Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Thanks for the FSA ID reminder! I needed to re-do mine, as did my D13 to meet the new requirements. Set up D16’s too now

Wow, had to go out last night and wasn’t able to get on until this morning and so much going on…Super Congrats to all receiving great news…Hugs and sweet delicious things to those upset over deferrals! I definitely agree that this process is a bit too much at times for these great kids to bear (and us parents to witness) as well as the sentiment of the “stolen senior year”. Maybe this is the way it is supposed to be if you reach for the stars…I do not know… I also agree that with @petrichor11 that it is great to have all you hear to come to for a welcoming ear…my “real” people do not really get it. My D was very upset last night when in talking with a trusted (and quite educated) adult about ways to move forward through this process (after the deferral and still waiting for the rest of her EA and RD applications) this person totally missed the boat and actually made her feel like there was something wrong with her for feeling appropriately sad (and still a bit salty) about the deferral. This person did not understand at all that with this deferral she is now wondering if she was possibly “off base” about many of the other schools on her list (which would put her in line for many more deferrals or outright rejections). We do not think this is so but this is where this young persons mind is at. I am shocked that this very educated person could be so incredibly insensitive to someone he has known to be such a high striving person and intense person. Thanks to all for being here for us…it really means so much!

Finally was able to have our froyo last night…definitely made things a little better!

@4kids2graduate we are feeling way less than hopeful here too. All of S top choice schools have less than a 10% RD acceptance rate so we are figuring we are going to get routed here. S has accomplished more than anyone at our school ever has, he has the highest SAT score anyone at our school has ever gotten, the highest subject tests scores, highest gpa, and is the only kid out of 9,000 students in our district to hold a statewide office in an outside student organization, but in the end he is just another unhooked, white male (not looking to start an argument). He wanted to go to a college no one at our school has ever been accepted to, now we are just hoping he gets into the same top 25 college that other kids in our school do. He at least has a full ride to our local Cal State, I am not looking for sympathy, but looking at reality.

@Mysonsdad @EastGrad Thank you! I will attempt to be less “fretful” (I actually picked the handle because it’s the name of the magazine that Marge Simpson subscribes to to become more of a tiger mother and I thought it was a way to make fun of myself!)

@Skates76 - I think it’s really valuable that your DD had that time to think about her former first choice. And the NMF option with later med school at old-first-choice-U sounds like a great solution!

@Ballerina016 @kittymom1102 @4kids2graduate - I think 10% chance in the RD round is worth at least keeping one MIT item hidden just in case. Remember, for unhooked applicants (everything but legacy, which is NOT counted at MIT, but they do have athletes for their few Div-1 sports, as well as other hooks), the acceptance rate for EA was also less than 10%! I know some kids from the school where I teach who absolutely were deferred EA but admitted RD and are at MIT now.

And BTW, the guy I think of as math/science #1 in DS’s class was deferred from MIT yesterday.

Congratulations @petrichor11 , @cakeisgreat , @Waiting2exhale and @GoodGrief16 !!

There! I found a “fair use” thumbnail of the reference that no one else ever seems to know about. for my avatar.

Hugs to all who are dealing with more waiting!

Yes, yes, yes to being brain dead. I am pretty much expecting to forget something for Christmas and I still can’t figure out what to get for my husband.

Should hear from the last EA school today. We played it pretty safe and ended up with all acceptances and one deferral so not bad.

And, drumroll please, 100% on the AP Stats exam, the 4.0 lives to see another day!!

I am so happy right now that DS16 did not apply to any selective schools after I see what all of you and your children are going through . Our time for disappointment is coming with Honors and scholarship decisions .

Hopefully not too much disappointment @carolinamom2boys ! Anything you can share?

We are with you @carolinamom2boys. No really selective schools. As D says “all of my schools are matches or safeties and reaches at the same time.” The reaches are the honors programs.

@carolinamom2boys, we dealt with the scholarship being too small. It was for a little over half tuition, but for an OOS school with pretty high tuition it likely won’t be enough. The SAT scores finally arrived at the sure thing huge scholarship for NMSF school, so he should be getting an official acceptance from them soon.

