@sseamom S forgot his calculator last year. He remembered it when he started the math portion of the ACT.
This brings me to why he retook his ACT…
Here’s hoping everyone gets good news in the coming weeks! And thanks for the words of encouragement and commiseration. I’m going to hold onto that “grows up a lot senior year” thing like it was baby Dumbo’s magic feather.
As for getting married to save on college costs…there are occasional days, honestly, I might pay one of their classmates to take one off my hands.
I’m so glad I got to come home and take a nap! luckily D remembered the calculator only a mile from home or she’d have had to do without. Normally she is not running late and remembers everything, but I LOVE the ADHD cat hearding in IKEA description-that is certainly her on some mornings. Yesterday it was a hair extension and the sudden need to remove nail polish. It’s a good thing I don’t drink much…
Ballerina-does your D ask you for an opinion on her clothing and then change into the OPPOSITE of what you suggest? I can count on that every time-If I like the long skirt, she’ll wear the shorter one; if I prefer the blue pants, she’ll wear the black ones. It’s pretty funny. I stay out of the hair-anyone who can put in her own extensions and trim her own hair needs no help from me.
@sseamom I am never part of the selection committee! I can count how many outfits she tried that morning when I get back home and they all piled up on her bed. My poor husband doesn’t understand how within half an hour in the morning she can use steam rollers, then flatiron, then curling wand. Sometimes on my unlucky days after all that she put her hair in a ponytail and all the way to school I have to listen to her complaining on disadvantage of having fluffy hair.
Good luck to all the test takers (and a “well done” to those who overcame obstacles to make it there! ) @BeeDAre, what a great honor for your daughter! How fun to watch her excel at what she loves.
There’s a cross country meet today, but I’m missing it to do a senior photo session for someone else’s child. Hoping I can convince my daughter to pose for a few photos soon! We are in the midst of fall color here, and those leaves don’t last long!
Aagh, we still have not made appts for senior pictures! D has been trying to decide whether she wants to cut off her hair now and donate it (she’s only had it trimmed since the beginning of high school) or if she wants to cut it later in the year. And I didn’t want to have her pix taken a week before she cut it all off, when that is not how she will look for most of her senior year…
So, last week, she told me she’s keeping it long for now and cutting it in March.
Now that she’s decided, I need to make an appointment soon!
@Ballerina2016, @sseamom : The big obstacle here is hair. D inherited my hair and her older sister’s flatiron, and she is up two hours before the bus applying one to the other. Today she only had an hour to get ready, with predictable results-- so the hair looked fine, but I’m pretty sure that was the same thespian shirt she’s been sleeping in for three days, and the socks were not the comfortable ones. Hopefully the lack of comfy footwear won’t impact her math subscore, because that’s the one that desperately needs help.
And right at the moment, S thinks I don’t know he’s on the computer writing music instead of doing his next essay. @@
@petrichor11 Your son sounds so much like mine that I wonder if they were twins separated at birth. When will they realize that like the Great and Powerful Oz , CC moms know exactly what is going on with their children.
Rethinking the marriage thing, if these kids were to really go through with it, with the understanding that it is an arranged marriage, have prenuptial agreements, etc…they would rather do that and get college for free with housing, food etc…than end up with a large amount of debt or having to pass up their dream college due to expenses. I am not saying I agree or disagree, and no my S is not getting married (although his friends did try to set him up as a joke).
The student loan debt topic is starting to come up more and more with my students.
D16 got her first acceptance today. Not at all a surprise, but seeing that it’s a great financial fit and possibly a great academic fit – depending on major – it’s exciting nonetheless. I’m a Missouri journalism grad, and I knew she’d be admitted and guaranteed in-state tuition (due to the school’s Heritage Scholarship), but it’s still great to see it in black and white. (There might be more merit aid in the offing later, if she makes NMF). We’re OOS and she’s strongly considering the school’s photojournalism program – along with Honors College and possibly a double major (PoliSci).
We have a big East Coast college trip coming up next month (Drexel, Fordham, Barnard, BU, Northeastern, Wellesley) but it feels great to have this one in the back pocket… It’s a school that might end up in the front pocket even, so it’s a big stress reliever.
Tried posting a link, but the article itself was stuck behind a pay wall (but CC won’t let me delete the whole note).
It was an article from the WSJ imploring moms to tell their children to grow up and be software coders. It was for the moms here whose kids are writing code instead of writing essays. The message: In the long run, they’ll do just fine.
@carolinamom2boys : They do, don’t they! Wouldn’t it be funny if they ended up at the same school?
On a bright note, I just opened my mail to find a fee waiver to D’s dream school. Her scores from today will decide her likelihood of getting in-- she’s that on the edge. Sheer luck will determine if we can afford it if she does. She knows this, but will apply anyway, so the fee waiver is quite welcome.
@mysonsdad Hey if they play their cards right these kids can get married, get paid (because there are a lot of people looking to get married to Americans), and get college cheaper!
I am totally joking of course!
Being married to someone from another country, I have witnessed a constant stream of people trying to find people to marry so they can stay in the country. It is the never ending quest for a green card. I can easily see people turning this into a win/win scheme to get cheaper college as well as tuition paid for. In fact, I would not be surprised to see someone with a business somewhere of setting people up for a matchmaking service for this very reason.
I had been insistent that my son try to get all testing/re-testing done before the end of his junior year. Especially important since he does cross country in the fall, with several Saturdays booked for competitions. He was resistent, but did reluctantly agree.
So…he took the SAT subject tests in May 2015 (first attempt), and the ACT in June 2015 (2nd try). He drove himself for the first time in June, and the test center was 40 minutes away. Of course we did the verbal check list -pencils? paper? snack? water? calculator? admission ticket? ID? All were answered with a “yes”. THEN I got a panicked phone call at 7:45 when he arrived at the testing center and tried to check in…his ID was not in his wallet (he “always” keeps it there, so when he said yes to ID before he left home, he really meant yes to wallet).
He did call back 5 minutes later and say he found his ID in the bottom of his string bag (which he rarely uses). Turns out that is where he put it for the test a month earlier. Thank goodness he found it, but did he really drive for a whole month without his license? Oh, but I should be so proud he is so conscientious …he always had his wallet with him! I have a few more gray hairs that appeared in that 5 minutes between phone calls…as I panicked and began to rearrange in my head the whole first half of senior year to fit in another test date!
@petrichor11 …I feel your pain, you are not alone…and when things like this happen I too question the college-readiness thing. Just last night I had to bring his black shoes/socks to school last minute- first home game and he is in the marching band- and he did not plan well!
On a positive note - his scores from those last two test dates did end up good enough…so no more testing to do this fall!
