I hope that everybody enjoyed Thanksgiving. We went to my SIL and she is an outstanding cook- and loves to do it. The college talk was not nearly as bad as I anticipated so I did not have to " smile and nod."

My daughter is getting very stressed because she took yesterday off- ugh. We are visiting my parents today and she is bringing all of her books with her.

We took Wake Forest off the visit list for February ( don’t know much about the school-) and added UNC-CH. I realize that UNC-CH is EXTREMELY competitive as an OOS but my daughter wants to do it and wants to fill out all of the scholarship info. Naviance places her GPA clearly in the green zone so now we just need to see her test scores. As long as she has a few safeties on her list then applying to some lottery schools is fine with me.

OHMom I am sorry if you already said this but how did you like NYU ( I believe that was the second school)? It’s a great school but I am curious how your D liked the area. Great feel but clearly not for everyone.

I told my SIL that we are visiting Richmond and she asked why. I could not really give her an answer except to say that I heard it’s a great school and we will be in Virginia so we may as well check it out.

3girls I hope that you are able to decide on the SAT re-take without too much stress. It’s a tough call.

UNC-CH is a beautiful campus. It is a great college town too but you are correct in how hard it is to get in , and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the OOS acceptances. My d13 was rejected with a near perfect ACT and a 4.5 GPA (top 5 in her class of a hs that you had to test into). Lots of EC’s too. The good news is she had decided she didn’t really want to go there by the time she got the rejection. But it was her “dream” school her junior year.

We have a family member currently there and that seems to be what influenced her. UNC CH is very competitive OOS but so far every year they seem to take at least one kid from our school so I suppose it’s worth a shot as long as she stays realistic. So far my daughter does not have a " dream" school and I would like to keep it that way LOL.

It was actually NYU-Poly in Brooklyn which is NYU’s engineering school. Separate application and campus though they can use all the NYU facilities in Manhattan and take classes there if they want to. She liked it but felt the campus was small…you’ll have that when it’s 99% vertical She said she’d probably apply.

We haven’t officially visited NYU but walked through several times. She’d like it a lot, urban is her thing, but the bad financial aid reputation means its probably not going to be a contender. We’ll see. At the engineering school she gets a bump for being female…they’re 70-30 M-F and looking to have more women so that may help aid-wise.

I find myself getting very stressed from these tests but I don’t want to show it in front of my D. She is very much ready so I really want it to just be done. I really can’t take it anymore!!!

Checking in to say I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and is having a Happy Chanukah! I’m still in NYC and the Christmas lights are starting to go up on the terrace railings of the apartments I can see from here. Things are very festive.

D chose the Jan SAT because it has the answer service…it’s her first time and I think if there will be a second that will be a good tool to use for the next. I hope there’s no need to do the ACT again but who knows.

Have been talking to the extended family about college and getting in and financial aid and such, CC makes me feel so well informed :)

Does the ACT also have certain dates that give you more feedback on what you missed? I need to get D to sign up for it. I think the Feb date looks like it would work for her. Then MAYbe March for retaking the SAT, if she decides to. I think she probably should. I know there has been some discussion about that, but it seems like it can really only help you to have more scores to be able to superscore…I will read more about it.

Hi. I am not sure I’ve posted here before, but wanted to get started. We made our first college visit with S HS class 2015 the Wed. before thanksgiving. It could have been a disaster, but it turned out great.
First we had to leave our house by 5:30 am to make the last tour at 10 am. S drives which stresses the whole family out. Lots of screams of “slow down” from both parents and “don’t yell at me” from S. It rains and the temperature drops too. I picked the school, Elon and S is just humoring me to visit. We get there and I can’t even get him to look at the brochures in the admissions office while we’re waiting.
In the middle of the presentation when they hit the 72% of students travel abroad S goes “I like that”. We tour in the wind and drizzling rain. They have a student tour guide even though there are no classes for the holiday. She is great! I can sense S get more into it as we go along. Halfway through the tour he is asking questions. At the end of the tour he takes all the brochures and has a long conversation with the tour guide. Then he wants to go buy a sweatshirt!
So we had a lot of fun, learned a lot and he and I and my husband all really liked Elon. I’m glad we got the visit in. I am planning more visits over spring break, but there are only so many schools we can get to in a week.

Welcome multiplemom!!! Glad to have you!!
My daughter is also signed up for the Jan SAT and Feb ACT. If she takes it again she wants to do it right away while she is in the groove. Worst case is I can always change it to June and she can take the subject test for an extra fee. I just wanted to make sure she was not closed out.

