Parents of the HS Class of 2015

@Felicita, that’s quite a switch! You must have had a very “exciting” 24 hours with your son. Now, is this the absolute final answer?

@FCCDAD, I feel the same way.

Last day of school today and last band concert tonight. From here out it is going to be a whirlwind with AP Euro test on Friday, graduation party this weekend, Physics C test on Monday, graduation on Tuesday, advisor appointment by phone to register for classes on Wednesday, and leaving for drum corps early Friday morning.

DS has a 5 on BC calc (but no math this year) and was hesitant to go to Calc III. But the assistant Dean pretty strongly encouraged it on our visit. So we ordered the book (calc II and calc III are the same book) and after looking at a couple on-line syllabi, he has decided he has covered all of calc II and doesn’t really want to repeat it. We’ll see what the advisor says next Wednesday too.

Wow @Felicita, I hope for your sake and peace of mind that your S isn’t going to do a Trifecta with an H P or M 3rd choice! Sending virtual strong fruity drinks your way!

About APs, D’s college takes only 4s and 5s and with the health issues she’s had this semester she doesn’t think she can aspire to that for AP Physics tomorrow. However her HS requires all students in the AP classes to take the exam or forfeit the credit so she’s going in to take the test looking at it as a review for the class final exam 2 weeks from now.

About cars, D is not taking one. There’s decent public transport from where we live to her school; it’s a small, self-contained campus with what students say is good bus service to the other 4 colleges where they can cross-register as well as to nearby towns and the mall. I keep forgetting to ask her whether she wants to take a bike–we could fit it comfortably in the back of our minivan.

Graduation here is May 30; it looks like many people posting are graduating much earlier.

@LeftofPisa @3girls3cats S was mulling over everything and decided that his gut and heart were telling him to choose the other school. So, he communicated with both schools and they very kindly and compassionately facilitated the switch. They were so nice and understanding. Said that this kind of thing happens every year! So it all worked out in the end. And this is the final choice!!

@crepes lol on the trifecta! I can say with 100% certainty that that is not going to happen!!!

Hey, y’all! It’s AP English Lit day. Am I cheesy enough to go where you think I may be going with this? Well, how long have you known me now? Of course I am. Enjoy your day!

AP Physics 1 today. (SOG - no song for the physics geeks?)

We are not expecting anything too stellar. The course as taught did not really align with the new test, though the kids themselves have tried to figure out how to best prepare for the exam together. From that perspective, it was a good experience. I think if all 12 kids could work together, they could get a 5  No worries here. She is barely hanging on with major senioritis kicking in. Calc went fine yesterday. And just Econ left next week.

She will be in class until 6/15 doing “useless” projects (see what I mean about the senioritis).

Counting down …

@Felicita I can’t imagine that 24 hours. I’m glad that worked out. You deserve a few extra fruity drinks.

Graduation here is May 28. Having a smaller party for family and close friends that weekend as D2 and S chose the “buyout option” for a grad party and we’ll give them the cost difference from what we would’ve spent on a full-blown party. $-)

Prom was last Friday and all went well with that. AP Chem seemed to go “Ok” for D2, and she has Spanish Lit and Stats next week. Her last track meet will be the Conference meet this Saturday.

S will have 2 final exams each day on 18th/19th and then will be done. After 3 AP tests and a “Final Exam” trip to Cedar Point for Physics (a school tradition :)) ) D2 will have 2 remaining exams on the 18th/19th.

Things are definitely winding down in a hurry here!! :!!

Sorry about that. My kid is taking whatever version of physics is being tested next week, and I find the whole thing very confusing. But I have the perfect way to make it up to you. How about “She Blinded Me With Science” – but live and with Buzz Aldrin as a the guest vocalist?

Love the Cedar Point Physics field trip idea!!

SOG - love that! It came out while I was an engineering student at Penn State. Of course, those of us of the female persuasion loved this song.

@Felicita … The vast majority of students love it as well…understandably so. :-bd For those who don’t want to go or can’t afford it, there is an alternative traditional final exam. D2 is a roller coaster nut, so there was never any possibility she would choose the traditional final. Cedar Point is debuting a new coaster this season, so she’s totally psyched (or should that be physic-ed :-/ ) for the trip.

D “hated” physics last year until the post-AP “physics olympiad” her teacher puts on every year—a competition where the students had to solve engineering-type design problems using physics. She got so excited about the hands-on applied physics I had a faint glimmer of hope for a minute that engineering might be in her future after all. (Not to be, though.)

@Felicita - what a switch! From one coast to the other, from great weather to horrible weather  Maybe we will see each other on campus one day?

@Kelowna It is s big switch…but the right one for him for the undergraduate experience. They do get a few sunny days, don’t they??? It was raining like cats and dogs the first day of Bulldog Days, so he definitely did not select based on weather!

Weather can be a tricky and unpredictable thing and unless it meant moving to the tundra and acquiring the skills of the Inuit, I would not advise a kid to make a decision on college based on good weather. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice benefit, but not one that can be counted on.

I lived in CT for many years and there are cold years and moderate years. It’s not a climate I’d want to live in permanently, only because it feels like winter never wants to release its grip-the other seasons are sublime, but four years would be perfectly fine. As long as you’re dressed appropriately, it won’t get in the way and yes, there are plenty of sunny days. We moved to CA many years ago during a series of wet years. I was incredulous that people were crowing about their great weather. I swear, I didn’t see the sun for months and the temps were in the 40s and 50s from January through May. Every once in awhile there’d be a glorious warm morning or afternoon that would tease me into thinking nice days were on their way–and then it would rain again. I told everyone I would have preferred snow, sun and 30 to that endless string of dreary, cold days. If our drought pattern shifts next winter-and many of us are praying for that-those Stanford students expecting good weather are in for a major surprise.

@FCCDAD D narrowed it down to UVA and W&M. There was a lot of back and forth on that one. In the end, W&M just “felt right” to her. But it was a very, very close decision.

@Felicita: At least that’s one less person using California’s scant water. (Although I suppose they will fill his spot with another). Must have been a crazy 24 hours though! Congrats!

@FCCDAD A fellow student in DS’s program chose UVA over a lot of other great options including a full ride at NYU. She really liked the feel of the place. So certainly there will be many happy students there in the fall.

@Mom24boys, sending positive thoughts your way.

I hope that you will be able to tell your younger sons in the right way and in the right place. I do think that waiting until the school year is over might be wise, but I would also have a “so you found out on your own…” speech ready :frowning:

We have chronic serious illness in our family, and it has made us re-evaluate some of our priorities. We just don’t spend as much money on clothes or things as most people, we’d rather have a relaxing vacation with our family as our health situation allows.

CT has been having more extreme winters for the past few years, unfortunately, but spring and fall are both divine (if too short-lived) and summer is great when it isn’t too humid.

CT - and New Haven, specifically, are home to probably the greatest pizza joints in the country, though.
