Parents of the HS Class of 2015

I saw that a few days ago, but decided not to post about it. Everyone was so excited about SAT and ACT, didn’t want to add to the frenzy. I think someone said here awhile back, that though the scores will be online you need some kind of access code the school provides to be able to look at them. Anyone else remember this?

D received her score from school last year on Monday, Dec. 17th. My guess is that her score will arrive this week to her school (dec 2-6) and they will prepare them to go out by Dec 11th so that we get them on Dec. 16th.

yes, you need an access code. The code is located on the score report to give you a break down of the test questions. I don’t know how you would get the access code without the score report.

Sha in the past it allowed us to put in the access code ( we did not have one) but now it seems as though it is no longer an option and it says to check back in a few days and we can view the score on line. I am not sure if it will work but I guess it’s worth a try. I am wondering if I should let my D do it first (?). If they still require an access code then we won’t be able to get the score. We got my older D’s at the end of January.

My son’s HS will receive PSAT exam results sometime this week and will distribute them Thursday, December 12th.

Good luck to everyone!

shacherry, I don’t see what you are describing when we log in. Did your child take the PSAT already last year?

I did the PSAT score search and then clicked on My College Quickstart for PSAT. Then it asks for your PSAT info and Access Code. Under the submit key there is a link that says Click here to connect without a code. Then all you have to do is fill in the address of the location of your test. I messed up and spelled the town wrong 2 times many.

My son did take it last year. But I see nothing from the last year score.

I clicked that and it asks for mailing info for the school location.

Sha we do not have that option. We used to have the option to " click here to connect without an access code" but that option is no longer available. When it was available we were not able to type in the school where we took the test- we were only able to type in our account info and that took us to " we need your access code to get your scores."

How strange is it that these links are different for all of us. I wonder if I did not mess up the spelling if I would have gotten his score.

I just googled " collegeboard quick start" and it has two options: the first one lets you log in with your access code and the second lets you log in with your user name and password. There is no option to log in with your test center or school. Once I log in it says “welcome + name” and proceeds to state that we should check back in a few days for scores. I wonder if the scores will be posted?

It’s official, BHG is DONE with the college search portion of the admissions process. She told her father and me a few moments ago that there are no other schools she wishes to consider or visit. Most of her schools are safeties and matches based on CURRENT gpa and test scores. Even if BHG’s GPA increases significantly based on all As from here through first semester senior year, she would still pick the same schools on her current list. Reaches are reaches and treated as such.

She’ll take the required ACT for free in April with the rest of the 9th-11th graders at her school, but I also paid for the June test date in case she does not hit her magical 33 composite at the April sitting.

I’m kind of sad, as there are a few more schools I wished for BHG to see, sigh.

So, I’m now moving forward with making visit plans. We’ll see the two southern schools in February while taking a break from the MN winter–grin, and will book flights in the next few days for a 4-day weekend to explore the city and one other school; the NY, MA & mid-Atlantic schools during spring break, and revisits to the schools within the midwest during long weekends beginning in January through MEA week next October.

Next to do item on my list is to calculate the cost of applying to all the schools on BHG’s list, including sending test scores. I hate surprises. After figuring out how much applying is going to cost, I need to make a calendar of due dates for EA, Merit, RD, and FAFSA due dates for FAFSA only schools where BHG may qualify for aid since I am divorced and not residing with my Ex-H.

The Common Application essay topics should be released early February 2015 and that will be BHG’s new focus along with keeping grades up and studying for the February Chemistry SAT II and April ACT. We found a neat college essay writing book that she’s working through right now. [Write Out Loud: Use the Story To College Method, Write Great Application Essays, and Get into Your Top Choice College: Carol Barash: 9780071828284: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071828281/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

BHG already knows which teachers she plans to ask for LORs in May as she’s had one since 9th grade, another since 10th grade, and her new favorite since this fall although she was her advisor last year. They know her well and she has an excellent relationship with them all. It does not hurt that BHG always had As or A+ grades in their classes–wink.

