Parents of the HS Class of 2015

Two girls: Correct the December ACT, which she took on 1/11 due to test cancellation as a result of weather.

Ok - my D also took the test during horrible weather in NY but it was not cancelled. Glad she did well! Congrats to your D OHMom!

Late reporting here… Add D to “retake” column. Her first SAT score was OK but didn’t get to where she needed to get to. So, she will retake.

Congrats to all the “one-and-done” and “done” kids out there! Good job.

I don’t know that I have seen guaranteed merit, other than for NMF. I thought merit was generally competitive, but sometimes I can’t tell on the websites. It will describe a merit scholarship but not specify.

Congrats to those who are now done with testing!! D just signed up to take the ACT. I am hoping she will decide to study for it. Her SAT scores were pretty good, but could be improved upon, I think. She has really started to get interested in this college search thing lately and a couple of the schools she likes are pretty selective. I am not sure she and her local friends fully grasp that having scores/gpas that are in the range of a school doesn’t mean they will get in, so I’m not sure they feel like there is any real reason to study and retake. I am hoping that she will keep researching and discover on her own that it would probably be beneficial.
One school she really likes requires either SAT subject tests OR the ACT with writing, so she wants to do the ACT. Now I am reading that the math is especially high level on the ACT though, so that may work against her.

Congrats to all the “one and done” SAT takers!! So jealous…hoping my D’s Feb ACT makes her one and done. She has no plans to take SAT.

Pepper and others who aren’t done yet, hang in there. One test doesn’t define your talented, wonderful children . Hugs to you as brighter scores are ahead.

Despite the 12+ inches of snow, D’s flight to Paris made it out tonight with one hr. delay. So relieved ^:)^
Another school delay tomorrow which may change to day off.

I have no idea how I am going to finish my Calculus syllabus with all this snow!

My school is delayed and they are letting us know at 7 am if they are closing- I suspect they will. Still waiting to hear from D’s school, but I expect at least a delay.

Eerboco glad to hear your D made it out safely. My H spent 3 hours shoveling the driveway- we have somebody who plows but he did not want to wait. Not so sure it’s safe to be out there shoveling over a foot of snow.

@shoboemom, Temple and Miami (OH) are two she likes that guarantee half or full tuition, stipends, etc for gpa+score combo. There’s a long thread of them in the FA forum.

No school again tomorrow for D. Just got the call. :-c

Sorry to hear about all the snow and school/trip cancelling… I’ll send our sunshine your way…

S2’s SAT overall score was much lower than all the practice tests he had done and was lower than what his PSAT predicted. I knew he did not feel good about the CR section afterwards. He usually did better in CR than Math. He did ok on the essay and that’s all. With all the preps he had done prior to this test, it is so hard to see him being devastated. He is registered for the March SAT but I wonder if it is really going to do any good within such a short time?

I am sad but I am glad to see so many good scores and “one-and-done” in this group. It must be a great relief! Congrats to all! For those who are disappointed today you are not alone.

S still not happy with his scores and will carry on for the next set of SAT/ACT dates. He’s touring a bunch of UK schools this spring so I hope he’ll find the time to practice. Right now he’s fighting a stomach bug and it’s taken all his energy out of him.

Muf- best of luck to your s on the next test. I am not too sure to have my s retake next month is because he really failed this one. I anticipated scores would be low but not failing (below average on cr and w) despite all the prep work. It would not do him any good mentally if he did badly again. As someone mentioned being older may benefit students’ test taking so make me wonder if he should wait after the summer. OTOH The advantage of retaking next month is that hopefully he is still familiar with the strategies. I really don’t know how to advise him at this point.

Sorry for the disappointed and/or upset kids. She has rebounded it seems and is back to her usual self which is not necessarily a good thing! We never discussed it again I was extremely well behaved!

We have school today. What a weird storm-we had pouring rain and a thunderstorm last night-I am really happy now that I went out with the snowblower and cleared the small street that my driveway is-I told hubby when he got home late last night after another long tax season day that he just had received his Valentine-he was very pleased he could drive right into the garage-that is some of the worst snow I have ever cleared it was more like white water-and the bottom of the driveway was like a four foot high wall of ice and snow and it was dreadful! I can’t really move my arms today!

Sorry about that stomach bug. It’s going around these parts too-I hope it doesn’t run through your house.

