Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@twogirls UNC CH is one of my D’s favorite schools based upon her visit over the summer. Can your D share any inside info on life at the school? Are you from NC? Etc. Any extra info would be greatly appreciated as that is one of the applications my D is most vested in knowing the outcome (she applied EA).

I agree with 4kids2graduate in saying was an awesome senior project @sseamom’s D is doing! Boy do I wish our high school had half of what some of all you guys discuss as things that are possible in your high schools. We really settled in the wrong place for sure!

@labegg I recommend that your D call the admissions office and ask them to withdraw her application. I’m sure they will do it and will appreciate the phone call as it will be one less app they have to read and process. I don’'t know of any way to withdraw an application from the common app system.

From experience with older S, the college he withdrew application from wanted an email about withdrawing… then they have a record, and can verify it is the student based on the email address they already have on file.

All this talk of Pitt has me thinking D should consider it!

@lknomad that was quick! Good luck to your son.

@sseamom wow - sounds like an awesome experience for your daughter.

D had the strangest alumna interview the other day for a LAC that considers interviews “very important.” The interviewer spent the entire time telling D about the school and barely gave D any chance to speak. So?

Regarding Ivies. D is not applying to any. In fact, she decided not to apply to Stanford which was her dream school just a year ago. I honestly don’t know what changed her mind.

@petrichor11 I thought I was the only Publix blubberer. Don’t even let me watch the girl making cookies with pregnant mom. I’m no more good.

akids-I didn’t realize you lived around here! We live in WAY south Seattle so do not get downtown much at all, except for H’s work, and he takes light rail for that. My older kids did learn to drive at 16 but didn’t even bother getting their licenses until they moved out-no need with the buses, etc.

D’s school ties the senior project into a year-long class that encompasses all the core subjects, and they get 1 credit for the work. They have to review research on the topic, interview people with jobs in the area they’re researching, involve math somehow, and write a comprehensive report in addition to interning and having a mentor. The school helps them find people, though D just reached out on her own. Then in June they have to defend their research to a panel of experts. It’s very intense. They do exhibitions where they answer questions about projects all through high school preparing them for it. This is a public school that doesn’t offer things like sports or music, but has had some great success with many kids who never even thought about college! We drive to another city for her to go there, and it’s been so worth it.

Btw-D has no school today and just called the College Board. They now say that SAT scores for the Oct. 14 test will be out “by the end of next week”. LAST week they said, “by Nov. 5”. Sigh. Both the ACT and SAT people really just want our money. It’s not at all about screening for the best kids for admissions and I wish colleges understood that.

@sseamom I am glad you made that call. I was going to have my son do it later today. He got an email the originally said that the scores would be out yesterday. He has taken the SAT enough and he is satisfied with his scores, but his classmates were depending on the results coming out yesterday, because it was also the deadline for the Dec test and many wanted to see their scores so they could decide if they should test again. I have to wonder if they CB did this on purpose. They always have the deadline before the most recent score release. Having students sign up before knowing their scores would bring in more money.

Yes, EXACTLY, LK! I got an email saying it was yesterday too, and the counselor at D’s school did too. MANY of D’s classmates were counting on a response by yesterday because it was the deadline for regular registration of the Dec. test. And most of the kids are counting their pennies-it’s no small thing for them to pay extra! It
DOES almost seem deliberate.

I’m going to have D check each day next week just in case and will let you know when we see the scores!

@sseamom My son is checking constantly, so manybe I will let you know first

D just called one of her schools that said you can call for an update on your app after 2 weeks, and she is IN! Now we wait to see if the honors college and full ride merit money came through as well. Snaill mail…smh.

D just scheduled the alumni interview for her ED “dream school.” It’s this weekend. I thought last weekend was tense with all the application deadlines, but I know she is going to put a lot of pressure on herself. UGH, here’s hoping they hit it off!

The funny part is she wants my help putting together a “professional” outfit. Hawaii is about as casual as you can get, and as a family we have very few occasions to dress-up. I’m thinking she should invest in a nice pair of black pants and a button-down blouse? She has a nice pair of heels, but at 5’9" maybe she should find some cute flats in case she towers over the interviewer??

With all of you as my witness, I promise not to stress-out and just let her do her thing…

lvmjac1- I am sending you a PM

DD does not have any interview scheduled yet. Anyway, I told her that any alum interview will be a good chance to evaluate the school she’s applying and have ideas of what school looks. I especially stressed it because she did not want to visit any school she’s applying

@palm715, I would go with her to get an outfit, because having something a little dressy will come in handy in a few situations in college, and mostly because you won’t be able to do it next year…to play into the earlier comments about how we’re all getting nostalgic.

@palm715 I agree, a “business casual outfit” would work well. Enjoy the mother-daughter time!

D’s school has “dress for success” Thursdays, and the outfit palm suggests for her D is exactly the kind of thing they suggest for the girls. But if she has no experience with dressing up, do go with her. Girls that age have a tendency to think of black jeans as “dress pants” and loose flowy but button-down shirts as “professional”. I don’t think 5’9" is especially to tall for heels, but keep the heels moderate. Those platform, spikey heels the girls wear aren’t exactly professional.

@palm715 - she should go with the heels, it will show how confident she is. Nothing says confidence like a tall girl in heels!

Been out I guess- hundreds of messages to catch up on. We too are waiting on Pitt. Not sure why slow–I will fantasize it is because they are planning some huge merit package. Sent in 7 apps on Nov 1. Only Columbia left to go. Her dream (NY), but doubt we’ll be able to afford it even if she gets in.

Mother-daughter shopping this weekend for us too. DD will have an admission interview in two weeks at the school my DH and I really hope she will be attending. If admitted she should get half tuition off with her NMF, but if really lucky, she can get full tuition paid. Of course she needs to get admitted first.

She wore a very nice business like dress to her alumni interview. It was a right choice since it was at one of those fancy investment offices, but now she needs something business casual. We got very nice pants at WHBM, but need to shop for a nice top.
