Parents of the HS Class of 2015

For the ones who are not too happy with their scores is it possible to prep for SAT/ACT over summer (when the kids have a lot more free time) and take it one last time in Oct./Sep.? The scores will be released in three weeks and in time for most schools…including ED or EA.

I was told that kids tend to do better in the fall of senior year so taking it then is probably a good idea for some.

Hi all, I posted a couple of months ago asking for advice for my D2015 whose practice test scores were disproportionately low in math compared to CR and W. Happy to report that I took the advice to hire a tutor to work on the math. She got her SAT scores back today and saw a huge improvement in her math score. Unfortunately, I can’t remember who recommended the tutor (3girls? two girls?), but thank you! We may be one and done here (unless the tutor talks D into taking it a second time).

The SAT will be given on October 11 and that should be early enough for most ED and EA deadlines.

Hey I edited my post and then after I posted saw the additional comments! She’ll live-and again let me say how happy I am for those who did well-and for those who didn’t I can commiserate!

Pepper I’m sorry. But it’s not the end of the world. take it again I’m sure she’ll do well. Things happen. I’ve heard many stories that prove 2nd is the charm.

I think the thing to remember is that all of these exams are a snapshot of a single morning in a kid’s life. Sometimes they rise to the occasion, and sometimes they don’t. The test score is only one part of the record, and it can be taken again, as annoying as that is. A single morning does not make up all of who your kid is.

Guidance told us that these tests are a snapshot in time and schools realize this. He said most schools are starting to view GPA much more than the test scores.

Congratulations, KSMom, 3girls, twogirls, and Maxwell! Maxwell, 800 is awesome! We are done with SAT here and won’t even attempt ACT. Guess I’ll sell my book. Anything over 2200 for this kid is well good enough, believe me.

Pepper, I am sorry it didn’t go the way you wanted… I will say I attribute my son’s over 700 score to a study technique my oldest recommended. He said just do the last 9-10 problems of each math section in the blue book since those are the hardest. Then, the problems that he didn’t get right (usually 1-3), he would go over with his brother or his friend who’s super math gifted. He didn’t do any prep for CR, but I would guess a student could just do something similar.

My oldest son was as incredulous as I was that my 2015er, so handicapped in a lot of ways, did as well as he did.

Now we need to figure out study methods for the SAT II tests since he hasn’t taken any. He’ll probably take Math I and Literature in June and then Physics in the fall, unless he decides to study pre-calculus in the summer and take Math II in the fall.

Math is so hard for him. He was registered for 10 units at the community college, physics (trig based) and pre-calc, but he dropped pre-calc and is now taking 3D Animation, which really suites him.

I have a feeling he’ll move away from this idea of engineering and go towards something like animation, game design or industrial design. Who knows…

Does anyone have kids involved in FTC who are in So Cal?

Yeah for those who did well and hugs to those who didn’t. We are in the hugs department.
She won’t be doing the SAT again.

Pepper how is your DD doing in school–I ask because she may still have some repercussion from the concussion? If I remember right ?
My daughter missed 5 weeks at the end of the last school year --she still complains about sometimes she can’t focus.?
She is doing well in her classes but standardize test may be a problem this year.

It may have been to soon for your DD; especially if she was dealing with midterms and catching up.
The brain has a way of telling us if its being stretch to far–my concussion specialist, says it is the hardest for smart kids to deal with because they know when they aren’t at the top their game; causing them more internal stress that we don’t see on the outside.

Every student finds their next 4 year home!!!

I will repeat my mantra: They bloom where they are planted. Because we (parents) are good gardeners, we tend our seeds and we watch them bloom. You may have guess that I from farm land USA.
Last post for the week we are on a stress free mini vacation this weekend.

Congrats to all those happy with their SAT scores and commiseration to those who aren’t. I guess I could say we are happy with half the score? D knocked the verbal out of the park but as expected her math is waaaaay below, with writing in between. So I know she will do it at least one more time. It’s up to her whether it will be May or October. Of course my little cup is half empty kid is focusing on her math score while I am just thrilled about her verbal score. I guess we balance each other out. But the good thing is she can just target math, work steadily on it and see improvement. She already improved from her PSAT.

Extra hugs to those getting over concussions.

As D’s camping trip was cancelled I am half-thinking we might do a college visit or two. But right now we are snowed in!

My neighbor is stuck in the middle of the street with her car. It won’t move in this snow. I am not quite sure why she went out today but I am hoping they manage to move the car before the plows come out again. :open_mouth:

LeftofPisa congrats on the great verbal score!

Congrats to those who are done with their testing, and hugs to those whose kids weren’t so happy.

Congrats to all of those happy with their testing and hugs to kids who weren’t. We are two and done, not super happy or unhappy. Could have been better, but could have been a lot worse. He has broken 700 in both reading and writing now, but for some reason can’t do well with writing which he is actually strong in and only thing he studied for this time.

Looks like it was a blessing we didn’t make it to Iowa since I got an e-mail cancelling Monday’s flights home. I wish I could limit the search to close schools and schools served by Southwest, but he seems to have a liking for LACs in cornfields.

Will have to decide if he wants to take SAT 2s. Only one school on his list requires them (not good on ACTs so not an option) but his SATs are only in the 50% for that school so …

Has anybody ever taken the SAT 11 in physics? Right now she is only signed up for Spanish but she may take physics. I don’t want to sign her up now in case she changes her mind and skips it- been there, done that with lit and don’t want to waste my money again. If she stays for physics CB will bill me and I will sit in the parking lot for an extra hour waiting. :-w

My D is getting dressed to go play out in the snow with the girl down the street. Back to being a kid!! :">

@anxiousma–it absolutely is possible for students to prep during the summer. My son took SAT fall of Jr year and then again Oct of Sr year and saw a 100 point improvement, and a slightly higher super-scored improvement. He just worked through a book and more practice tests. Fall testing does impinge on essay writing and any on-campus interviews, but it does still leave plenty of time to fill out CA and submit scores to schools for Nov 1st deadlines.

I agree, CT. Just getting older and having more experience with the SAT can work in a student’s favor. My son took SAT in June of soph. year and then last month and jumped his score by 140. I believe just becoming more familiar with the test helps.

For all you who live in snow country, I’ll give you some of our 75 degree weather if we can have some of your precipitation!

Sbjdorlo: I’ll FedEx/dry ice ship you some of the 12" of snow I just finished shoveling off my walk & driveway…that’s about an inch of rain when it’s done melting. Yep, another snow day here in the lovely northeast.

The writing component of D’s ACT test came back on Tuesday - she was flabbergasted how well she did considering she said “my essay was cr@p”. Something goes correctly every so often.

Threesdad do you mean the December ACT writing just came back this week? Wow. My D got her writing section back one week after getting the composite. I think it was January 6th.

D did well on the SAT, just about what her PSAT predicted, but she is 30 points shy of guaranteed merit at a few schools on her list, so she will retake. Unless the ACT comes back with that minimum, we’ll see.
