Parents of the HS Class of 2015

It’s not that the campuses haven’t grown and can’t accommodate the instate kids, it’s that the state budget doesn’t support the campuses. In order to keep them running, the schools accept as many international and out of state kids as they can and gaining entry to any of the top 5-6 UCs is no longer a given for a California student.

Hoosier, remember that in many states, much of state total education spending is on secondary education. In our state, at least, though secondary ed has also taken a hit, the largest cuts have been at university level. Our state is one where the flagship is looking for ways to get around the mandate to keep OOS numbers relatively low, and would like to be more like UMichigan so they actually have some money to run the place. But getting the legislature on board isn’t easy. They were hoping to get permission to have more OOS so long as the overall numbers for the whole university system balanced. That is, other campuses have fewer OOS, so they should be allowed to have more. But it hasn’t made it through the gauntlet so far.

I’m just kibitzing here from Class of '17, but your discussion led me to remember this blog post about the changes in CA higher education funding. Interesting graphs that show the shift of costs from taxes to tuition.

<a href=“Cost of college remarkably stable | Gas station without pumps”>http://gasstationwithoutpumps.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/2012/05/15/cost-of-college-remarkably-stable/</a></p>

I can’t speak to the accuracy of those figures since they are based on funding per FTE, but I note that those figures include community colleges as well as 4-year institutions. I don’t think those should be lumped together since they are separate systems, and also because the cost is so very different between them that lumping them together just confuses the results.

<a href=“State Support for Public Colleges, 2002-20”>State Support for Public Colleges, 2002-20;

Here’s an article with an interactive that shows the change in state funding as a revenue source for specific public universities. The state provides a smaller portion of the revenue for many schools. Somewhere else (different article/report) shows that actual dollar amount has also decreased.

After this conversation, I emailed D1’s college counselor to ask if she should do the automatic admit thing at UC Riverside. (They have a guaranteed admit for anyone with a UC GPA of 3.9 or above, and an SAT score of 1600 or above.) She clearly thinks I’m crazy. She thinks D1 is a shoo-in at UCSC, as well as at Lewis & Clark, Occidental, and probably a few other private schools D1 is interested in. Perhaps I am letting myself be too easily scared.

@dustypig, I apologize, I didn’t mean to make you nervous just because I’m a worrier. D’s counselor also thinks I’m crazy and doesn’t understand why I’m so pessimistic about the process.

Very busy at work the last few days, but Thank You to all who wrote about Spawn.

Yes Spawn had a very lovely anniversary of her hatching and is presently @ The Shore with her school friends for the day while FF (fantastic father) is slaving away in the salt mine.

For those who asked, she has a video she uploads to every college recruiting website she regaiters on, so they do have video or her. There is another showcase this weekend she emailed 8-9 coaches on, so we’ll see what transpires.

@3girls3cats, don’t apologize! It is definitely worrisome.

I am a late straggler to this long list, but thought to add myself and the Spawn’s info.

Spawn is playing softball this weekend in eastern PA beginning tomorrow AM. She is registered (with WW) for the 1 PM tour/info session at Lafayette College and will take the self guided tour of Lehigh as the school is closed for the Holiday. Attempting multi-tasking and making use of the trip to the area. Bucknell is also on the list but that’s just as far from where she’ll be than it is from home, per Mapquest, so that will need to be included on another trip.

We are dragging Spawn into this collegiate due diligence process irrespective of her interest or cooperation since she just doens’t know what she wants and appears to be stuck in neutral since she has her school(s) she will apply to that are at best a lottery ticket chance.of matriculation.

Good luck, Threesdad! It took a while and a few campus visits for my D1 to start knowing what she wants as well. It’s tough for them if they’re just not familiar with colleges and what’s out there. D1 had to comparison shop a bit in order to really understand the differences between schools. The real sense of what a school is like just didn’t come through on paper or on a website.

