Parents of the HS Class of 2015

I also agree with early testing. I was struggling to figure out which month to do the testing because in the fall D has sports and in the spring she is ( was) busy with AP tests and finals. We finally decided that she would use September, October and November to prep for the December tests ( ACT and SAT) despite the fact that she was busy with sports. D made it very clear that she would not be taking these tests during AP season and wanted nothing to do with them after March 1. She took both tests in December and it turns out these were her highest scores. She also went down a point when she took the February ACT. She flat out refused to retake the SAT. D will be sending in her ACT and SAT from December and the schools can do whatever they want with them LOL.

This may have been discussed but is there also a short answer on the common app- the one about a job or EC- or did they take it a away? This question was not on last years common app and I am not sure if they brought it back.

Remember my S? “If you won’t pay to send me to an elite top 20, I’ll just apply to the flagship down the street and happily(or sulkily, not sure exactly) attend there. NOT looking at other schools. Not, not, not.” That S?

He just got off the plane in O-Hare, back from his school trip to France. Spent the whole ride back talking to a soccer loving NMF young woman who attends UKentucky on their full-ride. Told him all about the school and life in the south.

Guess who wants to apply to UKentucky now? Mr. “Ew, no, the Kentucky accent is horrible. Never.”

I figured something like this might happen. And I wanted to visit there during his spring break when university was in session. Not sure when we’ll fit in a visit now.

@twogirls, there have been conflicting posts on the common app short answer issue - several posters have been told by college counselors that there will not be a short answer EC question on the common app this year, but another poster reported that the short answer EC question was coming back this year. I’d love to know the answer too!

Thanks Daisychain. I guess we will just wait.

Celeste I am happy to hear that your son is widening his search a little even though the timing is not great. Better late than never!

Early testing for S15 was one of the smartest decisions he could have made. He took the ACT in Sept and the SAT in Oct and was done. What a relief to not have to worry about it this Spring with so much else going on.

S16 is not accelerated in math however, and our normal math sequence is Algebra II and Trig Junior year so I think it is pointless for him to try either test before May/June.

Hmmm…a young man suddenly expresses interest in a school after meeting a young woman from said school. That one is a bit of a head-scratcher. :-/

UKy is definitely a great school celeste…regardless of what might get your S looking that way.

@goaskdad, Spawn tested early, not so we had any idea, but as an athlete one needs to know which pool to swim in - Ivy, Patriot, Big D1, academic D III, DIII, etc.

A bi-product of the early testing was knowing where things stood - good or not.

@GoAskDad, I’m sorry the June ACT didn’t work out but it sounds like your S is one of those rare kids who does better on the SAT and that he did well on the SAT.

I also agree about the early testing. D took the SAT in October and could have been done but decided to retake it in January. What a relief to have that done. I didn’t see the point in taking the ACT so she skipped that bit of torture. Subject tests were split over May and June and senior year is free for all the other stuff that is sure to take up all her time.

@Celeste, that’s a great story. I guess you needed to send certain reps from various colleges his way early on ;)

Another advocate of early testing here. D first took the SAT and ACT, June of her sophomore year. In hindsight, it was too early but we came up with a great list of schools for her based on the scores.

Then she had time to improve and maybe change up the schools of she wanted.

You can put us in the early testing camp also. D2 and S both took the ACT sophomore year for a benchmark knowing that they’d have a state-mandated sitting junior year. Both improved their composite during the junior year sitting (S increased 3 points, D2 increased 1) and they were both done at that point. Since D2 was in-range for NM, she also took the SAT but was done with that in October. Only senior year AP tests on the horizon. :-bd

We initially planned to test early but LIFE got in the way…but … I am just glad D was finally able to test!
Plan for S16 SAT OCT no ACT until Spring because he’s a year behind in math sequence compared to D. He will have complete Alg 2 and Trig by spring/summer.

@leftofpisa, No my D hasn’t talked about public health…but who knows?! lol

I am feeling envious of a fb friend who is posting about her D happily applying to a local college, wanting to stay close to home. I soooo wish we could find the right fit, right price close to home, or even a more sure thing, not too far from home. :frowning: Maybe it will happen.

We also started as early testers, and are glad, but aren’t done. D took the SAT, and was scheduled to retake it in the spring, but then stuff happened…lol, We are glad that she still has the Fall to retake, and that the Fall will be a retake and not the 1st time. She didn’t take the ACT until this spring, but again, that means, if she decides to do it in the Fall, it will be the retake, not the 1st time. SO, she can stand with the scores she has now for some places, but has that opportunity to improve in the Fall. Just having that first score to work with for college researching is so helpful! I can’t imagine going all summer without that bit of data.

My D took the ACT at the end of her sophomore year and the composite was not good. English was very high, Reading was high, Math and Science were very low. Not at all prepared for that stuff. She then took SAT in Oct. and March of Junior year and it is definitely the test for her. But her Math is a real problem. She will need to start studying in August for Oct. test which will be her third and final sitting. Hopefully she can bring it up b/c CR and Writing are great, Math must come up if she is to apply to a couple of the schools on her list (like W&M). If not, thank goodness for test-optional schools.
She took 2 SATIIs last month. One score is excellent, one good but disappointing. Is the general consensus that you only submit scores of 700+ when applying to very selective schools (W&M, Smith, Kenyon, Mt. Holyoke… may even reach for Vassar)?

Honestly the PSAT will give you a very good idea of where you are at if you don’t want to take the SAT in the fall. My DD was exactly 10x it with her first SAT score in March.

For her early spring was better because of Marching Band…no time to prep then. Also I think being older and having seen Math again from the summer break helps.

Another straggler! Adding my D to the list:

I have nothing against early testing, however, both D’12 and S’15 were “one and done” on the June test (between Junior and Senior year). Kids were just not interested in the ACT during sophomore year. And the college selection process feels too long already. I wouldn’t want to make it longer :stuck_out_tongue:

@celesteroberts, that is very funny! And I’m glad your son is expanding his options.

@shoboemom, oh shoot! I hope whoever it is who does have a D interested in public health sees it. Although I suspect it isn’t new news. I didn’t realize that undergraduate public health was a thing until recently.

Does anybody else get phone calls from a college research company asking to speak to their kid? This is the third night in a row that we got these calls and I have been blowing them off. Tonight I finally questioned the guy because I was curious. He got her name from a " college list" and told me he was going to ask her a bunch of questions about her interests, school choices, etc. I told him she was busy and to please call back tomorrow.
