Welcome, @MostlyDolores !
Today is the day S is supposed to be doing two more college apps. He did one and discovered the second required him to write an essay about, basically, what he would bring to the class of 2020. The answer for this particular school stares him right in the face, but he just doesn’t want to write about it. It’s boring. I’m not sure whether to be thrilled he got the first one done or chain him to the computer until he finishes the second. Since the app’s free if he applies before a certain date I’m inclined to go for the second.
@MostlyDolores, try pulling your hair out

My DD sent me the link and well… everybody knows it.
Hearing all of these testing stories reminds me of my English teacher who taught half of the SAT prep class at school. She says her mom considers it karma she teaches it because on the day of her own SAT’s she woke up super late, made it to the test site with a minute to spare in her pajamas and having not really studied bombed the test.
Thanks @AsleepAtTheWheel and @carolinamom2boys. It will be quite interesting to see how this all works out.
Welcome @MostlyDolores ! Feel free to vent your frustrations here.
@mysonsdad and @AsleepAtTheWheel thanks. I suspect D is more interested in oncology and academic side.
I find this whole marriage before college to make use of financial aid process very interesting. I remember one of the parents being shocked when he received a zero efc for his son from FAFSA while expecting a full pay number from them. Apparently his son filled the FAFSA for parents and himself and marked himself as married with no income resulting in a 0 efc for the parent. They had to figure out how to get the FAFSA fixed because it was sent to colleges.
Coming to think of it, it was possible that the son filled out that he had a son (not married) which qualified him as an indenpendent adult.
Got a surprise this weekend. D2 got accepted to a college, University of Kansas. Of course she still has to send in her transcripts. Didn’t realize rolling admissions worked this fast. She applied 1st week of September.
Congrats@dadoftwingirls .
@dadoftwingirls Congrats!!!
I remember Iowa State gives an online admission in 48 hours, all with self reported transcript, scores etc. I don’t know if they still do it. Don’t have to pay the fees unless admission is accepted.
Congrats, @dadoftwingirls … with my D’s Mizzou acceptance, looks like a rivalry is possible. I heart rolling admissions
@dadoftwingirls congratulations
@dadoftwingirls congrats!
Applications done here, at last. I’m taking her and a friend to see Rent at one of the schools on her list (about an hour away) in 2 weeks to celebrate. It’s Homecoming weekend that day and it’s one of my alma maters. Hopefully it will be hers.
Congrats @kandcsmom !!! How great to have applications done. Enjoy your celebration.
thanks for all the congratulations. I was glad for D2 as her sisters is recognized more academically than D2. So it was nice D2 got the first college acceptance.
Congratulations @dadoftwingirls ! That definitely takes a little of the pressure off.
Wow! Applications completed already? School just started on Tuesday here and my D finally sort of narrowed her list to 12 or 13 schools. She’ll probably end up picking the ones with applications that require the least effort. She has a lowish GPA (3.46) and decent test scores (30 ACT) and limited ECs, so most schools she likes feel like a crapshoot. She’s applying mainly to OOS publics where her ACT score is at or near the top 25%.
It doesn’t help that her guidance counselor mentioned to us in passing that most applications aren’t due until February 1(?!), when in actuality she should be applying early action as early as November 1 in most cases. If she doesn’t get in anywhere THEN she can look at that February 1 deadline.
@texaspg, Iowa State does still offer an admissions decision in two days. I may force D to apply there (that’s one school where I believe she should be automatically admitted), and then hope that the prospect of having to go to Iowa will light a fire under her to do her other applications. (Not that there is anything wrong with Iowa, it’s just not really on our radar here in the DC area). The application looks like it will require 10 minutes to fill out.
@eh1234 we are on “farm schedule” in the Midwest and are already half way through the first quarter. She is only applying to 3 schools they are all on the Common App. One school has rolling admission, one she applied to early action (not binding or single choice) and the other releases approval starting November 1st. We can add more until the Feb deadline if need be.
Does anyone know about taking the AP test when they are not enrolled in the AP course? There are few in our school and she was considering it.
@eh1234 Many people are filling out apps this early to qualify for merit. If you are interested in merit, you may want to check deadlines for your schools.
