Congrats to your S themommymommy! Such wonderful news!
Yes, congratulations to your Eagle Scout, @Suzima! So much great news on this list! It is a delight to open the link every day.
From another Eagle mom, congratulations @Suzima!
So much good news to wake up to on this thread! I’m doing the happy dance in Hawaii for you all! :-c
@crowlady , SO pleased for your son! And lol at the “do I have to go to school?” comment…does feel a bit like winning the lottery, no doubt. AsleepattheWheel has some good advice; maybe another app or two is in order?
@Themommymommy, hooray for your future dentist too! What a great profession to have represented in the family
Thanks all for the congrats, as well as the support over the last year or so. And yes @AsleepAtTheWheel, if he wants to add another reach I’m happy with that. I’ve told him in the past that if he wants to do the additional work he can even try for MIT (his dream). I think of it as practice for the grad school application process.
@Suzima – Congrats on your son’s achieving Eagle Scout status. Not that this is why he did this, but I suspect that colleges don’t value this achievement as much as they should.
Congrats @crowlady!!
@AsleepAtTheWheel - We will see! I hope that they do. It shows that he really stuck to something and reached a goal which is what they said they looked for at all of the colleges that we visited. We used a college admission consultant for some things and she felt like they still valued it a lot. Fingers crossed!
@suzima We had a negative response from an Honors representative when we told her that DS16 was earning his Eagle , her response was " everyone’s an Eagle Scout, what makes you different ?" Clearly that’s not true because approx 6% scouts ever make it to Eagle. Something else you may not be aware of is the deadline for Eagle Scout scholarships require that the BOR date was before 10/31. This is the first year it’s been moved up from 12/31.
Thanks for the info @carolinamom2boys! Interesting comment from the Honors rep. My son should have had his BOR in September but a snafu moved it to November. Just glad it is done!
@suzima Mine should’ve have met the deadline as well, but his leader did not schedule it as requested so we missed the deadline , but they are eligible to apply for the scholarship next year according to the website. Some are quite substantial.
@suzima I have been under the impression that college take ANYTHING that requires a continuous participation and effort into high consideration. It shows a long term dedication to something (and with students that accomplish something of that magnitude) it is usually not to the exclusion of other things - grades, test scores, other EC’s, etc.).
Therefore, carolinamom2boys, I personally would take that honors reps response with grain of salt. As we have all seen, there are good reps and bad reps. Anyone who speaks like that to or about a potential student’s accomplishment is not very good, in my humble opinion!
@lvmjac1 It’s interesting that the last time we went back to visit the Honors College she was nowhere to be found. I wish I would see her though so I could thank her. Her doubting what made DS16 special fired him up so much that he’s determined to show her why he’s special. He rocked out some awesome essays for his application. Time will tell. His other school that he’s highly interested in values Eagle Scouts greatly and even posts the number of Eagle Scouts on their website.
Hey folks, now that we have an acceptance here in the Crow’s Nest, I went looking to remind myself when and how the list of acceptances gets started. Looks like we can ask a super moderator to start a new official thread in the Parent’s Cafe. Here are past years if you are interested:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search?cat=15&adv=1&search=List+of+Acceptances
I helped get the 2014/2018 list onto a Google Doc because it bumped into new word limits. Last year the group wasn’t too comfortable with using Google, and also didn’t have a lot of participation (privacy concerns? reduced CC activity?) so it never had issues with the limits. Probably best to get started in a thread anyway until we run into problems.
Anybody here a super moderator?
“Anyone who speaks like that to or about a potential student’s accomplishment is not very good, in my humble opinion!”
I must concur. 100%. Consistent membership, increased responsibility and levels of work, projects and presentation will absolutely carry great weight for your child’s college application.
@carolinamom2boys and all the other eagle scouts, I wonder if that honors college rep was trying to express that just saying you are an eagle scout as a line on a resume doesn’t really say that much about the individual that is unique to that person- that the boy needs to elaborate beyond that and explain what his project was and why he chose it etc. Maybe she was just poorly stating that show don’t tell line you hear so much in this process.

Here’s my theory about the Eagle Scout thing. I think it applies to many, but not all colleges.
The Boy Scouts are simply politically incorrect. Still. Every aspect of colleges, including admissions, is permeated by politics. More so at the more selective “elite” schools, more or less so depending on geographic location, but to some extent everywhere. So right off the bat I think that there will be a certain level of bias against the Boy Scouts as a worthwhile endeavor. It may not be conscious, but it may. But I think that it’s there.
Also, frequently with political bias comes ignorance. I wouldn’t be surprised if many who sit on an admissions committee have no direct personal experience with the Boy Scouts, and have no clue what sort of time, work, and commitment is required to become an Eagle Scout. They don’t know, and they don’t care (see above paragraph).
The result is that this achievement is not valued c/w other activities that are more “correct.”
I write this as a parent whose kids have no involvement in scouting. My own personal history is that I’m a cub scout dropout at age 8. So I have no dog in this hunt.
We’ve been told-- and my apologies, I really don’t remember where-- that Eagle Scout and Boys’ State delegate are considered roughly equivalent. S observed that well over half the guys at Boys State were working on their Eagle rank, so there appears to be quite a bit of overlap, if nothing else.