I can say that I am a bit envious of the families that do not have many, if any, selective schools on their list. @CAMidwestMom Super Congrats for the 100 on his AP Stats Exam! Fingers and toes crossed for all receiving decisions today, and afterwards and for those waiting hoping and praying for honors and scholarship notifications. And I cannot believe that SAT scores are still being an issue (or a just resolved issue) for some…in this day and age that is beyond ridiculous! So glad that @mstomper scores finally received!
@Mysonsdad We at our house feel exactly the same way you guys do. Very similar feelings being had at our house. Lets hope that in the end it all works out for the best!

I have been working 12-hour days, and then doing more work at home at night. Every time I check on this thread there are 40+ notes. I haven’t posted a note in a couple of days, so I won’t even try to post the individual responses that I’d like to write. No can do.

There have been some absolutely spectacular acceptances and merit scholarships announced. Congratulations. It’s nice that sometimes the world works the way that it is supposed to work.
There have also been disappointments. It’s been already stated very elegantly that, sadly, many many deserving kids who are essentially indistinguishable from accepted/admitted kids get turned away. Given that we’re currently still more or less in the EA/ED round, remember that for those who’ve been deferred you’re now running a 5,000 meter race, not a 1,500. Have faith that your kids will be accepted to a very high quality school where they could never exhaust the opportunities and resources that are there. But for the kids (and for the parents) it really stings. I’m sorry.

The biggest news here is that S14 flew home from Atlanta on Tuesday night. He’s home for four weeks ($62,000+/year and it’s a really really short year). He’s in good spirits, more than anything happy to be eating home-cooking and sleeping in his own bed. This semester’s grades are absolutely critical in terms of getting into Emory’s undergraduate business program. We’ll see.

P.S. @palm715 – I find the fact that your daughter hasn’t check that portal AND that you have not beaten her to be the most amazing thing I’ve read in over 200 posts.

@palm715 – I second that:

“I find the fact that your daughter hasn’t check that portal … to be the most amazing thing I’ve read in over 200 posts.”

Third! I’d have ripped out every hair on my head by now.

Well, looks like today is the big day for D’s last EA schools – thanks to CC for the inside scoop on when those will post… She already has a likely letter from one but won’t be able to attend without significant merit. (We were gapped when doing the net price calculator.)

Then there is a BIG wait for word from her RD schools. (She should get into one.) If she’s very lucky she’ll get early word in late January (from USC) about a merit scholarship (fingers crossed), but otherwise will get notified in the last week of April. It seems like sooooooo far away. She has favorites among her accepted schools but will probably not decide until she hears from them.

I sure hope you all are still here then!

@MidwestMomTo2 Hoping for good EA news for your D!

@MidwestMomTo2 I think we might be waiting on the same school today and for us, it was the most expensive on the NPC, so we have no high expectations. At this point, I just want to hear and move on! I agree, April seems so far away and we will have one dream RD app in. I hope we can manage the stress of that. Who am I kidding, it’s me that has to manage stress. I’m sure it’ll be fine until the date gets closer! Good luck to you guys today!

I can sum it up as I don’t always understand her, but that’s one of the reasons I love her. She will go to a college, experience new things, learn from and teach others, and grow into a useful adult. Along the way, my only real hope is she is happy and healthy.

I love college research and planning (and of course, hanging out with you guys) and am spending an inordinate amount of time on it. It’s a hobby like knitting or surfing. I get a lot of joy from her journey, but that doesn’t make it mine.

Now, if any of you have Class of 2021 kids, you will meet a whole new palm715. When my son was in first grade he asked me if he quit school would he go to jail. I said no but daddy and I might. After a pause he said, “Well for how long?" I have to be like white on rice for that kid!

@CAMidwestMom yes, i think our kids have overlaps! the net price calculator can be ugly from schools that don’t promise to meet need. (also: apparently I’ve lost track of a school, and in my post forgot entirely about another RD school that she loves and that is known for gapping people. She had to apply by Dec. 1 for merit to that school, so I keep grouping it with EAs.)

Thanks @ChicagoSportsFn! We hail from that area and I only wish my D had schools on her list from there
