Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@dyiu13 do you just go on the college board website and request the scores be sent, and if not requested as part of an application , should we send them anyway?

Actually many colleges do not want you to send official report now. Only when you get accepted. But again, it depends on a school.

I noticed that Naviance page changed today for UCs and CalStates. It has ā€œinitial submissionā€ under office status. Did anyone else see this? Does it have anything to do with ELC?

Not every college will want the official AP score report, but most will want the official SAT report. You send it from the college board website, and there’s a charge for each one you send (it adds up quickly!) I’d put NHS and Beta under clubs rather than awards. The colleges will know what they are, regardless.

Definitely check the college’s preference when to send. Might be needed for placement or for credit, so an official Score Report from the CB is needed before registration opens usually.

Some schools view sending AP score reports early as ā€œdemonstrating interestā€ it really depends on the school. D used free score reports for this. For the common app it just asks you to self report but if you actually want credit for APs you have to send an official score report from the College Board. If your senior is taking an AP exam this May they can list their college as their free score report and ALL AP scores will be sent to that college at no extra expense.

Thanks everyone. It’s going to be a long fall.

Official AP scores are rarely required (at least I am not aware of any US schools - British schools do) as part of the application which is the reason most schools request them to be self reported while they REQUIRE standardized test scores to be reported officially.

Just realized I misread your post and your question didn’t reference SAT scores at all! Disregard my input, lol!

@ texasg Thanks for your input. I haven’t done the CA yet. Where do you self report these scores on other applications?

@carolinamom2boys - I have filled out a few college based apps and noticed that they don’t ask you for AP scores. These are mostly public schools and they are kind of making it clear that their admission is not based on AP scores. i.e., no weight given to APs during admission. If they do want to know, there is usually a section asking to list the scores. Only time APs will play a role for such schools is when you want to claim credit for AP classes after joining the college at which time the official AP report needs to be sent to them.

Well, we have not even looked at applications yet - D is still finishing up her essay for AP Lit - due Thursday morning. And she’s had band camp every day for the past three weeks…
I’m hoping to set aside some time every weekend so we can sit with D and go over the online apps to the colleges she wants to apply to.

She’s applying to UW-Eau Claire and SIU-Carbondale first, in September (her absolute safety, I’m not sure she needs it, but it makes her feel better - and SIU also happens to have everything she wants, she may just like it there - hasn’t visited yet.)

I’m having her hold off on Ball State, Ohio U, and IL State until the end of October, so she can try to bring her grades up first quarter. Idk if that will help or not, but she’s just below a 3.5 uw, and if she can get that up, she may get a little merit money, idk… We’ll see.

(Or her grades may drop, but we’ll cross that bridge if it comes - hopefully, not.)

Drive by post.
Frontier Airlines has $15 flight sale for Tuesday &Wednesdays. Perfect for college visiting. I just set up 1. Good luck.

First day of school for S. He dutifully emailed me some pictures for my first day collection. This sure will be an interesting year.

@MuggleMom - I noticed JetBlue has one also, but not nearly as cheap.

Do any of you have any good arguments to use with a kid who sees no reason to apply to more than one college? DD chose her favorite college as HS freshman and sees no reason to revise her opinion. We have visited multiple times over the years. I have no argument with the school as her first choice at all. I just think she needs to have at least one more college choice that she would be reasonably happy to attend, but it is hard to figure out which school that might be since she is not open to seriously considering the merits of any other school.

@Themommymommy How sure are you that she will be admitted to that school? What is her plan B if she doesn’t ?

@Themommymommy my D is in the same spot. It is VERY unlikely that she won’t get in to the one school she wants but her plan B is to apply early and if she doesn’t get in she’ll have time to apply to both A&M and UT Austin where she’ll be auto admits. As long as your D has a plan B I dont see anything wrong with ā€˜one and done’ saves on application fees;-)

Well, is the one college sure to admit her? If not, then she definitely needs one, or maybe two, more choices, I’d think.

But even if the school is a sure bet, it is still nice to have choices. Tell her that.

Can you just insist she apply to one more, just to make you happy?

My D is the opposite - I told her to pick her favorite three and apply - but she says she’ll apply to 5 (so far) because she liked them all, and can’t decide to narrow it down. She’s also paranoid she won’t be accepted to her choices… They are all sure bets for her, I’m sure, but she cannot be convinced…

Her scores and grades seem to be at a level that she should be confident of her admission to her true love. I like the idea of one and done when it comes to admission fees but I feel like kids change so much over their highschool years that my preference would be that she gets admitted to at least two schools and goes to both admitted students days to see/meet her future classmates and then make the final decision. She is ā€œwilllingā€ to apply to ā€œwhereverā€ as long as I understand she will not go there unless literally her first love school is wiped from the face of the earth by lets say a meteor or alien invasion. I guess a zombie apocalypse in the city might also conceivably change her mind. Her stated ideal is a huge school in a large city with a good food science program. @3scoutsmom one of the schools I am trying to get her to consider is Texas A&M She would likely also be an auto admit there. I don’t know much about the school except what I read on the website. Is the town more of a college town? or is it a decent size city?

.

@Mysonsdad I finally received my UCLA open house postcard. Happy to say I am still part of the club. We wont be attending, however. Already did a looooooong tour of the place.
