Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

BC has the same restriction as Georgetown.

@skieurope – Maybe it’s a Jesuit thing?

@AsleepAtTheWheel I think it’s just a coincidence. Notre Dame also restricts EA applicants, but is at least up front about it and calls theirs “Restrictive Early Action” like Stamford. On the flip side, Fairfield and Fordham don’t have restriction for EA applicants. The takeaway is you just can’t assume what any school’s policies are on EA/ED. Best to double-check.

Re: grading, it’s my understanding that the colleges look at the individual high school’s grading system and convert to unweighted grades for the most part. In the end, it’s the reason that looking at the whole package is important.

It’s also why I made a point of having my daughter do a fair amount of standardized testing and a few college classes, because I suspect her GPA will be disregarded since many of the grades are parent-awarded.

BC is okay with ED IIs, though-- just not ED I.

@carolinamom2boys Your school should note their grading scale on it’s profile. Each college will re-evaluate your schools grades by their own standards. I know OU wants an official transcript with unweighted on a four point scale. Our school only reports weighted grades on a 100 point scale. I was told to just send in the official transcript and they would evaluate it. They know all schools do things differently, at our school 90-100 is an A.

@ 3scoutsmom Thank you . That’s my point exactly. At schools where 90-100 is equal to an A , DS would be straight A student, but he has at least a 93 in every class but one class his entire year of HS.

That’s really frustrating. I went to a high school with that 93-100 scale too, while all the public schools in the area were 90-100. So much variation among schools/standards. On the other hand, an “honors” class can vary in difficulty among schools/instructors too.

Anyone else from So. Cal get an invitation to the UCLA open house on Sept. 26?

I submit my knowledge of private school admissions does not go deeper than top 20s or so. :frowning: Since our family was full pay, I considered the return on investment diminishing a lot with cost of our instate flagships providing a much greater value.

Interesting to see Notre Dame on the REA list with a ED rule. I didn’t think they had that rule in 2011 when I looked it up and D passed on applying.

The non-restriction for ED II is an odd one. The EA results are out on December 15th, the EDII applications are mostly due on Jan 1st (don’t know if any have it earlier) and so it is more like a clarification that anything else in my opinion since it would most likely make no difference to a student once EA results are out, one way or the other.

@mysonadad. Where did the invite come from? My son tends to ignore things.

I haven’t seen anything from UCLA.

D submitted an application today (no essay required). That certainly made things seem more real.

@mysonsdad We got that invite and we’re on the east coast. Our invite came with the list of off campus events we could attend if we can’t make it to the school for the 26th.

@LKnomad I got it in the mail, it was a blue post card. It is on September 26th, but does not say what time it is at. I sure would hate to see UCLA go through all the trouble of sending these out and make the mistake of not listing a time. I am sure they won’t care if you go. I am going to go out on a limb here, but from what I have seen from the students at my school, (we send a lot of students to UCLA), and from what I have read about your S, UCLA is almost a safety for him as it is for many others on this '16 thread. I am just speaking from my experience.

@MuggleMom, the UC’s out here try to recruit OOS kids who will pay full price to try to keep the tuition down for in-staters and to use the saved tax dollars for other programs. It is a controversial subject out here. Here are some stats about the increase in OOS students at UC’s. You can see as the recession hit the # of accepted OOS’ers increased while the # of in-staters decreased

@mysonsdad Thanks so much for that link. That was really eye opening.

We are in SoCal, but as far as I know my D didn’t get the UCLA invite. When I went on UCLA’s website I couldn’t find any mention of it anywhere. It’s possible it got overlooked in all the college mail that we get every day which ends up in the recycling bin, so I may look to see if anything came.

@Mom2jl, it wasn’t an invitation, it was just an announcement. If you are interested I would just show up. September 26, time unknown.

@Mom2jl, @LKnomad @grlscoutmom, I don’t know if I can upload pictures to this site, but my profile pic is the back of the postcard and next to this was the address. The front shows a pic of LA and says “Save the Date.”

@Mysonsdad thanks for the image. Probably will sit this one out. We already did the tour and I am getting college visit burn out.

Thanks @Mysonsdad. We may try to go to this since we haven’t done a tour yet. I noticed that last year’s open house was from 9am-1pm, but it’s odd that there’s no information online about this year’s. I may try to contact the admissions office this week to find out more.