I don’t know what her plan is for the SAT. I have given her all kinds of links and info and she has not done a thing about any of it. She may prep and still not do well. I have been given the name of a person who is supposedly very good at coaching kids up for these tests-I told her last month I would be happy to send her there for the initial assessment but she didn’t take me up on the offer. It will be interesting to see what she ends up doing-I’d like to make her do what I want but I can’t!

Hoosier I am sorry about the concussion and yes I think that has definitely impacted her academics and her overall life and probably does continue to do so-I wish she would stop playing soccer but we have agreed the next one is going to be the last one until she is old enough to sign the insurance releases. There are girls on her team who have had multiple concussions-very scary.

@sunnydayfun—can he take the May or June exam instead? If his scores are low, I don’t think a few weeks of practice will help that much. I think practice is essential for the students scoring 600-700+, but some actual instruction is required if scores are below that level. I would hesitate to wait until after the summer b/c you want ‘real’ scores in hand when cobbling together his college list. A retest in October is fine, but I would try to see if he can take one in May or June and then a final shot in October.

Has he looked at the ACT? Some students prefer one over the other.

Congrats to those happy with their scores, and sorry for those not seeing what they were hoping for. So much of the testing process is random and beyond the student’s control that it can be really frustrating. If you happen to catch a sitting where a section(s) are particularly hard it can skew the whole test score.

Neither D2 nor S has shown much interest in prepping for the MME required ACT sitting for juniors coming up in early March. D2 is already set with her current score, and S is fine as well with his but could possibly bump it up a little with some prep but we’re not going to push the issue. He’s got a prep book if he wants to put the time in, but we’ve decided to let him make the decision himself. Since he’s not in a math class this year he knows the math section will be a struggle, but he could probably raise his composite slightly by improving in some of the other sections. In any case, might as well be pushing on a rope instead of trying to convince a teenager of anything. Why can’t today’s teens be as smart and level headed as we all were when we were teens? :-?

We are very happy with D’s SAT. So that’s it! It’s a great feeling to know this part is done!

Congratulations to all the other good SAT scores. Sorry to hear some are not happy with the score. Hope things get better in March or May.

@Maxwellequations, anything you can recommend for SAT math II? My d wants to take it in May.

CT1417-He was/is in a prep program that provides group lessons of 6 lessons of each CR and math. The lessons started from the end of summer to the beginning of the junior year. Then he followed up with CR and math workshops that provide more practices and strategy reviews taught in the group lessons. Additionally he has done Vocabulary labs and timed full-length practice tests. His scores have improved overtime at the prep program. What so discouraging with this SAT result is that his math score is only slightly higher and his CR score is much lower than the pre-diagnostic SAT assessment when he started the prep. I would hate to believe that he did not gain anything from the prep. He said he messed up 2 reading paragraphs during the Jan test. Will that make that much difference in the score? H and I know that he is not a good test taker (he makes careless errors) and we have discovered that he is possibly lacking of some abstract skills. In addition, he is not great in science subjects and struggled in the pre-AP/honors chem class last year. With that said, I don’t know if ACT is a good testing for him or not but it may be a possibility to consider.

Sunnydayfun why don’t you take a look at the fair test org. web site, there are alot of colleges and university that are test option free.
You may be surprise that some may already be on your list.
The Act is more straight forward in questioning its the timing that is hard for some kids. You might have him try a few practice tests and see if he likes it better.
The science part of the test really isn’t pure science it’s reading diagrams and data, and answering those type of questions.
I thought it would be on a stress free vacation---- going no where now–did I mention somewhere before that I hate SNOW uggg

Herandhis - Congratulations!! For math II, my daughter used barrons book and McGraw hill SAT II book -
http://www.amazon.com/McGraw-Hills-SAT-Subject-Test-10/dp/0071762922/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1392408655&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=sat+math+II%2C+mcgrowhill</a>
She mainly used these to do the sample tests. she had to learn a lot of stuff by herself because her school’s precalc class simply omitted those. If your D’s school does good job with pre calc, I’m sure she will do well with some preparation.

He can do an ACT practice test rather than a real one if you just want to get a sense of where he’d be.

Sending congrats to those with great scores and hugs to those who are not happy with their scores. Sunnyday ask your son to take a practice test using the red book. The biggest issue is the timing but perhaps the ACT will be a better test for him.

Happy Valentines Day!!
