Thanks @crowlady. I haven’t been on the Tulane thread but I can imagine. Like we saw on the Northeastern thread, she is in very good company and that makes this bitter pill a little better to swallow. I am sure this will not be the only less than perfect news she receives. As it goes, you never know what you can accomplish if you do not at least try. IMO the best thing to do is try and help our kids to be resilient.
Thanks for all condolences. She’s fine and we expected deferral based on Naviance. So it’s not a shock to her or me.
Her school performance in EA/ED this year, however, surprises me. Last year, 9 kids was accepted to Harvard, 4 to Yale, 2 to Princeton and 5 to Columbia at EA/ED period. This year, 6 to Harvard, 1 to Yale, and 1 to Columbia. Well, I think we need to wait until all RD result comes in.
Awaiting decision from one of her favorite schools tomorrow. At least she will not have regrets that she did not try.
Finger crossed for your daughter @Ballerina016 .
Thank you @NYDad513
I’m still trying to decide what I think about this ED/EA stuff. I get why it’s helpful for colleges in yield management, but it also seems to extend and heighten the stress for so many kids. I know a student who applied ED last year to her “dream school”, didn’t get in, and struggled mightily until April. But I guess for every one who experiences that there’s another who gets the ED acceptance and good funding, and can relax and enjoy the rest of the year. Pros and cons, like most things.
i wish every HS would give entering first year students Frank Bruni’s book, “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be.” This is such a wrenching time for these kids, with a layer of final exams slathered on top. @NYDad513, if I had a donut in the house, I’d eat it in your D’s honor. @BeeDAre - glad the surgery went well, and hope you can all breathe the rest of this week.
I’m thinking of telling the relatives that there’s a moratorium on college talk over Christmas, possibly extending until 1 May.
Oh, @NYDad513, I am disappointed to hear your news
@2manybooks Thanks a lot. This is another learning period. Kids learn more about the world… There are many wonderful kids outside of their school and their friends. And, in the end, there are always places where they can flourish. So I don’t complain much.
I don’t know ED/EA is good or bad. But compared to my college app experience, this is less stressful. We could apply only one school back then. We had to visit to the college we applied to take test on the test date. If we made it, we were in. Otherwise, welcome to a gap year. There is no make up test or another chance for a year. If you a had bad cold or in a traffic jam, that’s our bad luck for one year.
I allowed EA but not ED. We need to be able compare financials. I still don’t know if D got in–she refuses to check portal. She prefers a letter–“it seems more real”. So we wait.
So sorry for all of the deferrals. Limbo is a difficult state to be in. Our children are very lucky in one respect though. They have loving, supportive parents to help them negotiate this sometimes bumpy ride to success. Many children do not have this support and are lost along the way. Hoping for more good news for everyone tomorrow .
I allowed EA but not ED as well (mainly because there is not a clear favorite, and the “lead school” is still evolving). In the end, DC chose to go RA all the way. That may be the best decision. She has nerves of steel and a great ability to focus and compartmentalize. I am pulling for each of you virtually, though! Great to see the acceptances and the deferrals. For example, a maybe from Yale is worth a box of doughnuts! Fingers crossed it turns into a “Yes” for NYDaughter513!
Finally wrangled the EA news from my D. Admitted to Northeastern. Decent financial aid, but will likely be replaced by guaranteed NMF award of 30K if she advances. So far, doing great on admits Still awaiting one more EA, then two RDs… and then a look at where $$$ lands.
I am new to this thread - just amazed at such an awesome supportive group. My acc got deferred from NEU . What is the % of deferred kids that get accepted during RD cycle?
Hard to keep up with the activity here! But congratulations, condolences, and doughnuts and ice cream (together or separately, as warranted) on hand as needed. May all these deferrals turn into acceptances at the perfect school.
And welcome, @rdeyus . No idea the answer to that question. I suppose it depends on the school and the year?
We’re still waiting on two late EA results. One is rumoured to be out somewhere between today and Friday, and one late Friday. I am definitely not handling the wait well. S is focussed on finals and Christmas, thank God.
This is a busy week! Congrats to those accepted and hugs to those deferred or otherwise. @BeeDAre - healing thoughts sent your way!
For those with Northeastern results, just read the Northeastern had 890 ED applications and a record 22,258 EA applications! Can’t imagine what the RD number will be.
@ItsJustSchool My family would’ve loved the opportunity to go RD and spread out some of these apps. Unfortunately , to be considered for merit or Honors for all of our choices, you had to apply EA or ED. I guess that’s the schools way of determining interest. I’m not sure why else they might require early applications. So now we wait.
Welcome @rdeyus ! You’ll love it here
Congratulations @happymochi !
@BeeDAre wishing for a speedy recovery for your DH.
Congratulations to all the acceptances!!
@NYDad513 sorry for your daughters deferral!
Welcome @rdeyus !
@BeeDAre best recovery wishes to your dh!!
