@carolinamom2boys – He’s on a hot streak, like a gambler who can only roll 7’s. But in your son’s case its not luck. It’s the product of all of his work over the last few years. Some good genes probably didn’t hurt.
Congrats!! It’s wonderful to have choices. Given his serious nature it will be great when it’s all said and done and he can relax, at least a bit.
@Booajo if you DC is looking fo another similar water related sport she could see if her school has “battleship” which my DD heard about on a college visit. Apparently it is played across a huge pool in tiny kayaks and is as brutally competitive as it sounds. My dd was warned to wear a one piece suit if she decided to join that club.
My favorite ec my daughter finally has time to join now that she finished her college apps is the philological society. she wanted to join since 9th grade but never had time. They finally switched the meeting day so she no longer has a conflict and she joined as soon as her apps were done.
S has a friend who is co-president of the school’s physic’s club. Apparently three kids decided to make a physics club and make all three of them president so they could pad their resumes. Apparently the club does nothing. My son was asked to be treasurer of the herbal tea club. While this club was active, them met weekly and drank herbal tea. It disbanded shortly after he was asked to be treasurer. He never joined. He thinks herbal tea is cheating. He prefers potent Turkish tea.
D is at an event today with a group of youth leaders. She just texted me, “Am I applying to…?” Looks like we’re adding one more school to the list, lol. The funny thing is that she’s gone back and forth about this one, but it’s near and dear to the heart of her HS’s founder so I’m not surprised that she’s adding it after hearing so much about it. We toured it when she was back in middle school because we were vacationing in that town, just for fun. I was very impressed as a parent. The required essay topic will have a direct tie to her HS, and the founder, so I’m hopeful that even though we missed the EA deadline, that will help her .
My DD had a little problem when she tried to join several clubs at school. When she became 8-9th grade, her interests in literature increased and she tried a few literacy magazine club. At her school, asian kids are involved more STEM oriented clubs and caucasian kids are more humanity oriented clubs and she’s a little bit off. Soon she realized that she was treated as a typical asian student who read mostly fantasy or sf novels. She used to read a lot of fantasy novels but her taste changed a lot during 7-8th grade and her favorite at 9th grade was Dostoyevsky. So she felt she was not treated properly and she did not like to join any of literacy club. I wish she was more flexible on the issue, but she was very sensitive to multi cultural issue at the time with some other issues at the classroom.
So… she found a literacy magazine club with other kids who had similar problem focusing on multi cultural issues. Founding was an easy job. Fill the form and submit. But publishing their first magazine was not easy. The biggest problem was how to fund to publish their magazine. She tried PTA first. Her school PTA raises quite money like more $800,000 last year out of 1200 total number of students. She asked money to PTA but PTA did not give her money. So she had to find another funding source. She started to contact alums and she can raise about $700 to publish their first issue.
Asking other students articles, editing, designing and printing were not an easy job but in the end, they published their first issue, selling the magazine to other students, teachers and parents. She wishes they get funded this year from PTA because they have a record of publishing their first issue. She did not ask me anything regarding her literacy club and I think it is a terrific experience as a high school student.
I doubt she can put her experience into college application. But in the end, what kids did with passion and heart, I think it will reward as a different form later in their lives.
Sometimes it’s not the students’ fault that a club doesn’t make it. Our school has had a lot of trouble with teachers signing up as sponsors but then not supporting the club in terms of meetings. I found it interesting this year that we have a new AP science teacher that does a science club where if students attend 2 meetings per week for an entire unit of study they get 5 extra credit points on the unit test. So they go study collectively in his room before or after school for 3 hours a week and get homework done, extra credit, and lots of subject specific club hours for college apps.
Congrats carolinamom2boys! So great to have so much good news right before the holidays! Hope the acceptances keep rolling in! (unless like with my D that may make things more stressful…LOL)
I’m currently freaking out because my online portal says Decision Made! Now the waiting intensifies. Quite an annoying email. I want to know what the decision is!
I’m guessing snail mail. I shuffled through today’s mail just in case. And checked the mailbox again. And refreshed my email. I never heard of that happening before. It was weird, I got a feeling I should go check and there it was. I’m just hoping the mail isn’t slow. It doesn’t even have to go that far, less than an hour.
@NYDad513 your daughter should be very proud of not only publishing the magazine but getting the funding to do so. The editing alone involved in making a presentable publication is a huge undertaking. To have her write, fund raise, coordinate with the other students is really impressive. I hope she was able to convey all that getting that first issue published entailed. I would agree that she has likely learned so much in the process that will benefit her in the future.
