Parents of the HS Class of 2015

@tranquil218 so sorry, sounds like you have been wonderfully strong, losing your mom is never easy. So glad your D is doing well.

Has anyone here used Amazon Prime Pantry to send food to college kid? I just placed my first order. The shipping range seems very wide–Sept. 8-14.

@HeliMom74 not yet. Let us know what you think

What’s the difference between Amazon Prime and Amazon Prime Pantry? Also if the delivery isn’t within 2 days how can it be Prime?

I use Amazon Prime and Amazon Prime Pantry. Very different products.

Why would you use Amazon Prime Pantry - the same products take longer to deliver? For example, I looked at the Kind bars and they are offered by Prime and Prime Pantry.

Darn-my whole explanation just vanished when I tried to edit one more correction.

If you order Kind bars through Amazon Prime, you will receive a bulk quantity-maybe 4 or 6 boxes of them. If you order through Pantry, you will receive one (or however many you choose) box of them.

Can anyone else view a long explanation of the difference from me? I made an appt to go over Common App w my son and he just sat next to me. I wont be able to rewrite it all until later.

No, sorry, @grandscheme , just see a short explanation. Don’t worry about it though.
The Amazon explanation is here

lol thanks and sorry!

Thanks @scholarme - okay- that’s pretty interesting. Will need to investigate it more.

I just made a rookie error with my first mailed package. Initially H was going to Minneapolis on business so I thought I would send the stuff with him but his plans changed… So I though I would send my first package and test out the mail room. It had a premium car magazine (so a bit hefty) and so light stationery items. I thought I selected what was a flat rate envelope - sealed and addressed it and when I took it up it turned out to be the wrong envelope and I had to pay by weight - so the mailing cost ended up nearly the same as as the cost of the items I was mailing!

@tranquil218, sorry for your loss, it’s never a good time to lose a parent. Glad to hear that all of you are coping with all the bumps in the road.

@singermom4 You should have sent it “book rate”…(known as Media Mail) as that will be cheaper for heavy book ( but may take a while)

You can only use book rate if everything in the package is ‘media’ material.

@tranquil218 - I’m sorry for your loss.

I was fine when my older daughter went to college, but I have to admit, I am missing BOTH of my kids more now that the younger one is gone! Luckily, she has not let a day go by without a text! She posted on Facebook that she loves rehearsing with the University Singers more than anything else in the world, so I think she’s pretty happy.

I sent a bunch of stuff to DS by Amazon Prime Pantry. He got to choose what he wanted and I put in a few treats. It would be pretty silly, or even impossible, to send a pack of double stuffed oreos by Prime, but they fit nicely into the pantry box. He said it all got there.

@wrestlersmom, I know how you feel, but for us we had a year to slowly extract ourselves from thinking of ourselves as football parents. DS was a great player, player of the year for the whole state in the state football scholar-athlete awards, letters from college coaches, etc. But he decided during his junior year to not play in college which was a shock. Even though I was always worried he might get hurt, once it was taken away, I mourned a bit. But it’s better now  .

@tranquil218 I’m so sorry :frowning: . Take care of yourself in the middle of all this loss and stress.

Back to bed for me. Hubby brought back a nasty cold from Colorado and the fever is wiping me out :stuck_out_tongue: .

@tranquil218 I’m so sorry about the loss of our mom and your dad’s poor health.

We had a difficult death on the same day. My uncle and D’s great-uncle, whom she thought of as a grandfather since she has no grandparents, died after a long illness. The funeral won’t be until next month sometime, and my D wants to go, despite the fact that her school and the cemetery are both sort of in the middle of nowhere about 450 miles apart, and she has no car. I’m in the middle. So the logistics will be hard, and she will have to miss several days of classes. But if it’s really important to her, I will try to find a way to make it work. One of those times when you wish they chose a school in city with an airport.

We used Prime Pantry, but it is annoying. In some cases, the prices are much more reasonable.

I still look for Prime items as they ship for free, and Prime Pantry does not.

The problem where my son goes is that they only have one location to get packages for all students, and of course he is far from it. They do let them borrow a dolly so when I tried to space out a few packages, he ended up getting them all at once and having to use a dolly.

By sheer size, his care package won  Also, like others have mentioned, there was a huge push to get “prepackaged” care packages, but my son is really picky so as noted above, got to pick what he wanted and I shipped it to him. At least they email when the packages come so he can stop by after class instead of looking for a note on his door or in his mailbox.

<> tranquil, what a journey. It must be surreal. I am glad D15 seems to be adjusting well. My mom passed in the early 90s and sometimes I still think I should pick up the phone and call her about something…
