Parents of the HS Class of 2015

DS just emailed an admissions rep to schedule his first college interview when the rep is in our area. I’m not sure how such an interview will go, but I’m happy to see him start the process! He looked sort of green when he hit “send” though.

For those w/DCs who’ve done this before, what would you suggest DS do to prepare, aside from reviewing the college web site - espc the areas of study that particularly interest him? I have a list of standard job interview questions that I thought he should also review. Is it appropriate to ask about merit aid at such an interview? And he should take his resume along, correct?

And now that I think about it, DS has already met w/college reps at his HS, so this probably will not be very different from that. But somehow it seems more “official.” :-S

Thank you my2sons. That’s good to know.

I have tried to catch up but I am sure I have missed things. I better jump back in before too much time passes! I hope all the 2015ers are breathing a sigh of relief at the end of Junior year. It has been a very stressful last month here with D way behind because of her concussion. But it’s a brand new day and I am proud of my rising Senior.

And welcome to all who are new here! I hope you find the support and information we all need.

@GoAskDad, my older D did a number of interviews. She is an extrovert so it was pretty easy for her. I know that a common question was what was she reading. So have him prepared to answer that one! And I think he should be prepared to talk about something he is passionate about in a concise and relatable way. You know, the elevator pitch. Good luck to him!

GoAskDad good luck!! My D has a Skype interview on Tuesday and we are going to review for it this weekend. I will have her review the website and clubs etc that interest her, be prepared to discuss books she has read, talk about why she wants to attend the school, discuss our visit, review some current events just in case, be prepared to discuss the activities she is currently involved in as well as the classes she takes, etc. I am not going to have her bring up the subject of merit, but if he asks her why she is not applying ED I will have her answer it honestly - she needs merit to attend. This is a $60,000 a year school. Good luck!!

Okay, folks. It’s Friday and I’m dragging tail feathers. I don’t know how to Zumba or yoga or any of that stuff. But I do know how to do “The Bird.” WHAT TIME IS IT?

[Morris Day and the Time – “The Bird”](http://www.myvideo.de/watch/6116123/Morris_Day_The_Time_The_Bird)

Wake up and enjoy your Friday!

S will be off to take his precalc final shortly so this afternoon he will officially be a senior! Sunday we have to drop him off at TASP and it just seems too sudden. I wish he had a little down time. He is going to miss graduation, all of the parties, and a class trip. When he gets home August 2nd it is going to be crunch time. I think he is stressed out, and I know I am. I really hope he enjoys the program-part of me thinks maybe he should have just spent the summer at home enjoying the fleeting moments of being a teen.

Planner03, boy can I relate. S had his last final yesterday. We have 1 week to get ready for his summer program, he’s gone until early August. Home 2 weeks to do the copious amounts of summer homework they give (no time to do it at the program he’s going to. We can’t even come see him except on 2 specific invited visits that are just 3 hours long), Marching band camp and then bam! school starts. When was he writing these apps and settling into his last summer as a high school student? I tried to talk him out of marching band for senior year, but he insists that its important for the apps and that the band needs him. Oh well, I tried.

We have our HS graduation tonight. So many friends finishing up their high school careers. I can’t believe that will be us next year.

Okay, its Friday. And school is finally out. That means celebration yoga on the Lido Deck followed by free flowing frozen drinks and a beautiful moonlit sky. Hope to see everyone there! I hope SOG won’t mind picking the music.

@twogirls and @GoAskDad could you tell me about what scheduling interviews. So the college reps are taking interviews without formal college applications in their hands? I didn’t know they did this. DS has not contacted anyone yet. Are the college reps pretty responsive?

OMG @SomeOldGuy, I haven’t heard or thought of that song in decades. Excellent start to the last day of a very looooong week.

Joe2015 my D received an email from a school that she visited ( and remains on the list) requesting that she set up an interview in person or by skype.

Help - I can no longer see any posts on this thread after June 17 - what gives? Anyone else?

I guess it’s finally here…

<a href=“R.E.M. - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) - YouTube”>R.E.M. - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) - YouTube;

Is anybody else having a CC issue? The last page brings me to June 17th and today’s posts are not there.

Testing. CC appears to have a problem (?)

What the…!!! June 17th? It’s Tuesday again?

I am just posting to see what happens. I can’t see any posts after June 17. Weird!

Anybody else having an issue with the parent forum?

Hi guys, it’s been a little while :)

D’s been out of school since the end of May so summer is well underway. On June 6th we left Ohio for NYC where I had a high school reunion and she visited with her dad and family. We then did several college visits. I’ll do a report in separate posts.

On the way we stopped in at ALBRIGHT COLLEGE in Reading, PA. This is a potential “good bet” school that is unique in guaranteeing to meet full need based on FAFSA only. For us, this is sort of a big deal as her dad is not exactly on top of his life financially and whether he will get it together enough to do his non-custodial parent paperwork next fall is an open question.

We self-toured as we arrived around 5PM on a Friday. The campus is lovely and the town was a surprise - thriving, hopping downtown with cafes and art and people out and about enjoying the evening. Very diverse economically and ethnically. It remains on the list though if it becomes a serious contender she will visit properly - do an overnight, a class, etc.

Monday morning we visited AMHERST COLLEGE. Amherst is obviously a reach but it has the open curriculum she loves, it is a fine example of a New England rural school that is in a remote area yet a pretty hopping college town, and it is pretty into recruiting lower income/first gen kids. We had a private tour, just luck. We were able to see in many buildings and even a functioning dining hall as many students were on campus doing scientific research, which seems to be a bit of thing there. The info session was fairly typical, a lot of emphasis on undergrad focus, small student teacher ration, etc. D had been dead set against a rural school but surprisingly, she very much liked Amherst. So it’s still on the list as well.
