Thanks, we sure will. Though I am sure she will miss her new life, and her boyfriend.
My S18 has a few ideas about a major, but no ideas about where to go, or why to go where for that matter.
He’s somewhat better about schoolwork than his brother, but behavior issues have kept him out of most honors and AP.
Weird thing is, his PSAT scores have gotten him tons of attention from colleges, more than his brother - who was almost all AP and Honors. I guess they don’t ask on the PSAT whether the student is in AP or Honors classes?
As for missing a new boyfriend from college, my boyfriend in college drove two hours each way to see me every weekend. A keeper LOL. Obviously flying across an ocean every weekend is different
(the car he drove in was about 15 years old, freaks me out to think about it now)
I’ll chime in with the missing my boyfriend crowd. I have less than 2 weeks left until I go home. I’m looking forward to seeing my family, but I’ll miss him so much! I doubt we will see each other over the summer, except via Skype, of course. He’s going to be staffing a Boy Scout summer camp for a month during the summer, and I may not even be able to text him during that time because it’s in remote location. 8-> :x
Write letters.
I have letters from my college boyfriend, for the few weeks we didn’t see each other. They are pretty hilarious
Yes, send letters, send cookies. Depends on how close you were, but if you would have texted frequently, drag out a pen and paper for him.
I’d say if my son had a girlfriend that he communicated with over the summer, I’d be game to pay for him to get to see her at least once, if the cost wasn’t too crazy. Or meet in the middle somewhere.
My S is crawling toward the finish line…so many projects, etc. due this week that I don’t think he has slept or eaten much at all. I have posted it elsewhere on the site, but I don’t think I’ve mentioned it here – S was diagnosed with Celiac disease over spring break. I was expecting the doc to give him an acid blocker prescription, but instead he came out of the consultation with orders for bloodwork and an endoscopy. He had a terrific meeting with a nutritionist in the Food Services department after a couple of very frustrating weeks trying (and failing) to find enough to eat in the dining hall, but his project-working hours lately, combined with the dining hall’s opening hours, have prevented him from implementing the suggestions she and the chef had (chef even gave him his cell number and told him he’d prepare something special for him whenever he needed it). He says he has lost about 10 pounds since spring break…he wasn’t a twig before, but he wasn’t on the heavy side, either, so 10 pounds is a noticeable amount. We will drive to the campus tomorrow for his last orchestra concert and pick up whatever he has packed that he doesn’t need for the next week, including his bicycle. He is pretty sure his only final is the first or second day of finals week (which starts May 5), so he should be home next weekend.
If we work it right tomorrow, he can throw whatever’s left in the room in his car and go whenever he’s ready without a team move-out effort. Then he leaves on May 16th for an 8-day trip to Ireland with the orchestra, which should be an amazing experience! We have seen him much more frequently this year than we expected, since his school is just under 3 hours away, but we are all looking forward to having him home for the summer, especially his sister (D’20).
Good luck to all of the kids finishing their first year. I can’t believe how fast it’s gone!
I shared this with some friends, but thought some of you here could appreciate it too: My D is packing in between studying. Today she asked me if she had to clean the dishes before she packed them. So there’s that.
My D sent me a pic of the science experiment bowl she discovered. Where? On her desk! Hmmm.
She has some storage available on campus. Still, I think only one of us will go to pick her up so we have maximum space in the car. She’s accumulated things this year.
@suzy100 Lol! I told my D she should wash all her bedding before she puts it in storage. I also suggested that she not store any food that any varmints might be able to access: eat it, give it away, throw it away, or bring it home!
We are driving out to pick up my daughter tomorrow! She’s changing her major to Music Education, but she is thrilled with her school - she said she was embraced by the love of the Con her second semester. She loves it so much that even though she auditioned for the musical theater program and didn’t get in, she doesn’t want to go anywhere else.
It was an interesting year. I heard from her everyday for like, 2 months, but now I might get a text or two a week.
My daughter is done, packed, sleeping until the shuttle picks her up at 5:15 AM Thursday and due to arrive here Friday night! I can hardly wait to give her a huge hug. She has a great year, learned a lot, and did a lot totally on her own. We are so proud of her.
Aww I leave soon for a road trip to visit friends along the way to D’s campus (700+ miles away). We will come home towards the end of next week, at which point she’ll be with us for about 3 weeks then back for a summer internship near campus. As far as I know, the year has been a great success and I am really happy for her.
S is staying at school to do a 10 week paid research project. Will be home at the end of August until school starts in September. I think we will go out to visit him for our summer vacation
This year has just flown by! Time to ramp back up for S17 as he gets ready to work on applications this summer…
D15 will not be home until August. She has a 2 month internship after school ends that she is very excited about. She will be home for about 3 weeks before she and a couple of friends “road trip” across country to go back to school. She is very excited about the road trip too!
My D still has another week to go before she comes home for a few short (very special) weeks. Lucky for us, her summer internship isn’t too far from where we live so we’re hoping we’ll get to see her some before she goes back to school in August. The year has gone by so quickly! Congratulations to all our kids and to all of us too on making it through.
My D still has about 10 days to go and 3 more finals to take before she can come home. She is working locally so we will have the pleasure of her company for the summer. Counting the days… We have really missed her. It’s been a good year for her, with lots of growth and independence. While it would be nice to have her go to college a bit closer to home, going 3,000 miles away seems to have been a good decision.
I can’t believe that the first year of college is almost over! How did it go by so quickly?
My S called(!) Tuesday and said he was considering coming home yesterday for a few days…his only two finals are Monday and Tuesday, and he had literally nothing to do (except study, of course) until a department event Saturday evening. Most of his friends have exams today, tomorrow, and next week, so they were all studying hard. We had brought about 75% of his dorm room stuff home last weekend when we drove down for his last orchestra concert, so his move-out will be a breeze – he brought another 20% home yesterday, leaving just enough clothes, toiletries, and bedding for his last few days. He can check out of the dorm Wednesday afternoon, go to his last orchestra rehearsal for their Ireland trip, and hit the road.
His major requires Engineering Calculus I and II, even though it’s not an Engineering major, and Calculus I has been excruciating. He learned (the hard way) that the “smart” people take these two classes at a community college at home over the summer and transfer in the credit, so that’s now his plan for Calculus II instead of suffering through it in the fall.
I love having him home!
It is so great to hear that kids have done so well. Can’t wait to see our daughter tonight. My husband has the flight tracker going on his phone.
Reading this thread makes me want to jump on a plane and go see my daughter today
Wish I could beam you there @insanedreamer.
