wife are a couple of hours and in a wonderful city to visit - DC.
@MamaBear16 the reason I want to go to family weekend has more to do with my feeling like a part of the experience than seeing DS, who will be back from fall break for less than two weeks. For a parent who’s made it to most games, coached Odyssey of the Mind, judged speech & debate and in all ways figured out how to be a part of my kids’ activities, I feel like I need to go to the college and be part (even a small part) of it all. If I can picture things, maybe it will help me understand DS’s life a bit better. Plus we’re making a financial sacrifice over what we could have spent at GSU so I feel like I want to make sure we’re getting our money’s worth! Unfortunately, that financial sacrifice includes a lot of plane tickets!
@musictherapymom, very nice start.
900 miles away. I’ve already bought plane tickets.
3 states plus part of a district, 250 miles, 4 1/2 hours unless DH drives, in which case it’s more like 3 3/4. I regret that my father is almost 90 and in a nursing home. He loved DC and we used to go there all the time when I was little. If he were younger, I would have bet anything that he’d just drive down there on a random weekend to visit D15.
I have no idea how many states, but it’s almost exactly 3,000 miles for us according to Google Maps. We have no plans to ever drive there.
@PhxRising - I completely understand. I’m the kind of parent that wants to visit, too. We just decided to spend the travel money for Thanksgiving instead of that weekend, since it comes about a week after Fall Break. I’m sure that when the time comes, I’m going to wish I had planned to visit.
Cool map!
S’15 will be less than 30 miles away from home, and 3 miles from D’12.
I do not envy those of you with large distances to cover for move in/out days and the “usual” shuffling back and forth. You will cope. Everyone does.
D will be about 35 minutes up the road. But if you have ever been in Hampton Roads, you know you’re rolling the dice on I64 travel times.
I think @STEMFamily is the only other poster sending a child to OU, but if there are others and the kids can’t make it home for Thanksgiving, etc…I will happily feed them! We are roughly 40 minutes from Norman and I always cook too much anyway.
My D will be 2,500 miles away more or less. I’m not sure it matters much once you need to get on an airplane. I’m working through the logistics now, but almost anything can be ordered online these days so I know we’ll be able to buy and/or ship anything we forget. And very quickly I will hand all those logistic responsibilities over to D to manage so it is a short term consideration. Thankfully.
I agree @woodsmom, it doesn’t matter much once you can’t drive there. I went to college about 1,000 miles from home and other than the initial move-in and move-out at graduation I didn’t have or need any help from my parents.
