^^memory quilt made of old uniforms, tees, etc.? Thinking of doing one of these.
My kids have carried their own health insurance cards for a few years now (though I better check that my son took his!). We did send both his passport and his ss card with him. Heās hoping to get a job, so will need the ss card and passport. And heās not far from Canada - so may need the passport. I believe if you have a passport, it substitutes for the birth certificate when doing the paperwork for jobs.
Northeastern handled it well - you could bring the ss card, etc to orientation in the summer. They would enter it all in the system so the kids didnāt need to bring it to school in the fall, but could get employment.
Heās been at school since Saturday. I think heās settling in well. We heard from him the first couple of evenings before his roommate got there. Now I think heās too busy - which is good. But difficult.
From my experience a passport will stand in for a birth certificate in pretty much any situation. On the other hand, for employment an original ss card is usually required. Just knowing the number isnāt enough. They need a photo copy of the original card and many places will insist on doing the photocopying themselves. It has to do with proof of eligibility to work in the US.
@me29034 It was me mentioning empty closet. Her closet is completely empty now with only one dress she didnāt like hanging in the middle. Two 49lb bags and 3 carry ons are parked in the middle of the living room. I have been selling her old clothes on eBay for years. Or donating it to our local charity. I donated all of her sport jacket and uniforms except for her Junior Olympicās jackets or anything else that has a sentimental value.
Great idea @carolinamom2boys. We will take 1 but have been told our car will be surrounded by upperclassmen and unloaded so nothing will be sitting on the curb. I am covering everything I can with a garbage bag to keep it dry however. Iāll have to make sure all get tagged on the outside so that all ends up at his room. Weāll also have to make sure those helpers donāt cart off our rain gear so that we can stay dry walking from the parking lot back to the dorm. I guess we could always use the tarpā¦,
I am planning on sending a copy of his passport and SS card with him. He will have his license as an official ID. D didnāt need the passport/SS card - hopefully, that will be true for S as well.
Quick question on HIPAA forms - most of the forms I find require you to specify the hospital/physicianās office in the form - are there any generic forms available that give blanker permission for any health org to share his health info with us parents?
S surprised me by asking me to help pack/sort stuff last night. Was nice sitting down with him and doing just that! Took out his sheets/comforter to be washed and the comforter is ripped Itās good we found that yesterday since we have a last round of shopping planned for tonight!
@arisamp Iāve had to fill one out at every doctorās office
We went to an attorney for Health Care
POA for home state and school state and living will. I think this is what you are looking for rather than the HIPPA firm for each docterās office. I know they are available on line but may need to be notarized.
@bookmom7 When D16 went to summer program she did take her passport with her. She had to provide identification for I9 forms so that she could receive her stipend. We left it with her for the semester in case she does land a job. Itās easier than keeping track of several documents.
@SouthFloridaMom9 D16 has a box of t-shirts and sweatshirts set aside for a quilt. Her idea.
Our move in went well. I am so glad we left on Friday instead of Saturday due to weather issues. We had a car full and still had another car full of things she had stored from her summer program. None of it was packed or labeled well. She has too many hangers and clothes. Not enough storage. We had a set of plastic drawers we bought for her room tha to store many different things)t was stored. A heavy box was placed on top of it for two weeks so now itās bowed in and not very functional. We may get one shipped to her as well as a cube storage shelf thingy. (roommate had one and it fit perfectly at the foot of the bed and gave flexibility to store many different things) We ended up staying an extra night and travel back was almost double the time than it normally is due to detours, I have heard from her once and she sounded tried but okay. Orientation week has long days and she is missing her sleep. I have been too busy at work to miss her too much but she is missed.
Congratulations to all with AP Scholars with distinction!!!
Glad to hear the move in went well @livinginLA Good luck to everyone with upcoming move ins. We leave on Saturday for a Sunday move in. S has not made any progress with packing since last Friday. He finished work today at noon. No idea how he got nothing done the rest of the day. Says he is seeing friends tonight so no time work on anything tonight but he is holed up in his room and not out with friends and it is 9:20. Guess it is all going to be crammed into tomorrow and Friday. Not what I wanted. {sigh}
@livinginLA Iām glad all went well for the most part. We drive to DC in 6 days. We were able to get everything into the car then realized that weād have to make s little more room for a small suitcase for my hubby and I. We will leave that small suitcase with her and bring back a duffel bag (sheāll need that small suitcase when she flies home for the holidays).
