Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

I think for score choice for subject exams, we are talking about sending some scores for some subjects and not others. My son does not want his World History score to go out, it is too low. He also took the US History test twice. So score choice allows him to skip sending the WH test all together, and allows him to choose the top US history test score.

Subject tests do not get superscored. Score choice allows you to submit your best score instead of entire scoring history. Let’s say you have 700 for math in May and 800 in June. You submit your 800 score only for your Math 2 and ignore 700 like it never happened.

@LKnomad Do you know if all the CSU campuses offer Presidential Scholarship ? I know CSULB offers it and on their website they have “The campus will invite all qualified applicants to apply for President’s Scholarships and will notify students of acceptance in April 2016”. Did your S get the invitation directly from CSU ? Is this info session being held at CSU campus ? Like you guys we too have CSULB as our safety school. You don’t have to answer my questions if these are personal ? Thanks.

@indsfolax I don’t know about the other campuses. The invite was through his high school counselor. He received a note in class last week telling him to come to a meeting. He has the meeting tomorrow and I was sent an email by the counselor two days ago and invited to attend. My son says he thinks that the other students who were invited are the other students with 4.0s and a few others as well.

I don’t know if this is the invite or just an info session. I will know more tomorrow.

@Ballerina2016 okay I’m livid
after seeing your post I called UCLA and they said, “Oh yeah, you can score choice.” Like me, my friend, who was with me when I called last April could not believe they changed their answer. I then called Cal and the guy said S had to send them all scores including all subject tests, I then asked him if he was postively sure and that UCLA had just told me different, he then said he needed to go ask someone. When he got back on the phone he said they would score choice the tests for S. I told him that wasn’t my question and that my question was if we had to send all SAT subject tests scores. He still didnt know and then then sheepishly said no. This is the third time this has happened to us, where I ask something and am told one answer then find out it is something different. I am realizing two things now, one, always call twice, and two, maybe S should do whatever he wants because too many people in admissions don’t know what they are doing anyway. UGH!!! How do these admin officers expect our kids to be perfect when they dont even know their own rules. Ive already sent S scores but they assured me (both UCLA and Cal) they only look at the scores that will help (I hope they are sure on this one).

My S got a Presidential Scholarship from our local Cal State, we were invited to an info session and offered a scholarship of $25,000 (but still had to pay the app fee) and basically told he was in if he kept up his grades.

@Mysonsdad This is so frustrating, but I think this mirrors what UC system become today. This is very unfortunate that once a great public option became something else. That is why they are so unpredictable with admission. That is why they just had a change that you cannot get priority registration if you come with AP credits. This is probably the most affordable option, but I don’t know if this is the best fit.

Congratulations to your son on Presidential Scholarship.

I should add that I do not know much about other UCs. My observation is mainly about UCLA.

@Ballerina2016, It isnt just UC’s, though. S EA, top 10 school said they would only look at 2 subject test scores, so to only send two. Their website says “send as many as you like.” When S called for clarification they basically hinted to send a third score.

This is too vital for them not to have their you-know-what together.

Today DS heard yes from Pitt with an adorable video! :). No word on Honors or $$. And the “other P” emailed about an interview.

I’m sorry to all those dealing with SAT red tape!

@carolinamom2boys I just may have to watch that game! I do most of my Christmas shopping on line anyway.

Go Tigers!! @Cheeringsection and @lvmjac1

Congrats to your children, @lvmjac, @fretfulmother, and @Mysonsdad . @ballerina2016 and @Mysonsdad: we thought it was pretty clear from our reading of UC app that you had to send ALL your SAT 2s. I feel sort of annoyed too.

@EastGrad - thank you! Do those of you who heard from Pitt, know how long it would be until we would hear about merit aid if applicable (or stop hoping if not applicable!)

Feeling sad. Just poured over 100s of inspirational quotes for the yearbook ad we purchased for DS16. It was so hard to find just the right one. It’s becoming all too real. Found just the right one. Of course it’s by A.A.Milne. Pooh is near and dear my family’s heart . :frowning:

@fretfulmother My DS was admitted to Pitt’s honors college back at the end of Sept. I think I remember from the materials, and maybe what I read on the Pitt page of CC that merit determinations are made beginning in November. And Yikes it is November already! So maybe this month? I have to say that DS now gets mail from Pitt once a week. Each piece is different, some from the honors college, some from the College of Arts and Sciences and some from admissions encouraging him to enroll. Seems like a lot.

And Congrats to all who posted good news of acceptances and scholarships. Always nice to hear.

Yikes. My son just received an email from his alumni interviewer wanting to set up an interview THIS weekend!!! Talk about short notice.

Entering uncharted waters here. DS is not playing his winter sport for the first time in 13 years. It will be awesome to have more family dinners, less stress around the holidays, more time to spend on DD’s ECs, etc. DS is looking forward to less late night HW, more hanging out time with friends, actually sleeping past 8am on a Saturday, and MAYBE a PT holiday job. The spring sport will have him in the weight room two days a week and in pre-season workouts sometime in late January so it really is not that long of a break but just one more thing to add to the list of “never again” and “for the first time”.

@Cheeringsection so envious of your break. Ready for one here too .