Adding D1’s major and interests to this list:

@shoboemom, is it your daughter who is interested in public health? I thought so but on the list it says cultural anthropology (another of my D’s interests). Anyway, public health is a potential interest of my D and I was poking around on the U of R website and found this and thought I would share. <a href=“Master’s of Public Health 3-2 Program : Undergraduate Programs : Undergraduate Program in Public Health : University of Rochester”>http://www.rochester.edu/college/ph/undergrad/3-2.html</a></p>

@suzy100, OK got it - thanks! Deer tick makes much more sense. That’s what I get for “scanning” the thread before posting.

@Pepper03, I hope you’re taking care of yourself. Sorry to hear about the Lyme disease :-(

DS got his June ACT scores back last Friday but I’ve been unable to post until today. Life has been rather nutty. Scores were also nutty. DS took the ACT again to improve his Math score, which he did - by ONE point, ugh. Reading went down one point. Science went down THREE points. English stayed the same. So, overall, DS’s composite dropped by 1 point. Just not great news, but I suppose it could have been worse.

Overall, DS’s Jan 2014 SAT score is still higher than his Feb ACT score, so we are going to use that SAT score and call it a day. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so at least DS gave the ACT one more try. He really, really wanted to hit a 34 (for a variety of reasons) and that is just not going to happen (especially because he’s not going to take the test again!). I don’t think his SAT is worth retaking, either. Again, Math is the culprit…he would like to get 10 points higher…but we are out of energy/out of time.

If I ever get a chance to go back over to the Parents of the HS Class of 2018 thread (my next stop on this loooooong journey to get 4 kids through college), I will be one of those advocates for “Early Testing.” Thank goodness DS took the SAT in January and the ACT in February of his Jr year. His scores gave us a baseline for college selection purposes and, as it turned out, will be the scores he uses. If he had really, truly needed an increase, then he’d have several more sittings to prepare. Even though he didn’t do as well on the June ACT, it wasn’t his first sitting and we don’t have to scramble in the Fall. So, all’s well that ends well…

@hs2015mom, thanks for the heads-up that KU’s app is open. DS isn’t home this week, but I will text him to tell him that he has something to work on when he gets home ;-)

For any families looking at KU, DH & I are grads (don’t let that scare you away!) and it’s an excellent university, though large, as universities are. I would certainly recommend a look at KU for OOS students, especially. Like other state flagships, KU has a good percentage of in-state students and I think it’s challenging for in-state kids from large districts to “break the cycle” of high school (assuming that’s what the student wants…because MANY kids are perfectly happy to keep the high school cycle going strong in college). A good percentage of DS’s HS class will attend KU (another percentage will attend K-State…which is also a great school but please don’t quote me due to the rivalry).

KU is also apparently a great cost-option (which I didn’t realize until I was researching college costs about a year ago).

DS’s HS used to send a few students to HYP/Stanford/etc each year, but I noticed this year (Class of 2014) that almost every tippy-top student is staying in-state (and attending KU). I suspect the cost of college/economy has something to do with this.

@GoAskDad, I agree on the early testing. D1 took the January SAT (after using the holidays to do prep) and then the March SAT – I think I registered her even before getting her scores. She balked at testing again when she ended up doing pretty well the first time, but I convinced her that the second sitting was a “freebie” because it can’t hurt, only help. I think I compared it to doing extra-credit homework.

Anyway, it sure was nice to be all done with the major testing by March. Original plan was for D1 to take the SAT IIs in June but she was wiped out by finals and end of year stress, so we decided to put it off till October.

@GoAskDad, sorry your son didn’t get the results he wanted but I also am with you on early testing. After my experience with my older daughter I was determined to get in younger D’s first test by January. I am so glad she did it then. With her concussion later testing in the spring became impossible. And we had a number to use developing a list. She can work this summer to take it again in the fall (was hoping it wouldn’t be necessary, but again, that concussion) and see if she can bring it up. Otherwise she has a solid score for the schools on her list.

Also, we have noticed the same trend of more top students staying in state here too.
