Parents of the HS Class of 2015

twogirls, it’s Sally22 with a D at UGeorgia. I can help with questions on some Ohio schools, though. ;)

Oops it’s hard to keep up with who said what!!! Thx!!
Sally22 I will be back with questions. In the meantime r there kids at UG from OOS?

Not gone yet, D has class until 12:30 so we will leave ASAP after that.

A little snow on the ground and falling here, nothing major, but the weather map of our route is NOT pretty :frowning: I was hoping to have D drive some of this, to give me a break, but if it’s wintry mix stuff, I guess I’ll do it all. Will check in tomorrow, we are scheduled for the two college visits in 60 degrees and rain in NYC!

Twogirls , I think I read somewhere 15% are OOS. In D1’s scholarship program half the kids are OOS. UGA stats are continually rising. This years just released ED stats were a 30 ACT/ 2000 SAT and almost 4.0 GPA ( weighted to UGA scale). The HOPE scholarship in GA has resulted in many smart GA kids staying instate and attending UGA or GT. Hard to beat a $15K COA.

Good luck OHmom and safe travels everyone! We are scheduled to fly out tomorrow and I have my doubts about that happening. It will be a miracle if we all end up at the appointed spot by T-day.

@twogirls, I agree with others regarding Case Western. I know the average merit award last year was between $18 & $22K per year for students with decent stats. The school is VERY strong in the sciences & has a 4+4 med school program for top students. I think it would be a good fit your D with her aspirations.

Thanks for your concern everyone. We are getting some weather coming our way but the One Direction show for Good Morning American was dry. Very very cold, but dry, thankfully! If any of you have kids who taped the show, our girls got on TV at the 49:57 mark right after the commercial saying “we love you One Direction.” They are so excited they were on TV!!

We don’t have to travel anywhere but one town over to my in-laws for Thanksgiving. Although I just found out S1 has 7:30 a.m. basketball practice tomorrow and also volleyball practice at 7:30 p.m. Ugh. D will have a date with her ACT book after she gets sleep after her all-nighter.

Safe travels everyone. And enjoy your older kids who are home for the holiday :)

Sally you certainly can’t beat that price!! If mine chooses to apply she would need merit to attend. I am thinking that UG will be on the initial list.
BHM thanks for the info. Sounds like it might be a good one to add to " the list."
Keep me glad you stayed dry and had fun.

I now need to check in with D12 and see how the trip is going…

Good wishes for safe travels to all who are on the road!

And you know you are score obsessed when…I know now how bad my obsession is! The mail carrier just arrived and I saw letters from 4-5 colleges, some of which I’ve heard are nice but none of them too selective. So I’m thinking "OMG they know D’s Oct PSAT score and it’s not competitive…that’s why we’re getting mail from these schools :frowning: "

Of course I know that it’s just mail and has no real connection to any actual scores, but there’s a crazy irrational voice telling me I need to worry. Please tell me I’m not alone?

Safe travels everyone! @keepme, my D taped GMA this morning. I’ll look for the girls.

Crepes that is so funny because we are getting the exact same mail from " regular" colleges and I was thinking the same!! I noticed that she also keeps getting emails from these schools and on the bottom it says something like " national organization of college blah blah blah" so I assume she signed on to something - I went on this organizations web site and it lists member schools. I guess this is where the emails are coming from. But I thought the same thing- oh oh they know her scores.

crepes, the mail has really fallen off here, but I’m not tying that to PSAT scores - yet! However, I know that I am college test obsessed when I read a sign at my younger D’s school that says, “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” - and I immediately just see “ACT” as in the test and start to wonder why the middle school has a sign about the ACT.

3g3c, fingers crossed for your travels.

Somebody on the SAT forum said that the December SAT will likely be a recycled test. How does this person know? Is this common knowledge?

Someone posted here that the PSAT result ranges aren’t released until they are released to the students, so sometime in January. I hope that’s true because D hasn’t received a single piece of mail! She did well enough on her SATs that it should generate * something * so I have to believe that there’s a lag. (I hope?)

Twogirls, are they talking about the international test? I read that those are always recycled tests. I don’t know anything about the U.S. test.

I hope we’re done with test obsession for unless BHG decides she really wants to apply to the reach/HMFR schools on her list where her composite is within the 75th% range, but not the highest score in that range at one school. At the other school, her ACT is just one point below the lowest composite in the 75th% range .

BHG wants to retest for these two reach/HMFR schools–roll eyes. I’m not sure I can endure the Dr. Jekyll vs. Mr. Hyde syndrome BHG goes through while waiting for ACT scores. Her current score is good enough. (whining mother with lip poked out)

Yes I think they may be talking about international tests.
BHM which ACT will BHG take?

I’m pretty sure that the October PSAT isn’t affecting the college mail solicitations. Last year we started getting tons of college mail in January and hadn’t seen any prior to that. I share the paranoia however. Last year D’s PSAT score easily would have made the cutoff if she had only been a Junior. Ironic since she didn’t want to take it and did not prepare at all. Her school required it, so she went through with it complaining all the way. This year she does care, so hopefully the extra pressure does not change the result. We’ll see…within a few weeks I guess. I’m hoping that her score will not be close to the historical cutoff as 9 months seems like a long time to worry about it :). Definitive sounds good to me.

Safe travels to all, and enjoy the break, family and Thanksgiving feasts.

My older kid ( 2012) got her results mailed home on January 23. The college mailings that my D15 got are from a weird combination of schools. They are asking her to take a " quiz" - they are all saying the same thing. The same schools are sending emails from some sort of National Organization …

I doubt they are sending them based on her PSAT scores. Today we got 4 and yesterday 6.

My D12 just walked in. Here it is raining but she said that the roads coming home from up North " were a little icy." Of course now she is making plans to go to dinner with her friends and she will be zooming out the door shortly.

My kids are very different LOL.
