Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@carlson2 Congrats and best of luck with your return trip to the SS Indecision. It does not seem like you will be sailing for too long.

Am told that they are doing a thorough cleaning of the ship on May 20th, so that’s decision day.

Our auto insurance had us take our D off of our policy because she was attending school so many miles away. They said if she occasionally drives when home on break, we do not even need to add her back on temporarily. Our coverage is a well regarded, national company…so I am surprised that there is a variance in what companies do with students away at school.

Regardless, I will maintain the AAA membership for each kid…even though they will not have a car or be driving while away at school…I want them to have access to emergency road help if they are in someone else’s car (out in the middle of nowhere at 3:00 in the morning, etc. :-S).

@4kids2graduate AAA is huge in our house. My parents have had it since they got their licenses and my sister got it when she got hers. I have seen the importance of it many times in my life.

@readingclaygirl My dad added me to his AAA membership in the 70’s when I started driving and then went to college…it was a godsend. Back then I drove old, dilapidated beater cars…they broke down regularly!

I am continuing the tradition with the next generation in our family!

For me…I used it more over the years for locksmith help. I locked my keys in my car MANY times…on one particular day when I was in my 20’s, I locked them in my car in the morning when I got to work, then again when I got home at the end of the day. The most embarrassing part? The SAME locksmith showed up for both calls about 12 hours apart!

Feeling almost (but not quite) relieved at this time…S finished 4th and last AP test this afternoon, last scholarship app (for now) is due tomorrow, online course is done, two big projects due early next week are on their way to being done, job apps for summer kind of started… getting closer to being able to breathe easier!

Now…if only the grad announcements were done since graduation is in a little over 3 weeks 8-}

Our insurance is 100% paid for by H’s job and has a very wide network, including the hospital tied to D’s school AND down the street from it. So we will be asking for a waiver from the school’s insurance. Car insurance is going to be like @4kids2graduate -with her driving only temporarily on infrequent visits, we will not need to keep her on. We love AA-have not needed it for the new car, but when we drove used cars, it sure came in handy a few times. It’s also good for some serious discounts when we travel, though AARP usually beats them.

I noticed you’d mention AAA before @sseamom. While I like the bail-me-out if I’m stuck aspect to their services, I haven’t found their discounts through hotel bookings to be anything I’m willing to click through on. The comparable rates for the same nights without it have always presented as lower. Have you had better luck?

Half of dorm mountain has been moved to D’s room, after said room got a good cleaning.

The other half is still in the living room. But bedding has been washed and is put away for fall.
Downsizing the wardrobe is next on the agenda.

Hope the testing will be over soon and your HS seniors will be able to enjoy graduation and look forward to their freshman year of college.

Poll: Do HS senior girls tend to wear make-up and/or do they expect to during freshman year of college? (Old mom here with no clue.)

@dyiu13 when I visited my college it seemed like a lot were but a lot were not. I don’t wear makeup and don’t intend on starting. I think if your D does now she’ll probably continue but if she doesn’t she probably won’t. But it sort of depend on the culture. Is she planning on partying? Then she might want makeup.

My daughter wears makeup occasionally like if she has a class presentation or is going out somewhere nice-ish with friends on the weekend but not to school on a daily basis. I expect she will do the same in college.

@dyiu13 At DD’s school girls wear light make up to school.

@Waiting2exhale when we went on our trip a couple of years ago, we got the best discounts at a couple of places with AAA. But AARP usually beat them, as I said. I want to say that the few where we used AA \A didn’t accept AARP. There’s a local place we go for staycations once every couple of years, though, where the government employee discount beats the other discounts. I check them all whenever I reserve a room anywhere.

@dyiu some kids wear make up some don’t. D has one BFF who won’t leave the house without her top-shelf full-face make up, which she absolutely doesn’t need-she’s gorgeous, and another BFF who wears none. When we visited her college, most of the girls wore a little, but nothing heavy. My D ranges from full-on coverage to none, depending on the day. Whatever your D does now, she’ll probably continue. Except for 8 a.m. classes. No one cares at 8 a.m.

@mommdc downsizing the clothes and shoes is going to be painful. I mentioned that yesterday and D looked at me like I was insane. ā€œWHICH clothes exactly do you think I won’t NEED?!ā€ Sigh.

D has had a funny relationship with make-up. She used to wear quite a bit but by senior year hardly any. She has mentioned that she wonders if east coast students wear more, as well as dress-up more. Youth is a great time to try all sorts of versions of yourself, so I’m excited to see what changes palmkid college-edition will bring.

Well I can tell yall are not from the South where girls wear makeup when they begin teething  But seriously , I’d say 75% of females here wear makeup beginning in late middle school to early HS varying from blush and lip gloss to full on face makeup .

D wears make-up when she feels like it. She certainly loves to buy it and watch make-up tutorials. Always mascara and lip balm. That’s just part of her daily routine.

@Undercovermom1 D watches a lot of those tutorials. She likes to experiment with contouring and finishes and who knows what. On our trip to college weekend on the night before we reported to school, she gave me a makeover. She’s very good!

My D always wears make- up. She won’t leave the house without mascara. Her entire Christmas list this past year was different types of expensive ( in my opinion) make-up. I’m not sure where she gets it from. I’ve never worn any.

@dyiu13 My D16 and D14 bth wear makeup. D16 more so than D14. But she will go without make up too. She wears it more often than not. I would think she would continue to do so in college.
