Parents of the HS Class of 2015

@twoagirls we are on the same schedule about apps. The only difference is that we start school the Middle of August.

CG want all of it done so if you need to retest or interview it takes some of the pressure off in Sept. If you need to retest app is done and then you can send it in after scores are return if you decide go ahead and apply.

I don’t need a drink at the moment but I sure could use a BINGO for the win and collect the money to pay for all of this.

I called UMD-CP today and they said to check the date on the app, but there is none (?). Then they said that it would be ok even if she filled out last years app and then they were talking and basically lost me. I think I will have D figure it out. Having a glass of wine now.

I will ask on Saturday about the MD app.

Thanks 4CookieMonster!!

Planner, so sorry to hear your son is having a rough time. Sending good vibes for better days.

Palomina, the writing scores are not posted yet, but the rest of the test scores are.

2 visits today. 1 came off the list. 1 reeaaallly impressed. And it was a surprise! went there not expecting much, and came away feeling that it might be the one!

Just a reiteration of what’s been said here before, but; tour guides and Adcom “MC’s” really do influence outcomes. The Admissions Director at our 2nd school of the day was an absolute riot (think Richard Pryor, in his “story telling glory” without the profanity) =)) he had the room eating out of the palm of his hand before we broke for tours. And the tour guides were extremely well prepared and entertaining. A++ visit for sure. more later.

<:-P received the ACT composite today from the June test <:-P That was unexpected! S is officially 1 and done Academically, he can go anywhere he wants (and that will have him) as an unhooked high stats kid from the upper middle class … financially… :-?? that’s a different question.

Hope everybody got good ACT news!

not sure where to put this - did you see this? <a href=“Northwestern's School of Journalism misspells own name on diplomas”>Northwestern's School of Journalism misspells own name on diplomas;

Congrats, @giterdone‌!! I am reveling vicariously in your good news!

@palomina, we got our essay score about a week after the multiple choice. We were one of those who waited two weeks in April for our score. I cannot fathom why the ACT does this. It is really horrible. Why not just wait two to three weeks and release them all?!? Instead of torturing people?!!

@twogirls‌ I can’t believe your D is powering through all this now. Mine is still recovering from the end of school.

D got her ACT back with a great four point improvement. And still wants to try again. Heaven help me.

She leaves for Africa on Wednesday and will be out of touch for three weeks. I’m so glad she got these before she left.

Africa and a four point increase? Wow that’s amazing!!

Yes D is plowing through these essays. Tonight she completed the essay for UNC-CH.

thank you @afg2014. I want to know the scores but I should wait until the kid returns from camp. I’m ready for AP test scores to come out, too!

@planner, sorry your S is having trouble adjusting. Give it a little time though and I bet things will be different.

@giterdone and @Afg2014, congratulations to your kids!! Giterdone, i have to laugh at the way you put it–academically he can go anywhere as an unhooked, high stats, upper middle class kid. Lol, yes. Many of us in the same boat I think.

@planner, sometimes I think the kids just need to vent a little to us and then they feel perfectly fine but we are still feeling sad for them. That could be the case for your S.

@Palomina: Everyone wants to be a columnist. Nobody wants to be a copy editor.

@Palomina: That’s awful! I graduated from the journalism school at NU. We used to get what was called a “Medill F” for even one misspelled word in an article or column.

@4CookieMonster - I don’t know the exact date of when UMD-CP app’s going up but August 1 sounds about right. Unlike Pitt, UMD doesn’t use rolling admission so as long as app is sent in by Nov 1, there’s nothing to worry about.

@twogirls - your D is pretty impressive. My D is slowly getting recharged after 2 weeks of down time. Not ready to work on apps yet.

My D stated today that she hates down time. One would think she would need to relax a little after this brutal school year, but I guess not! She is on a mission to finish everything by September 4th and I honestly think she will do it… But she may exhaust me in the process.

I bought a big binder with dividers and gave each school a section. Right now I am listing all of the requirements and due dates for each school.

SAT scores come out Thursday. Waiting for the Spanish subject test.

As a way to get d started thinking about the common app essays, I sent her this brief writeup and exploration of the prompts: <a href=“2015-16 Common Application Essay Prompts: A Guide”>http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/portfolio-items/2014-common-application-essay-prompts-a-guide-topics/</a></p>

@twogirls‌ - your d sounds amazing - go, girl!

I’m glad to hear stories of ACT score increases & good scores for first-time-test-takers.

No scores here and DS was texting me from his volunteer gig today, wanting to know his scores…and I kept checking…and there was NOTHING. DS has yet to talk w/anyone who got a score increase. All the same scores, or decreases. DS is convinced he’s in the “decrease” camp and he probably is, but it’s really not fun to wait around for scores while it seems all of his classmates know theirs. In fact, everyone he has texted or talked to has their scores as of this morning. I can’t believe this is the way it’s done. For the Feb test, DS knew his score on “Day One,” but we didn’t realize that not everyone got scores on Day One. Crazy. Just a crazy way to operate.

ACT = Absolutely Crazy Test!!

On the upside, DS already has an ACT and SAT score that will work for him, so he is done and I am REALLY DONE. Also, I try to keep reminding myself that we are (hopefully) learning lessons to apply w/our kids coming up the line. DS, being the oldest, is the Guinea Pig!

Congrats on all the great scores coming in! D took it in April, has a score good enough to get in to all of the schools on her list and some with merit. Would love another point or two to secure some extra $$$ but it is her choice if she wants to retake in the fall. Right now we are just going to concentrate on the three remaining college visits then firm up a list and start apps. She secured a job recently at our local grocery store and they have been getting her on the schedule regularly which helps with her pocketbook but puts a small dent in time for paperwork.

Cleaned the house last week and there is STILL no clutter, no clothes laying on the floor, no books or papers piled on the table, no shoes to trip over, no backpacks blocking the hallways! Older D is gone all summer (notice I did not mention her room?) and DS is at camp until July 3rd.

DS seems to be enjoying the camp at Rose Hulman. Hopefully he will get some idea about what different types of engineers do. I am also strongly in the 4 -year camp. Both DH and work as engineers and IMO, if an employer thinks someone with a 2-yr degree can do the job, then it is really a technician position and not truly an engineering position. Years of experience with a 2-yr degree could be an equalizing factor but I think there is a big difference between inexperienced or slightly experienced prospects with 2 vs 4 yr degrees.
