Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Note to self: get a dog. (The cat is not that charming.)

I get a response about 50% of the time with a cat photo. But the experimental design is not adequate to enable conclusions.

Hi guys, new question - is there a place to put, if applicable, press coverage of a kid on a college application? I’m guessing this is more relevant to those with athletes, but I was curious though my DS is not athletic.

@fretfulmother – I’d suggest accidentally leaving a copy of the article behind on the table at Starbucks after the interview is completed.

More seriously, I’ve been a CC addict for over two years now, and this is the first time that I’ve seen this question posed. You might want to consider posting it on the Parents Forum for views from experienced parents who don’t have a Class of 2016 kid (if you don’t get a knowledgeable response here). And if you don’t get a good response ?maybe call one of the schools’ admissions office. I’m really curious about the answer.

Neither of our kids have ever had any press coverage, although I wouldn’t have been surprised if S14 had made it onto the weekly ā€œpolice blotterā€ column.

I think many schools these days are googling kids.

Have the kid make a LinkedIn page and link relevant press coverage to it. In the CA, if the press coverage is really profound, then mention it in the Additional Info section. But there needs to be a real reason to mention it.

Hi everyone, we have just joined the ranks of families of students who have ā€œhit the submit buttonā€. My D was so nervous hitting the button for her first application she held our beloved Shih Tzu and made his paw push the submit button. LOL. Now I think she actually more nervous and anxious than she was before hand. ā€œWill I get in?ā€ ā€œDid I forget something?ā€, etc, etc. Now its the waiting game. Praying hands, fingers and toes crossed and anything else that may ease the tension. LOL.

Just think we have to go through this 11 more times…

fretful-would it be something your student did to GET the press coverage that you could list on the app? I’m thinking, ā€œCreated and ran a program for XYZā€ drawing state-wide participants over the course of three months," or something like that. To me, that’s more meaningful than press coverage by itself. D did exactly that-created and ran a program during the summer and she DID get press coverage, but it’s the PROGRAM she is listing on her applications or in her personal essay (depending on the college’s requirements), not the photo and short story. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone! And how cute about the doggie submitting

@fretfulmother: how about listing the accomplishment/extracurricular and then putting a link to the article? DS13 linked to some of his videos when he listed their awards on the CA. (He did compress to tiny urls.)

@fretfulmother, my S has been featured in two front page, full length articles in our local paper, not including his sporting events. Our GC had him list the events he did and then mention he was featured in XYZ newspaper. I guess the thought is, if they know his name and the name of the paper they can google him.

On another note, he sent an SAT score to his EA college and didn’t put the college’s SAT code. Does that really matter? Collegeboard site says it was sent.

Well, we are done with the first quarter, have senior pics done and paid for, have ordered the cap and gown and have had Homecoming,

D16 got a genericemail from her first choice that she is missing something from the Common App, which is weird because she has one acceptance thus far. Perhaps it’s recommendation letters because not every school requires them? She emailed them last night because, according to her, she can not tell what she is missing. She responded to the email so hopefully we will know something in the next couple of days so she can take care of it before they start reviewing applications on November 1st. If anyone has insight into this I’d appreciate it.

This is going too fast!!! :open_mouth:

@kandcsmom, well one thing you know, her CA isn’t missing her email.

@Mysonsdad Did he entered the school name? Then it is fine.

Yes he did. I just got off the phone with CB (I had to pay for an extra subject test he took last week) and they said as long as the school name is included everything is fine. Thank you @Ballerina2016

My S16 pushed the button on his first CA EA submission. Forgot to fill in his class rank. Chose undeclared science as a major. Hoping those aren’t going to be problems. This is a good school with a high acceptance rate, figured it would be a good one to break the ice. Others have mentioned the psychological weight their kids feel prior to hitting ā€œsubmitā€ and I see that it is our case as well. I’m afraid the weight won’t be lifted until the ones he really wants are in. I’m walking the fine line between being supportive and encouraging, and putting too much pressure on him. He just wants October to be over so he can get started on National Novel Writing Month.

Lazy 11th hour parenting: D said she wants to withdraw from her dual enrollment Calculus II, and we’re fine with it. She was ready to plead her case and both my husband and I were like, ā€œWell, it’s probably best you take it wherever you end up. It gives you more time to concentrate on your apps. We want you do be happy.ā€ I think our casual acceptance freaked her out a little bit.

Interesting part, she went from definitely dropping on Friday to Sunday night doing her homework just in case she changes her mind. Unintentional reverse psychology?

Here to confess. Lost my patience with DS and gave him a few sharp words. He implied that it was my fault that his LOR may not be ready for one of his reach school’s scholarship deadline. He has now been reminded whose process this is and that I am just the administrative assistant. The LOR will have to be resolved by Wednesday or the school will come off the list since it is unaffordable without the scholarship. I have been biting my tongue to avoid sharp words but this time I was unsuccessful. At least it was only he and I rather than in front of others. DS so wants to remain unstressed about this whole process but it is getting too close to deadlines for no urgency. It is just plain rude to force others up against deadlines because he does not want to be stressed. :-w

DH suggested DS may be dragging his feet because he has decided that the school is not a top choice. If so, I just wish he would say so and not apply. He should not be listing that school as a place he is applying on applications for other schools if he does not intend to apply.

@palm715 I have to laugh because we too have used that unintentional reverse psychology on our D (and S in past). My favorite line is ā€œdo what you think is best because it’s your life…we already went to collegeā€. S would say ok and drop the class - reverse or any psychology not working well on him. With D on the other hand, works like a charm. Sweated the first few times and then realized that it tends to work with her. For how much longer is the ultimate question. LOL.

@Cheeringsection you are in good company, I am sure. I too have lost patience more with D procrastination than trying to remain unstressed. For D, remaining unstressed doesn’t seem to be a viable option for her. Stress seems to be her new natural way of being, unfortunately but it just seems to be part of her makeup.

@crowlady Yes, there was a psychological weight lifted for my D hitting submit on her first application but that was instantaneously replaced by the weight of…Will I get in? and How will I be able to wait until the end of January to find out if I get or not? So in our house it’s that one weight has been displaced by another… 8-|
