Wishing happy and good thoughts to those who will receive ACT scores today. Fingers and toes cross that everyone receive happy dance scores.

I think DC#2 is fairly narrow-tracked on eight apps at this point, and judging from the last few posts he may be the only kid from this group in the application pool at one of them.

Trying to get caught up here. We are visiting U of SC in July so I’ll be interested in your report. We’ll also visit UGA while in that region. It looks like we’ve got a list of 5 right now and will have visited all of them. I think I may insist on an additional 1 or 2 for good measure. Only one school is a true safety so I want her to have options.

On the job front, my husband and I have debated the worth of a four yr degree many times. He works in HR and they have several positions in which it makes no difference if the person has a two yr or four yr degree and, in some cases, they prefer a two yr degree applicant because he says four yr degree people tend to leave jobs more quickly. These positions are not chemical engineers, but they are surprising to me–computer programmers, accountants, and electrical engineers. He realizes the value of four yr and professional degrees for some professions but insists that there are others where it’s not needed and companies don’t insist on them. I’m still in the four yr degree camp though. I have to wonder about future employment many years down the road.

I agree with the comment that while some kids may be ready for the daily work grind at 20 yrs old, many kids still need the maturity.

D didn’t feel the love for Duke either. One of her friends love it and will apply ED.

Very frustrated here. ACT scores are posting, but no score posted yet for DS. I don’t really know why I’m stressing because he said he’s certain that he did not do as well as he did in Feb…and his Feb score is fine. Actually, I"m mainly worried that he “bombed” the test - as he claims he did - and that’s going to make him question himself as he’s also trying to focus on college apps, essays, etc. I also feel kind of bad that I encouraged him to take the test again, because he didn’t actually “need” to. Ugh.

Keep checking the site as they have been updating it throughout the day. We got D’s score from the last test on the second day. So happy to say that this time around she broke her unlucky streak and scored 4 pts higher! What an ego boost for her. She wants to retake it in Sept to get extra math points so that’s the plan.

@jennie11 <:-P I have sent wishes to the stars at night for your D!!!
My D scores aren’t back but I am not going to panic because it doesn’t change the outcome.

Hey everyone the mail has gone crazy again b-( Not just brochure but old fashion paper applications ( what’s up with that?). I’m just about tired of the junk mail for her and now my S is starting grrrrreat.

@Jennie11, hoorah! That’s great news and a real confidence boost to your D just at the right time!

No test scores posted here. My son said all of his friends that have their scores said they either got the same score or worse. At least he won’t feel bad if his doesn’t change or goes down! I really want him to be done though. His score is high enough to get in to his schools but not high enough for merit aid to compliment the hopeful athletic scholarship. Ugh!

Awesome jennie!

Thank you for the Tulane report. D isn’t a partier either and yet wants a vibrant city and good merit/FA…and darnit I want to take her to NOLA! Truthfully I have in mind a fall trip to include Vandy, Tulane, Bama and Emory, but she has so many schools on her list already I am not sure it’s worth the time and money to add more to the list.

Spawn & her softball co-captains drove up to Newport, RI (3.5 hrs from casa Threesdad) yesterday moring for their softball coaches wedding. Arrived safely, had a nice time, stayed overnight and came back this morning.

Hopefully she goes out for a run since field hockey season is only 7 weeks away or scracks an ACT praqctice test or does soemthing productive on her Common App Essay…I say I hope…

@Hoosier96 – thank you for all those wishes! They certainly paid off. She was so much happier today and feels like she has more options. The score is still not high enough for her #1 choice, but it’s in the right direction.

I know it has barely been 24 hours but S is unhappy at his summer program (or so the crying face cat FB stickers tell me) and I miss him and the worrying and the missing are a volatile mix…

sameoldguy if you mean Duke it is still on S’s list…if you want to call what he has a list.

jennie11 4 points is unbelievable!

Aww. D is doing day one right now, her class is in session for another hour or so. I’ve been in touch via text…would that help you?

Have any kids made progress in cleaning their rooms? I haven’t even re-claimed my dining room table yet. College D is home too and her stuff is everywhere as well. Aaarrrgghhhh!

I feel ya @GoAskDad, among my frustrations today, why does the ACT issue scores in dribs and drabs and why is D not in the first drib? This is her first since the concussion nixed the April date. And she barely did any prep. So I don’t think she will be upset one way or the other. It should give her a sense though of whether she wants to concentrate on the SAT or ACT for the fall. I am more nervous about the SAT 2s. Her list is pretty set based on current GPA and scores. Higher scores might shift whether they are reach, match or safety and how much $ she might get. But the SAT2s are required for most of her schools, unless that ACT really shines. Congrats @jennie11 on your D’s score and lots of good luck vibes to those waiting.

D’s school is a hothouse and the college talk/pressure was intense as the school year wound down. D sometimes feels inadequate because she won’t be going to a top 20. But she got a shot of reality when a friend at a different school, who is aiming high, noted that half the kids in her class probably won’t even go to college.

@jennie11, congrats on the score increase! I know your d felt discouraged right after the test , so good news indeed!
@planner03, I’m sorry your S is having a rough time. I know that sort of thing will be so hard once d is off to college. It’s hard not being with them when they are down.

D got her ACT scores. She did quite well. :-). She did best on reading and English, quite well on science, took her hit on math ( which she expected). It just seems a shame that schools generally just look at that composite score and not the individual scores, all while claiming to look at the whole person. I am just feeling frustrated with the process right now. D got a great score but then almost immediately I worry that it’s not “good enough” for what she wants. I needed to take a step back and just acknowledge how great her scores are. Great accomplishment … She deserves some kudos for that! :-).
This comes at the end of this long college tour which has left me a bit discouraged. She just really keeps coming back to loving Reach schools and I keep hoping she will fall in love ( or even a fairly strong like) with a safety.

Congratulations to the kids who are pleased with their scores today, and condolences for those who are not. I also have much sympathy for those still waiting. That would make me CRAZY.

@jennie11, I am not happy with D. Her room is a disaster, despite her promises to clean it before she leaves on vacation with her friend tomorrow. She has also failed to put any effort into winnowing her college list, let alone taken a serious crack at any essays. Mama is not pleased. [-(

My child is at camp and I don’t have the ACT password to access scores. We were told the scores would be later because of the writing section. Are you seeing scores for writing, too?

Planner I hope things get better for your S soon.

Congrats to all who are happy with their scores =D>

My D did an amazing job of cleaning up the kitchen and living room, but her room is still a disaster.

So D decided that she wants everything done by the time school begins on September 4th. This means the entire common app, non common app schools, plus all of the essays. She says once school begins she does not want any of this left to do.
That is one lofty goal that I am not convinced is achievable, but who knows. She did the common app essay over the weekend. Today she finished the Pitt app with the essay and is halfway through an activities/awards resume to be emailed in to Pitt. She is exhausting me- I am up at 5 am for work and the minute I walk in the door she wants me to review what she did and check for typos. If this is what things will be like all summer I am going to need a vacation. Now I know why she can’t do group work.

After the UPitt app she plans to call UMD-CP and NC State to make sure their app is up and running- unless the answer is obvious on the website. She has literally taken her school drive and shifted it over to the application process. It’s exhausting.

@twogirls, I was told that UMD app will be available August 1st. @FromMD, can you confirm? I didn’t see a date on the website. I’m going to UMD College Access diversity program on Saturday. Let me know if you have any questions about MD. I can ask at the conference.
