@carolinamom2boys, wow, that is frustrating to say the least!!
We had our own mini-heart-attack today. Last Friday was the add/drop deadline., and there was nothing on the grades portal for DSās AP Euro class until this morning: 67% on a quiz (!) that he thought he did well on. I should clarify that my DS normally does take a while to hit his stride in social studies classes. For example, in AP World, he started with a C and the A- he got at the end was his proudest achievement in a fairly strong record. But in college mode, thereās not time to wait around. As a teacher in the school, I wasnāt the type to complain about late portal postings (or no portal postings) but I did go to the counselor today to say āhelp?āā¦
Anyway, DS went to the teacher and asked very nicely if he could do something about his D. The teacher apparently (āin Humanities style mathā according to DS) said his grade is in the B+/A- range because of all the other things NOT in the portal (?) so DS went to the GC and said weāre all ok after all. Iām still nervous.
I hate when teachers donāt input things. @fretfulmother
@Dragonflygarden Any other merit badge BOR can happen at any time, but our district is who does Eagle Board of Reviews meet just once month. They have representatives on the Board district wide. Our Scoutmasters can not sit on a board for candidates from our troop. I wish they could, but thatās not how it happens in our district. Thanks for your support . @GoodGrief16 You are so right , it is frustrating . Thanks for your support.
@fretfulmother Portals are both wonderful and terrible at the same time. Itās hard to see whatās missing, and things are weighted differently . Very confusing at times. Iām glad your son investigated.
@readingclaygirl @carolinamom2boys - Thank you! It also made me realize how (?over) invested I am in this whole business, that a D had me literally feeling panicked. Mostly because of the drop date having passedā¦
@carolinamom2boys - Iām really sorry about the Eagle situation. Is there some way to put on his apps that he was so close to the approval? Or even that it is āpendingā (for next spring or whenever they reconvene)?
@fretfulmother He will make Eagle rank, just a formality at this point. He will be able to update his college applications via email before the deadline. What he has missed out on is the opportunity to apply for National Eagle Scout Scholarships worth thousands of dollars spread out over 4 years . He is eligible to apply next year for the same scholarships which would be distributed over 4 years, but that wouldnāt help him his Freshman year and he will be going into his Freshman year with approx 30 AP credit hours so he may not need the scholarship for all 4 years. Heās taking it in stride and learning how interconnected everything is in the process. If one person drops the ball, it can have a very negative effect and itās basically out of his control. Important life lesson .
SAT debockle rectified and reports have been sent. Yay!
One more app submitted. All regular applications have been submitted. 2 honors apps outstanding but in progress. DS16 is getting things going finally. Dec 1 deadlines. Iām feeling more hopeful and less stressed today .
Today is the deadline for DDās school NMF application and as expected, she started to fill out the form about 30 mins ago. I sent consent form 10 mins ago.
@NYDad513 Just curious. Why a different NMF application deadline than rest of the country (Oct 7th)?
@lonetreegrad I donāt know exactly why but school sent out an e-mail in mid-September saying they got a permission to delay the deadline. Maybe they need more time to take care of all the applicant? 1/3 of her classmates are semifinalists.
Glad you received some good news on the SAT scores @carolinamom2boys!
DS received an invitation to apply to honors at one of his schools today. I do not know how many are invited each year but my memory from the tour is that they only accept 35. Not sure if he will apply or not. Totally up to him, but flattering to be invited nonetheless.
I saw the college essay he had to write as a class assignment last year out on his desk. I think that means progress on getting that part of the common app done. Fingers crossed!
@NYDad513 Wow! I am impressed! 1/3 of the class! My Dās class of 500 had only 3 semifinalist and 2 commended. Most kids donāt take the SAT, so they donāt prep for PSAT either.
@carolinamom2boys Glad todayās better! I would have lost my mind over the Eagle Scout thing-- kudos to you (and your son!) for still having yours.
Thanks @petrichor11 . The serenity prayer has been my Mantra over the past few days. That , and I canāt risk incarceration. Iād look terrible in a bright orange jumpsuit, although it would be the right color.
@carolinamom2boys ā I have a friend who has more than just a touch of OCD, and whenever we leave his house he has to check the front door a couple of times to make sure itās locked, and then when weāre a block away he makes me swear that he shut his garage door after he backed his car out onto the driveway. The problem is that every so often he goes back and finds out that he actually DID leave the garage door open, thus justifying all of the craziness. Itās all not too dissimilar to us parents here, who check and re-check all sorts of parts of our kids applications, with our kids, friends, other parents telling us that weāre crazy helicopter parents (said in a pejorative way), etc. And then you check on some SAT scores that should clearly have been sent, and lo and behold they in fact were NOT sent. Just like that open garage door. So that piece of your story now allows me to check and double check stuff without feeling like Iām totally nuts (which in fact I may be).
I too am really sorry to hear about the lost opportunity for the Scouts scholarship. Itās not great consolation, but your son is learning some life lessons here. Even before your note I thought of the serenity prayer. You did every thing to control the stuff you could control, and now thereās not much choice but to accept what is and to try to move in. Still sucks though.
Itās wonderful how much progress your son has made on his applications. Not too too much longer and theyāll all be in. Maybe when that point is reached some sort of celebratory dinner out for the whole family will be in order.
@AsleepAtTheWheel I canāt take the credit . DS16 is the one that caught the missing SATs. Hope your sophomore is doing better.
I am new to this site and enjoying it- my son is a senior and we are experiencing a lot of what I am reading. A quick question - do your high schools send first quarter grades to the colleges, or do they wait until the first semester grades are in? Just curious.
Welcome @laroyri My school sends
Semester grades.