Do you mean the essay prompts come out in February 2014 ( not 2015)? Do you think they will change again since this last common app? The essay prompts are still new. My kid already has her essay topic for the common app and will work on it this summer. We can begin the application process for common app schools on August 1. Non CA schools can probably begin sooner. I think she picked out two teachers to write LOR and she will ask them in the spring. So far all but two schools are on the common app.

Good for your daughter BHM!! Sounds like she knows what she wants- that’s great. After the spring break I think we will have our list organized- about 14 schools.

Right now I am looking forward to getting through these tests so that I have more data to work with.

Twogirls, The CA essay prompts are released every year by mid February for the up and coming application cycle. So, the CA essay prompts for 2014-2015 (our Kid’s application cycle) will be released by mid-February of 2014. 2015 was a typo.

Correction to my post #7111 above: Should read January Chemistry SAT II, not February. I have February stuck on the brain today.

I figured it was a typo LOL- I did not realize that the essay prompts came out in February. I thought they came out on August 1 with the common app. Do we think they will change the prompts from last year? My older one graduated in 2012 and I believe the common app essays were the same for a few years until the new CA came out. They got rid of the " write whatever you want" prompt. You can google to find out the current prompts. I keep them on my phone, although I am not sure why…

They really just want you to tell a story so that they can learn about who you are and what makes you - you.

I have the prompts all the way back to 2009–lol. The book I mentioned provides fun writing exercises to help applicants tell their story for the CA and college supplemental essay questions. Once a student completes the workbook, they have a tome of experiences to use for different types of application essay prompts. I wish such a book was around when my eldest was applying–it would have saved us a ton of money from hiring a writing coach, as he is a just the facts type of writer and very private.

That sounds like a great book BHM. With my older one I sat outside with her one day and asked her to write about different things she has done over the years - nothing big- it could have been a new food that she tried or a roller coaster that she went on. After writing a few pages her topic naturally evolved and it told the perfect story about who she is and what her personality is like.

My D15 already picked her topic and it is actually very simple, yet it also tells a story about her. I forgot which prompt it is for- I have to look at my phone!!

Assuming the prompts stay the same, she will be describing a place where she is perfectly content and why is that meaningful to her. If the prompts change she will tweak the story to fit the new prompt.

Happy Holidays to all. We’re just back from the USA National Field Hockey Festival - 4,000 girls playing field hockey form3 days while being scrutinized by colleges coaches for the potential of being recruited to play at the next level. What a blast!

DD’s team did well - 4-1-1 but didn’t win their bracket or a medal. Her team had lots of coaches come by to see them play…" Dad the Harvard coach watched the 1 st half; the Stanford coach was talking to our coach" - experiences that we’ll all remember.

Any follow up emails from coaches expressing interest in Anynof all of DD’s team mates should flow in over the next week or so.

DD is now back to the her real world 8 hours of homework today to be day for school in the morning & practice for the ACT on 12/14. She’ll retest for the ACTbin April as the February date is a conflict with the big field hockey recruiting weekend at ESPN Disney.

twogirls, when I searched for “PSAT scores” on the collegeboard site, this is what I got: “Looking for your latest scores? Give us your email address and we will let you know as soon as they are ready.”

Also according to my post on this thread last year, D’s PSAT scores came to us in the mail from her school on Dec. 13.

bunheadmom, I think D has only 2 or 3 firm choices so I’m impressed at your D being done with the selection process! And thanks for the book link, it definitely looks interesting.

Threesdad, sounds like the festival was quite an event–hard to get back into the real world after that!

Everyone here is ahead of us. AFAIK my son has zero college choices, firm or mushy. He isn’t thinking yet about these things and it’s no good my trying to get him in the mood for it. Don’t think I haven’t tried. The trauma of getting him to settle on subject tests gave me headaches for a week. I’m waiting until spring to bother him about colleges again. If it all comes over him sooner, I’ll be pleasantly amazed.

Hope everyone had a good long weekend. However you define good.
