Sorry to hear about your Mom @shoboemom . Mine passed away last year after a pretty amazing year on hospice. We all knew it was coming but it was and is still very hard.
I volunteered to chaperone at Project Graduation. What was I thinking? I become very cranky by 10:30 p.m. and I have to be there until 12:30 a.m.!
One of my daughter’s friends isn’t going to go to college. She got accepted to the Musical Theater program at Fairleigh Dickinson, but neither of her parents went to college and they didn’t understand their financial aid letter - they can’t afford to send her there. So sad.
@shoboemom So sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. Virtual hugs to you and your family.
I am sitting in my kitchen in a quiet house drinking coffee and breathing deeply. The last few weeks have been so busy! Graduation was Saturday and it was wonderful. S’s Val speech was beautiful. He celebrated the entire class and was so poised. It was a proud mama moment and a few tears were shed.
The group grad party was on Sunday. It was so nice to have all of his friends celebrating together. All of the out of town relatives went home yesterday and I finally feel like life is getting back to normal.
S started his summer job today. Let summer begin!!!
My son’s Project Graduation is over at THREE AM! He is NOT going needless to say, and it sounds really bogus - some indoor swimming and snacks.
My son started his paid “internship” yesterday (they call it an internship and it is in his anticipated major, but of course he doesn’t know anything yet!). Today he left for work in business casual (which, to be honest, cost me more than he will probably make this summer), with his entry key card on his belt loop. I SO wanted to take a picture of him!!! OMG he was SO cute in his business casual attire with his hair combed and his key card on his belt!!!
OK, Ya’ll. Got that out of my system! I WILL resist taking a picture and telling him he looks cute!
Not quite ready for him to be so grown up!
I never heard of Project Graduation, but just looked it up.
This Friday evening, the high school is opened up to the Seniors. They bring in a bouncy bounce, a climbing wall, and we have a pool that I think is opened. The gyms are opened with all evening basketball going on. And pizza and goodies are provided along with game prizes. My S’12 loved it. D’15 looking forward to it. Friday is her last official day of school. Monday is the senior class trip. Graduation isn’t until the 26th. So, we still have time…
@shoboemom, I am so very sorry for the loss of your Mama. I’m glad you had time with her before she passed, and I hope there are memories to make you laugh when there are tears. Hugs to you!
Our school does Project Prom. I wish it were done more like what you describe, @VMT, for your project graduation. But, unfortunately, our Project Prom always ends up being way over-the-top, with parents working all year to raise over $20K to have an extravagant affair. Years ago it was in the school, and parents decorated and rented the bounce house, played movies in one classroom, had donated snacks in another room, basketball and volleyball in the gyms, and did it all at minimal cost.
@Shoboemom - I am so very sorry for the loss of your mother. It sounds like she was very involved in your life and I hope that you have wonderful memories to carry you through this time. I’m glad to see you back here. (((Hugs)))
D1 graduation ceremony tomorrow night. She still hasn’t set up her university Student Financial Services account (or maybe hasn’t added us as authorized payors?) to let us start paying tuition and fees. Technically she could enroll in the monthly payment plan as late as July, but I really think delaying setting that up is a bad idea.
Shoboemom I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. Hugs to you and your family.
Congrats to all of our kids who are graduating!! They did it!! My D still has over 2 weeks to go until graduation. A few days later we are off to orientation. Our school also has a school sponsored event following graduation - designed to give them a safe place to hang. She won’t be home until 6 am.
Enjoy these last few moments of high school…
@shoboemom, sending hugs.
@shoboemom - I am so very sorry to hear of your loss! I have been out of the loop for a few weeks and am just catching up.
@twinsmom15, here’s an easy way to break it up:
In my school, the Sal looks back at the years together-- very much a “hey guys, we shared some awesome times together” kind of a speech.
The Valedictorian looks forward, with advice for the class.
Congrats to your kids!!!
After a 2-1/2 week hiatus, the “lunch maker” is back in business!
S’15’s job acquiesced to the required days off needed for orientation, family summer vaca and Biology event, so no disrespect to SOG…
I am very sorry to read about your loss @shoboemom. Many moons ago, we had to leave my grandfather’s funeral and drive all night through multiple states to make my brother’s college graduation the next day. He even offered to skip it but my grandmother wouldn’t hear of it. To this day, I don’t know how my Mom made it through that with such grace. My thoughts are with you.
D’15 graduates this Saturday. Lesson learned: if your child’s high school requires all girls to wear a white dress with white shoes…do not wait until the week of to shop. Dress was no problem. Shoes were an entirely different matter. Managed to find the last pair of size 8 white pumps at 7PM last night. And on sale!
@shoboemom so sorry for your loss, it sounds like your are handling it all well, and I too am glad that your D will not be too far away next year, another confirmation that she made the right choice. I am an only child who has lost both parents, so I do feel your pain. It is a new stage of your life, natural progression yes, but still not easy.
We are all done here, everything went well with ceremonies, party at our house, family and friends, but I am glad to be done. Honesty, I think I enjoyed the IB ceremony more than the actual graduation, the kids and teachers that spoke were amazing. It gave me a whole new respect for the IB program at our school.
My 13yo just left today for a 5 day hike in GA, which is only worry some because he passed out yesterday at swim practice, I will worry until he gets home on Sunday.
My son’s Project Graduation is $150 - I cannot imagine dropping that on a party with 10 friends at most and 400 others…
We might be relocating, and the one school recommended is a public school with a strong IB program. I’ll definitely be doing some research on IB if things start to progress towards moving.
@ITBgirl, what happened that made him pass out? Don’t you just hate worrying! It’s a mom’s life.
We are headed out tonight for orientation tomorrow, then class registration on Friday! She has worked and reworked her plan for classes. I really hope it works out as she has planned out. For the honors college, they get to register now for Fall and for Spring, but they now have a new policy that you can only register for 2 honors courses per semester…a little disappointing, but workable. I’m so excited and nervous for her.
Ok, so one of my roomies (the 3rd one I’ve been contacted by, a bioengineering major) smokes hookah as a hobby … any thoughts besides don’t do it, of course? I had to google it to see what it was. I guess it’s not illegal, but it can be as damaging as tobacco apparently, whatever it is. My OCD mom is really worried.