Enjoy the third night of Hanukkah and the start of the Christmas season!!

I am just not great at navigating college websites! Argh, so if any of you who ARE good at it want to find this info for me, that would be great. ;-)

I am trying to find out if schools currently on our list superscore the SAT and/ or the ACT and if you have to send all the scores…and then, if that means they consider all the scores.

I found it for some schools, but can’t find definitive info for:
Agnes Scott (says you send all scores, but that is all I can find)
Furman
New College of Florida
Rollins College
U Miami
Smith College (far away, but seems so awesome!)

I have found posts other sources on some of these schools, but I want to be sure I am getting the info from a reliable source. I 'm now stressing a bit about D having taken the SAT once without studying. She did well, but, could probably improve in at least 2 of the sections. I think I had gotten the impression that pretty much everyone superscored the SAT (and that more and more schools are superscoring the ACT), but I guess I hadn’t actually researched it.

Welcome multiplemom! We toured Elon this past summer. I really liked it, but D crossed it off her list. I was suprised she did though. I think it was just one of those ‘feel’ things, not any specific issue. The student tour guide we had was also very good, very personable, and took our little group to see a couple places that I don’t think were on the official tour.
Are you looking for schools in the Southeast? We are in Florida, and I’d like D to stay within about 5-6 hours drive.

Welcome MultipleMom! Loved reading your visit description. Your writing is fun to read. I’m glad it all turned out well. I don’t have any multiples but am on my 3rd of 6 children to go through this process. My S15 is one semester in to a two yr IB diploma program at an international boarding school in the UK and probably won’t get to visit many schools but that doesn’t stop me from making lists for him to consider!

I can’t answer the ACT question but my impression is that while the number of schools superscoring the ACT is increasing, that number is still small. As to the SAT, I haven’t come across a school yet that doesn’t superscore but I have found schools that require that all scores be submitted. Before I looked at the document I reference below, I would have said that it is only the more selective schools that require all scores, but I was surprised to see the CUNYs, nursing colleges, and small bible colleges also requiring all scores.

I pulled up a document I had saved off the CB site. It is 53 pages, so too long to copy and paste here so I just looked up the schools. Cannot locate Agnes Scott. Does it have another name?

All the other schools has this version of score choice for SAT (pasted below).

Highest Section Scores Across Test Dates — Version 2 (Highest M, CR, W)
<university x=""> has indicated that it considers your highest section scores across all SAT test dates that you submit. Only your highest section scores will be considered as part of the final admissions decision. Each time you submit scores, <university x=""> will update your record with any new high scores.
<university x=""> strongly encourages you to submit your scores each time you take the SAT. Sending your scores each time you take the SAT can benefit you by allowing <university x=""> to consider you for all available enrollment-related opportunities.</university></university></university></university>

Agnes Scott

Furman—Highest Section - Version 2

New College of Florida–Highest Section - Version 2

Rollins College–Highest Section - Version 2

Maxwell—I agree with MDmom that 300 points is a very unusual deviation. Is your D using the Blue Book? My son’s scores would range perhaps 20-50 points on each section, but one would go up and the other would go down, netting out close to the same point. His actual test score was very close to his practice test scores. If she is still seeing this much variation, it may be too soon to test.

For UMiami, they say on admission instructions to send all scores from all tests, but not how these are considered. They have a place on admission instruction page where you can ask UM database your questions. I asked about superscoring tests, and this is response:

SAT vs. ACT
We will accept the scores from both the ACT and the SAT and have no preference as to which one you should submit. The Admission Committee will consider all official test scores from multiple test dates. We will use the highest composite score from among each test that you’ve taken. This is called Superscoring. There is no limit to the number of test scores you may submit to us for your application. For both tests, we will not incorporate the new writing section when reviewing applications.

If you ask me, they give a badly worded description of superscoring, if that is indeed what they are saying. Not very clear.

When I went to the Furman University web site I found that it is a test optional school and it looks like both the SAT and ACT are super scored.

Maxwell when my daughter started her SAT prep back in late August/early Sept I found that her CR and writing scores went up steadily as she practiced more, but her math scores went up and down like a roller coaster. She would get a high score one week only for it to go down 100 points the next week. This went on for about 6 or 7 weeks until finally the score started to settle down. She has been getting a stable score on the math now for the past 4 tests and now on all three sections her scores pretty much stay about the same. Her ACT scores have gone up with continued practice- and that’s really all it is- practice. They have stabilized as well to a level that we are happy with.
