Parents of the HS Class of 2015

@LadyArwyn Check with the school’s Housing and Food office before making that mattress purchase. Some schools have strict rules about mattresses. A padded mattress topper (we got a 2" memory foam topper) can make all the difference in the world.

I second what Helimom said about the mattress purchase. I know that a mattress is one of the items D is not allowed to bring to school.
D got her room and roommate assignment yesterday and actually sent me the email. She got the potential roommate she met on the schools admitted student FB page and the could see where their room is on a posted floor plan. It’s an end room on the 2nd floor. She is happy

Compared to the tuition bill, $29.99 is a bargain  The beds are uncomfortable enough that I’ll splurge on the sheets. Plus, personally, I swear by their jersey knit sheets.

More to the point, even if it’s allowed, most (all?) colleges will require you to leave the room as you found it, which means finding a place to store their mattress until May.

Hi sorry I am new and don’t know how to delete … was trying to post how it was beyond disappointing that the award ended up not coming with the money. :frowning:

Anyway I just bought a memory foam mattress topper (XL) at ALDI last week and a sheet set and set of towels this week at Tuesday Morning. Move-in Day is August 13.

My son was just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in February. He is feeling overwhelmed with dealing with that on top of the whole leaving home thing. If anyone had experience with having a diabetic child at college I’d appreciate hearing about it. I do know that the school has a full-time endocrinologist and full-time diabetes educator on campus and we’ll be contacting them.

Mattress toppers- can you easily cut a king size into two twins, or should I just purchase 2 twin-sized? Do they make 2" mattress toppers in XL? Where (Costco?) does one purchase one?

@mtrosemom, I wonder if our D’s are going to the same college as mine got her room and roommate assignments yesterday as well and we also studied the floor plan last night. Either that or a coincidence.

@savvyone, a lot of kids are getting their assignments now, but it may be the same school. Message me if you are curious.
@ItsJustSchool, I got a twin XL 2" foam mattress topper on Amazon. Bed and Bath has them too. Kohls, Target, and Penny’s might have them also. Google and see what you get. Here is the one I bought on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-2-Inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B002NEG15E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1436384476&sr=8-2&keywords=2+mattress+topper. (let’s see if the link stays up.) Another CC parent recommended it. It was ~$60.

The topper @mtrosemom linked is the one we bought. Daughter has been sleeping on it while she’s in the dorm this month and says it is “divine”.

Re: Mattresses…Put one more attaboy in the column for UKy. All the new dorms have Tempurpedic mattresses. <:-P

MuggleMom19 I am sorry to hear about your son. My older daughter’s close friend/suite mate has diabetes and has not run into problems. I believe she has a 504 plan (?) which allows priority housing. This girls mom wanted the girl in a suite to minimize her chances of being alone- although in a corridor style dorm they are not alone ( they might be alone in a room). There is also a hospital down the road that she used once to adjust her medication. So far things have gone well for her.

@Skieurope Seeing as my tuition bill is $0 because of my scholarship, I guess $29 seems expensive.

Hey everybody, as some of you may remember, I’m leaving for glider encampment in a couple days, which I was slightly regretting going because I would have to break in my powered training. Now I’ve heard that they are BRINGING a Cessna 172, the type of powered airplane I am learning to fly, TO GLIDER ENCAMPMENT!!! So maybe, just maybe, I’m hoping I can get a few flights in while I’m there! At the rate I’ve been going lately (about 1-2 times a week) even if I flew just once I wouldn’t be behind. Maybe I Can have my cake and eat it too - be with my girlfriend and fly gliders and also fly powered - perhaps even with her!!! I’m so excited!!!

“don’t bother with extra sets of sheets. One set is really enough. Kids Pull off to wash and dry and then remake.”

One of the realities I had on campus was the distance to the laundry room and the frequency that the washers and sometimes dryers were full. I would never send my kid with only one set of sheets just because of that.

However, at least his campus has FREE laundry - ours was $1 in quarters for each load! LOL for an Ivy education - bring your quarters!

@twogirls thank you, that is good to hear!

rhandco- I have girls who regularly will do laundry. Their dorm has laundry facilities on each floor, so it was ( and will be) very easy for them.

My eldest just graduated and her advice was one set was enough and maybe send a spare sheet for toga parties

Love that! ^^

Does anyone know if you can request an AP test to be scored again? It is the English Lit test and hoping that if the essays are read again then maybe the score will improve from a 3 to a 4.

@jennie11 As I understand it, they will re-score only the multiple choice. You have to put in a written request within some period of time of receiving your score. I do not think they will re-score an essay. However, I think you can request a copy of your essay.

Hey everybody, so while the C172 appearance is not confirmed, I’m hopeful! I’m leaving for glider encampment today, will be back in awhile.
