Parents of the HS Class of 2015

Boy, I just made my younger daughter sound like a beast!! Lol- I guess they all have their issues. She is really not that bad- she is a sweet kid who likes to wear bows in her hair. Just a little intense, as many are.

oh boy. Making DS do Senior pictures is not going to be fun. Can’t believe what an ordeal it was just to get a head shot to submit to ACT!

It’s hard to keep up with you all when life gets in the way!

D’s school requires conceptual physics as a freshman class and then offers the opportunity to take AP Physics B as a sophomore or beyond and AP Physics C at the appropriate math level. D elected to skip AP Physics B and will consider C instead. The more I hear about B, the more it seems that it’s quite doable as a first physics class. I can’t imagine stretching it out to consume two years.

Most sophomores don’t take AP classes at D’s school. Some take AP Physics B, some take AP Comp Sci, and some are at a level in a modern language to take AP Language in that language.

Twogirls, my D is the same way except that she’s not vocal. She quietly ends up rewriting/recalculating other people’s parts in group work just because she can’t stand anything less than perfect and is also not happy when people try to hand things in at the last minute. She’s even done work preemptively rather than worry whether someone will come through.

LOL, STEMfamily!

For my son’s picture, I took his face from our Christmas picture (which was just done with a cheap camera on the timed setting) and edited it until it was big enough for College Board’s requirements! No way was I going to try to take his picture.

3girls my daughter has also done all the work in advance rather than worry whether the rest will come through. This is why she will no longer work in a group when given a choice. We actually used the school picture for College Board, it was kind of a pain but it worked. I guess we will need to do it again for the ACT. Question: will we have to upload a picture each time they take the test, or will they just use the one that is on file already? I assume that we just do it once? We have not yet done the ACT- I hate that long list of questions to go through ugh. I guess I will sign her up this summer for the October test. I had an issue signing her up for the SAT subject test because it kept saying that my email was already in use- I have an older daughter. Doesn’t college board know that we may have more than one child? I had to call them and get it straightened out. Thankfully that was very easy to do.

About AP physics - I think the idea is either take physics B in two years, or take physics C in two years, as Maxwell said, but not both. If he’s going to major in physics or engineering, then take C. if he’s going to major in chemistry, bio, or international business (LOL) then take B. If he’s a mediocre student, or doesn’t want challenge in physics, then just take regular physics or no physics - sad face.

IJD, in my school, Physics B with a 5 in national exam will get 8 credits for non-physics/engineering majors, like chem, bio. For someone majors in physics/engineering, physics B doesn’t count at all. Physics C mechanics gets 4 credits, or physics C both gets 8, for physics/engineering majors.

twogirls, they do keep pictures on file so you don’t need to upload one for every test, but D decided on her 2nd test session to change the 1st picture she had up.

I’m so happy to know that I’m not the only one with teenagers hating the camera. For the last few years most of our vacation pictures are of the kids with their hands in front of their faces, so frustrating!
Oh, and if I look at the Facebook page, I’ll find plenty of smiling pictures. So when it came time for SAT ID photos, I told them to dig one up from their friends since they seem to have better success with the camera.

Thank you Crepes. I hope mine does not decide to change the picture- getting the first one was difficult enough!

^Yes, D doesn’t look particularly happy in pictures that we take, but there are lots of good ones on her FB. She downloaded pictures from her FB page for the test ID.

Our HS has done the AP Physics over two years ever since we have been there. The Physics teacher thought that it was too much material to grasp over the course of a year so it was broken up into two. There is also regular Physics, a one year hs level course. My D’12 did year 1 of AP Physics and realized that it was not for her. Had no interest in taking the AP exam after year one. S’15 is planning on doing both years at this point.

His schedule for next year also includes, Precalc, Latin, Chinese, AP US Hist, English Lit, and Adv. Art.

I’ve started reading all the IB threads trying to figure out which courses to recommend to S15 for a reasonable course load. I think he should take HL history because I think that would be especially interesting at an international school. SL math probably wouldn’t cover anything new but HL math seems like a big leap, especially after no math for a year. Choosing only 3 HLs and 3 SLs will be difficult.

Our S15 is in the process of signing up for his IB courses at international school. So far he will take HL History, HL English lit, HL Econ. He does not love Math enough to take HL Math.

My D13 was told that she had enough aptitude to do HL math but she chose SL and easily got a 7. For her it didn’t matter because she is very humanities oriented but S15 might want to study computer science or science so I’m not sure that SL would cover enough material. Which language will your son study?

S15 will most likely stay with French but he loves German and has taken some Arabic. D13 took French.

I’m probably just spoiled because D just had her senior pictures taken and she loved every minute of planning and the session itself. It was the highlight of her week!

I’m on the fence about the Physics B change. I do think the material is covered at a very fast pace and I don’t think kids get a good “feel” for the subject. However, it is going to present a challenge at our high school. Most good science/math students take Physics B as their first physics class. Then they take Physics C as a senior. Under the new plan that would mean 3 years of high school physics which means giving up a different science. And if they make Physics C a two year course, how many high school juniors will have completed a calculus course by the end of their sophomore year? Only a handful at our school would meet that criteria and it is only going to get worse because the state is forcing us to make algebraII and trig both full year courses even for the Honors level.

Stem- your daughter already took her senior pictures? We do it in the fall of senior year. This physics B/C stuff sounds a little confusing, but it won’t impact us. She will be taking AP physics B junior year and AP bio senior year. Is anybody planning to take the October ACT?

two girls - no Oct ACT here. D won’t be ready to take ACT/SAT until later.

FromMD you do not have an October 26 ACT? We do not have one in February. I do not know yet whether the test will be offered at our HS, but if not it will be offered at a school nearby.

twogirls - I meant D is not taking the Oct test. Her school is not one of the testing sites but there are other places nearby where she can take the test. It’s just that she will NOT be ready for the Oct test… I think she will be ready for Dec or Feb test though so that’s what we are aiming for.
