Parents of the HS Class of 2015

We found Twin XL fitted at Macy’s on sale for much less (can’t remember the exact price though).

I think we’ve decided to go with Target - I can get them for about $12 apiece and if we pay over $25, we get free shipping. We figure 3 should be good, and I like the color selection there. 2 to switch out while washing and 1 for “what if.” I’m glad we’re starting the process, though we still have a lot to get.

We’ve done a little shopping and also need to coordinate with D’s potential roommate. We have most of the bedding (it helps that her dorm does not have the XL beds) and items for the dorm room and want to find out about refrigerator/microwave rules.

D’s graduation gifts were almost all cash, gift cards and small items (jewelry) but at a graduation party we attended this weekend we saw a big bottle of Tide being given as a gift, not the most practical to bring as the grad is going to school 1200 miles away, but I’m sure it will be put to use ahead of time.

I got my daughter a bag of the detergent pods. It will be easier to pop two or three of them in a Ziploc bag on the way to the basement laundry than to lug a jug.

Someone else suggested bringing a plunger for those kids living in suites. Yeah, they can call Maintenance, but a plunger situation is usually an ASAP situation.

It’s been a while since I’ve been on CC - here’s the update. the Spawn:

  1. finished out her HS softball career - pitched a nice game but lost in the State Semi-Finals, but did get a hit in her last HS at bat.
  2. navigated prom successfully.
  3. graduated the 1 st Sunday in June.
  4. Found a room mate.
  5. selected her 1 st semester classes
  6. Is playing summer softball - 4 weeks weeks to go.
  7. Is currently in Barcelona with her posse mates for their graduation trip.
  8. her school is about 80 miles from hoe, though we'll likely not see her too often.

As I was catching up I read there was more than one partner of folks on the board I’ll. I hope things do improve for those folks.

Enjoy the fireworks today all!!!

We bought two XL sheet sets - we figure he can use a top sheet as a bottom sheet if the top ones aren’t used. (He already does that at home…).

Other than that, planning to buy a mini fridge in August.

Graduation narrowly avoided rain, then just went on a short vacation.

don’t bother with extra sets of sheets. One set is really enough. Kids Pull off to wash and dry and then remake. One cute idea I got from cc for my older d is to put an envelope with cash in-between the fitted sheet and the mattress. Write on the outside " call me when you find this" . You then know when ( or if) the sheets get washed. In practice I didn’t put the envelope far enough down in the bed and it crinkled. D1 investigated and found the cash- she still called! Now I am thinking about it a ziplock bag may work better and the money would stay intact if accidentally washed.

Mrs. Wolverine is handling all the practical items (sheets, storage, décor, etc.) whilst I have been put in charge of electronics (laptop, optical drive, printer, etc.). We’re each thoroughly enjoying our niche shopping. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s an interesting idea about the envelope @Sally22. On the other hand, I am not sure I really want to know.

What what, you mean I can get away with not washing my sheets all semester?

We found sheets that will work for us. We just need to order them now.

i would say 2 sheets max…if one set gets spills/stains, the other one is available. 3 is too much.

On July 15, Amazon will be having a big sale. My plan: fill my cart or “Save for Later” with items now, and then check starting at midnight on the 15th to see what has gone down in price and by how much.

Ack, we forgot that IB scores were up and tried late tonight to get in but can’t assess account, will have to wait to hear from her IB coordinator

My darling daughter spent the last two days at her freshman orientation, then, having gotten a good look at and a night of sleeping in the actual dorms, on her way home spent a large portion of her graduation gift money on a whole new bedding set - rainbow neon zebra theme - with neon pink sheets. Ouch. Hurts the eyes. But she said it is desperately needed in the dull dorm rooms.

She also asked us to purchase for her a brand new mattress. She described the mattress at the dorms as feeling like “they piled a bunch of yoga mats on top of each other, then put them in a sack.”

Three sheets are not too many. We keep four sets for each bed - two winter-weight fleece or flannel, and two summer weight jersey or percale. Fabric wears out faster if you don’t give it a chance to “rest,” and having three or four sets makes the sheets last longer than wearing out three or four sheets and replacing them as they wear out/rip.

LadyArwyn that is the most perfect description of those mattresses that I have ever seen! We just finished an 11 hour drive to a two-day non-stop orientation. It went well but now she is a bit overwhelmed with all the stuff they threw at her ( and us). She did not register for classes at orientation; she registers next week and is currently stressing about her schedule. She seemed very happy for the past two days - ( thank goodness lol). She is able to place out of chemistry but was still planning to take the into class anyway; the advisor talked her out of it and said it is not recommended. She is technically finished with her math requirements for her major but on a personal level wants to continue with math. They are all required to take English regardless of what they come in with. So next week she sits in front of her computer and tries to get her classes…if they are closed she signed up for some kind of non-school service that texts you when somebody drops a class and it becomes available. We ordered the books- they will be packed up when we arrive on campus. The next few weeks are going to fly by…

Got a disappointing email this morning from my kids’ high school counselor…at awards night, when they recognized DS for his NM Commended status, they announced that a local large corporation was awarding a $1000 special scholarship to go with it. Turns out they were reading from an old script and there is no special scholarship. Disappointing, b/c although DS has been award wonderful FA, he does have a bill due in August that he needs to pay and he was planning on that scholarship being part of it. He’s away working at a camp all summer so I’ll have to text him the bad news, but am dreading doing so, sigh. Ah well, we’ll figure it out.

So was that the real reason that Columbia girl dragged her mattress around, she was protesting the mattress itself… anyways I’m going to bring a memory foam pad with me to stick on top of the mattress, under the sheets, in order to make it comfy.
