shoeboe, I’d take pretty good scores with no studying as a win, and it’s early going, so she has plenty of time to retake if she wants. Is she taking the ACT?

So for the X/2400 score, we’d add the 3- 3 digit scores, and for the x/1600 you just add the math and reading.
I think the essay is just separate, but I wasn’t expecting that MC, 2 digit score. What do I do with that?

The essay score is folded into the 3-digit WR score. So the 3-digit score is derived from the MC and essay. Does that make sense?

shoboemom, in 6 months she will have grown. Her brain will be bigger and she can get a higher score then if she needs it. The score she has is a beginning junior year score and if she thinks of it that way she should be pleased no matter what. For her age it is probably great, and if she needs it higher, she shouldn’t despair that she’s already done her best. Her best is still a moving target, especially if she didn’t even study.

The MC score times 10 is what you use as PSAT confirming score for NMSF. You can see from comparing that to the actual 3 digit writing score, how much effect the essay score had on writing score.

Shoboe I think the MC score + the essay = the 3 digit score. For example when you take a practice test you will get a 2 digit MC score- let’s use the number 40- then you will get ( or estimate) an essay score- let’s say it’s a 9- then you will go to the chart and look for the number 40 on the left side column and then look for the number 9 across the top, and when the two points intersect that will be your 3 digit score.

To get your score out of 2400 you add math + CR + writing. To get a score out of 1600 you add CR + M. It sounds like your daughter did a pretty good job given that she did not prep. She certainly has the time to prep and re-take if she wants, or she can try the ACT.

I totally get the good mood followed by not so good mood thing… Sigh here as well!
My daughter is happy because she did well on her Spanish listening section. She attributes this good fortune to watching the news in Spanish every morning. We take her good moods whenever we can…

Softball girl is counting down the hrs till the break next week. Been a tough few weeks and she has worked her butt off in AP Chem and APUSH. She needs some down time.

Congrats to those done with SAT’s. I am heading out for a glass of wine with a couple of moms of my D1’s friends. I will raise a glass to celebrate their success! ( any excuse)

Congratulations to your daughter, Twogirls! I was impressed by her dedication to improving her Spanish. Is she taking AP Spanish or HL IB Spanish this year?

Thanks Apollo!! She is taking AP Spanish and loves it. The hardest part is when they do the AP listening sections but she has really improved by listening to Spanish TV. Last week they had a debate and she had a great time.

They do practice listening sections for the AP test-.these practices do not count in their class grade.

At this point we don’t know where he will apply besides Berkeley, Santa Barbara,
And San Diego. Berkeley average Cr+m for EECS is 1560. My son has 1530.

Majority of kids here goto UC’s and they don’t Superscore.
I don’t see the level of motivation/excitement to find/visit schools that I read on this
Board, in my Son.

I completely agree with 3girls3cats about perfecting SAT being a waste
Of time. I have told him to talk to his counselor at school and go from there.

Etho my daughter does not get excited visiting or talking about schools because she is too busy working ( it’s that perfectionist thing) so don’t feel bad. My husband and I love it - but not her. She won’t even talk about it with me unless I make an appointment… Sometimes she will utter a tiny phrase that is college related and I will jump all over it, and then she will tell me she has too much work to do to finish the conversation. We saw about 10 schools so far and the only two she LOVED cost $53,000 ( big ugh- she knows she needs money to attend those schools). We will see what happens in February on our next trip.

A 1530 cr/m is excellent- I can’t imagine having to take that over to get another 30 points ( which may or may not happen- remember at that level it is much harder to increase and you stated they do not super score). Remember that schools have a range- if they say 1560 it means there are some higher and some lower. I agree that he should talk to his GC.

Eth0up - does your son have other things that show he is strong in math? Good grades in advanced classes, etc. Is he going to take the math 2 subject test or a calculus AP TEST ? 730 is an excellent score on its own, and if he has other things that show he’s interested in and good at math, I can’t imagine them being worried about it not being an 800. The Math 2 subject test goes through precalculus and had a generous curve.

Eth0up - I agree with PinotNoir. If your son has anything that shows his interest/strength in math, that may be the best solution. If he scores high on the SAT2 or AP exam, then the 730 would be seen as a “fluke”.

