DD came back home about an hour ago. She said she had a bad headache and felt very tired, so she went to bed after taking advil.
She takes only one AP class this year. She originally registered 2 AP classes this year and decided to change one AP to another class because the AP class was boring. Her English Department does not provide any AP classes and she focuses on English classes. So that’s what it is. One fortunate stuff is every class in her school is honor or above.
Oh - and good luck to everyone taking tests, yes! DS had an event at school last night that many of his friends missed, resting up before the morning. He’s done with tests. He probably could’ve pulled his SAT up a bit, but he poked around Naviance, decided he was comfortable with his odds, especially with a safety school he loves, and said he’d take no more tests.
I’m happy to see Hampshire’s results from ditching tests, too. It seems so ridiculous that how one spends a few hours on a Wednesday morning for the PSAT, or Saturdays for SAT & ACT, can have so much significance.
@Dragonflygarden: That is something along the lines of what we have decided to do. It is my daughter this time around, thanks. We were thrown by some changes in our lives that altered her trajectory regarding courses of study and subsequent testing. We’ve visited and talked with people, pored over the viewbook and decided to go the AB route, wherein she will work toward a new program they have begun, and a certificate earned in applied and computational mathematics. Either that, or the switch.
D16 took her first SAT subject test this morning. She think it was ok, but she never knows how she does until she gets her results. She will be taking another subject test in early November, and then she will be done with standardized tests.
She has already received two acceptances from her safety state schools. The last one took less than 24 hours!! She submitted it right after school and the next morning she had an email that she is accepted!! One gives her full ride if she makes it to NMF and the other is full tuition+ (not sure how much until we receive the letters). It is good to have those now, because she will be applying to a lot of reaches.
She is doing her school assignments now and then she will be working on all the supplemental essays for those schools this weekend. She has already applied to 3 big highly competitive scholarships and has started 3 more. So much work and so little time!!
@lonetreegrad I did not know there were some safety type schools that will give an admission decision in one day - that is awesome! I wish the safeties that S16 applied to were able to provide a decision that quickly!
I am not sure this is still the case, but I do know in the past few years there were a few schools that did not allow SAT “score choice” (which is picking and choosing which scores to send in)…they required scores from all sittings to be submitted. Make sure you are double checking the details on score reporting for each college. @Smilla I would resend all scores to include the last subject test, just to make sure. The cost of sending scores is the same whether you send one or all of them.
@4kids2graduate We were quite shocked to get the acceptance so quickly. She had to report her test scores and grades for her classes on her application, so the acceptance was based on her reported information. She still has to submit her test scores and transcript officially. I guess they would revoke their acceptance if you lied in your application. The other acceptance took less than 2 weeks, but they waited to receive her SAT and transcript first. They are both on the NMF list of colleges that give out a lot of money to students and they are about 6 hours away from our house. That’s why they ended up on her list.
By the way, I think it costs the same to report all SAT test scores, but for ACT you have to pay separately for each test date. Right?
Continued congrats for all the acceptances. I’m thinking positively that all the testers smashed it today!
As I type this I’m sitting across from D in a Starbucks while she gets some work done. Common Ap or essays … I’m not sure which. I can’t see her screen. We figured it best to get out of the house, away from distractions. Tried the library first, but wifi was spotty at best. She asked me to sit with her, so here I am.
I made a spreadsheet with all due dates and who requires what. As far as recommended or optional letters and essay questions, D is considering those as all required. She did not take subject tests and is not applying to any schools that ask for them.
Picked up S after he was done with his SAT subject tests, he feels he did quite well, but I’ve heard that before. He was actually kinda excited about how well he did so we will see. I told him that he has run a hellova race over the last 4 years. Now that testing is over (forever) it feels like he has an easy jog to the finish line.
Yes congrats n super score wishes to all students who sat for exams today! My D thinks she crushed it n I hope she is correct for her sake. No matter what though she is done with that hurdle. She has a few more to go but we can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel! She is thankfully out hanging with her friends. Something that has had to take a back seat to studying. I am glad she is able now to resume her social life - she deserves it n has needed it!
Oh n btw I have been a card carrying member for over a year. Lol
@lonetreegrad Yes, for ACT scores it costs 12.00 per test date to send scores. I would think sending multiple ACT scores is less common than doing so with SAT scores…but maybe I am wrong on that.
@lvmjac1 I was unhappy with the AP summer load this year especially for the classes that are majority seniors who are working on apps too. Our district starts after Labor Day which is a huge time disadvantage so most of our AP assignments are independently studying the first 3 chapters of the textbook so they don’t start so far behind the districts that have a month of extra time before AP tests. But some of the teachers also include extras that seem to have little value.
@Mysonsdad Our district requires students to take the AP test if they take the class or they lose the extra gpa point. The district does pay for them. My son is applying to 1 school that does not accept any APs except his Physics C class so if he gets in he will just sit for them without studying. One of his friends who graduated last year wrote a really funny essay that had nothing to do with the test because he wasn’t going to get any credit from his college and he didn’t want to get a good score for a teacher he hated. He ended up not getting a score at all from the CB.
Quick question: does one have to include standard PE among the courses that one is currently taking when filling out the Common App? (i.e., does one only include academic or courses with varying levels like art/music?)
@Waiting2exhale Our district has to pay for the AP tests or no one would take them. Poor urban school district where 1/3 of the schools are Title 1 schools. If a child’s family qualifies for reduced lunch they get all AP test fees covered by the district. If the family does not qualify for reduced lunch the district covers the first test at 100% and then families pay $15 for each test after the first.
I can’t imagine having to pay for AP tests. By the time they are done they will have taken 28 between the 2 of them but some are 1 class 2 tests situations. Neither has taken more than 5 out of 8 classes as AP either.