Sheās rooming with five other young ladies. Just took another look at the floor plan for her room again. Looks like the room has eight closets and each student has a dresser and storage space under their bed. Iām sure we will buy storage bins to go under her bed when we get there.
She got her first email from a professor yesterday which was exciting for her! Evidently the professor (Honors: Origins & Evolution of Modern Thought) requires each student to purchase 10 additional books from a bookstore in Georgetown. They are small paperback books for $10 each. We could purchase them from Amazon but my sweet girl was concerned that sheād would buy the wrong translation (books on poetry and other religions translated from the language of origin to English).
She also received her syllabus for the class and noticed that the required writing assignments are two/three pages double spaced. The first reading assignment is a book she read in here IB program in high school and the last paper she wrote was 25 pages single spaced (which was a common occurrence in the IB).
She also received emails regarding her Elliott School and Honors welcome dinners! A lot going on!
Iām enjoying the moving in stories! @me29034, I immediately thought Memory Quilt too. Itās heartbreaking to get rid of all the performance paraphernalia, but it sure takes up space! We did a huge garage sale of theater/dance/ice skating costumes last summerā¦some 15 years worth of stuff used by three daughters. So many memories (which was the real value in the stuff, honestly!) In some ways I wish I could do it all again (but with more wisdom and savvy!)
@kmc736, probably too late for you, but if you use your Target card, you donāt need to bring a receipt for returns.
Thanks to all for sharing move-in stories! How excitingāand how happyāand how sadāthat college is here for our 16ers! Bittersweet.
Itās been a flurry of activity at our house, and I was 4 days and 17 pages behind on this thread. Again! Hereās to persistent catching up.
D16 and I had pedicures together on Saturday. Then, we hosted a going-away brunch at our house on Sunday. She was able to see many of her friends (so were we!). She wanted me to hang out with her all day Monday, and we did some shopping. We thought we were pretty organized, but had a last-minute flurry Monday night finishing things. We went out to breakfast as a family on Tuesday and headed to the airport.
D had her big camping backpack for her pre-orientation trip in a duffel bag, another big rolling duffel, her normal carry-on suitcase, and a largish carry-on tote bag. After waiting in line to check luggage, got there one minute past the regular checked luggage cutoff and the unsympathetic agent put ālateā tags on both pieces of checked luggage, which made me stressed, but they both arrived. Thank heaven.
Late night taxi ride (connecting flight was delayed) and she arrived last night, rendezvousing at the airport for the taxi ride with a new friend that we met via this thread! (Iāll let the other parent reveal this connection if she wants to do so). Iāve spent all day missing her; have to keep reminding myself that Iāll see her for move-in next week, when Iāll bring two more suitcases (+ my own carry-on). A little contact from her today, but not enough, and now phone is offline for six days. Also spent all day running around buying the things I refused to buy during our shopping day on Mondayāall of them small and inexpensiveāto leave in her room as surprises when she unpacks.
House seems empty without her, just like it did when S13 left. S19, who can be best described as laconic, gave the best assessment of the loss: āI didnāt realize how weird it would feel without D16 around.ā
Major progress on the packing! We are almost ready to go on Friday.
Was at an event with many parents of my sonās HS classmates. All are a little disoriented with this whole process and there were a few tears.
Just landed in Boston. Our bags with perfect 49 lbs somehow were 49.5 and 50.5 lbs. I sent DD with heavier bag and they did not charge her for extra .5 lb. so check your bags on electronic scales at home.
I had envisioned hearing from S once a week but so far he has called every day. First two days were administrative in nature- emails going to wrong accounts, books, parking. Last night we got a call to get a download on the first roommate to move in and about the start of auditions. I think until the roommates all get there and he gets settled in to a routine, weāll be hearing from him more frequently than we planned.
I just realized that my D is going back in 6 days. She is working every day except Sunday and the day we leave, so lots to do still in the next few days.