I would really hate to retake the SAT I with his scores. Truly awesome. I’m not so sure at that level, a higher math score would do anything. A higher score won’t guarantee admission and his current score doesn’t eliminate him from consideration at even the most selective universities.

Pumpkin Latte with a healthy helping of rum topped with a bit of whipped cream, cinnamon & liberally sprinkled with 5 mg of ground Xanax takes the edge off any day…someone posted this on Facebook and the recipe was a huge hit.

Sorry I haven’t posted much lately. Recovering from a wicked bout of norovirus. Yuck!

eth0up – My D1 (HS2012) had CR and W scores higher than her SAT math subsection. Now she is an engineering student at Berkeley, loving it and doing well. I advise against your S retaking the SAT, especially not for UCs, because they don’t superscore. Instead focus on rocking the SATII Math2, APs, GPA, and extracurriculars that show “related interest”.

sally305 – my D2 (HS2015) is a dancer. She dances competitively, but she just does it “for fun” so maybe not as committed to it as BunHeadGirl. My D2 plans to be a STEM major, but wants a college where she can take dance classes and/or participate in a rec-level group. We are mostly looking at mid-size and large research Us for her, and I think most such schools would have some sort of suitable dance program. I don’t think dance will be a make-or-break decision point for her.

I hope you enjoy your visits Giterdone. The schools that we want to visit are not offering tours during the December break. We will do some visits in February and April.

Got a double dose of junior year stress this evening: math SAT work followed by allowing my kid to drive home. She has been doing ACT practice in science, English and reading, but only one math test. Today she actually volunteered to do a math ACT- I was a bit stunned. It’s a little tricky prepping for both tests at once.

I have been hearing that the science ACT is more about reading comp and less about science, but my kid disagrees. She claims that for many of the questions she just knows the answer because she has already learned it in class- no need to look at the charts etc. I suppose it’s a little bit of both.

My college sophomore is scheduled to come home Tuesday, but she really really wants to come home tomorrow. Not exactly sure why because her suite mates are all there and she loves the school- I guess she needs a break. I told her no because it would mean missing her hardest class ( in her major) on Tuesday morning and I just do not think it’s a good idea. She has been texting me all day. She has a ride home tomorrow but my husband says they are expecting snow and I don’t want her on the roads ( I will be saying that even when she is 30). Tuesday her friend’s dad is taking them home and my H will do the return trip.

Getting ready for Thanksgiving at my SIL where the conversation will be college, more college, and nothing but college. I will put on my " smile and nod" face" when they all inject their opinions on where my kid should go. Should be fun- perhaps I will bring an extra bottle of wine.

My daughter is in a fabulous mood this evening ( I am being sincere- not sarcastic!). I commented to her and she agreed but then reported that she has a lot of work to do. I told her that school work is like laundry. Not sure why her mood is so good but I will take it whenever it comes!

Two weeks until the SAT and three weeks until the ACT. Better stock up on some fish!!

S had a very good week. He found out he made first chair in the Wind Ensemble. This after not making the top band last year and spending the year with a bunch of kids who couldn’t have cared less and were very disrespectful of the assistant band director. I was very proud of how he handled it last year. Now to get first chair was icing on the cake! :D

We are really looking forward to next week. Driving out to spend Thanksgiving with D13 because she can’t come home due to marching band. This is where being withing driving distance (at least for a long weekend) comes in very handy. (And cheaper than flying 3 of us!)

Haha…we are holding out for the DEPTHS of winter to do that. Just need some warm-weather schools to consider!

mihcal1, your daughter’s plan sounds good. Mine is really going back and forth at this point. Because of her dance commitments she doesn’t have a lot of other activities to show for her out-of-school time, so it seems kind of crazy to me to not use dance as a “hook” even if she doesn’t end up majoring in it.

Congrats STEMfamilly! That’s a wonderful achievement for your S and it’s even sweeter because he handled the disappointment of last year with grace.

Congrats STEM you must be very proud!! I am looking forward to this break and to my daughter coming home. Thanksgiving can’t be here soon enough. This time of the year goes by quickly… But after Jan. 1 it just drags…

I love being in town and seeing all the kids home from college!!
