Congrats @labegg and @crowlady on the Drexel admissions. That tuition does sound intimidating!
@LKnomad, Reed does sound like a wonderful potential fit for your son! Do you know their decision date?
It will be interesting to see how EA/ED/Reg decision policies mutate in the years ahead. It does seem that EA is almost becoming “Regular Decision” and Regular is becoming “Second Chance” as more people clue into these goofy college admissions games. The itnernet certainly changed college admissions forever, didn’t it? I wish in general there were less games, less mailings (maybe no unsolicited mailings!), and much more focus on how to provide quality academics at an affordable price.
@AsleepAtTheWheel People will always find differences worth arguing over In my woulda coulda shoulda I wonder if I should have suggested my son consider Reed. I thought it was too selective, and in the end he shied away from LACs. Also, I believe (in part because of things he’s said) he’d relish being a liberal in a more conservative environment – more people to try to convert.
DD finally checked the Drexel portal and was admitted, though if she was about as stoic about the news as possible. No word on merit yet, have to wait for the snail mail according to the portal. They had full tuition NMF scholarship that suddenly disappeared this fall in some sort name dispute with NMSC. Pretty unaffordable otherwise. Still waiting on Case Western on the 19th and U of Delaware rolling admission decision which should be soon. They are two of her favorites.
Today is not a day I will soon forget! S got accepted to one of his schools, the last one we had been waiting on, but didn’t receive any merit aid. That wasn’t a total surprise and in a funny twist, when I showed him the portal, he said, "Oh yeah, I kind of forgot about them.’ So, that shows how much he had written it off based on the low expectation of merit aid. And against this backdrop, I read on CC that another school had posted awards on their portal. I go to check it out with a sense of dread only to find out that he got an ‘incentive grant’ that almost fully covers the tuition. I was stunned. He was stunned. We clicked on the explanation multiple times and I finally called the school. Yes, it’s for all four years. No, you don’t have to reapply. “Congratulations! That’s a good one!”
To say this is a roller coaster ride is the understatement of the year at this point. I think we are still in shock. To hear him say ‘wait, this is one of my top choices and I just got a big scholarship’ was one of the best things ever. But, it also goes to show how hopefully, the right things come together and they land at the right place.
I do feel that EA was basically the “regular” decision time for my D. She has 2 schools left, that had ED not EA. In @8. The 2 left are her 2 reachiest. 1 is a true lottery (Columbia). I doubt we’ll be able to swing that even if she gets in. The scholarship wait is the bigger drama here. She has done really really well with merit $. Makes it harder for her to choose.
Reed was up there on D’s list for a long time, but she decided not to apply. It was a result of attending a local info session in an un-air conditioned room on a very miserable hot/humid day (those experiences stick with you) and the fact that Reed doesn’t have a traditional grading system.
@CAMidwestMom That’s so awesome! The GOOD kind of surprise. @Skates76 My understanding is that it was a name dispute but that the scholarship itself may not have really disappeared. I hope that’s the case for your sake!
Speaking of political leanings of schools, i have mentioned before that S is more conservative than liberal. Some schools he applies to are way too far left yet he says he doesn’t care.
Wow the great news keeps rolling in and its hard to do my work and trying to keep up with all the posts. So that is why I have been posting more general congratulations lately. Super Awesome Congrats to all receiving great acceptances, scholarships and all around happy surprises. So happy for all. XOXO’s to all receiving deferrals, etc!
D’s saltiness towards her deferral from Northeastern is waning and we are getting back to the current business at hand (holiday prep…thank you @undercovermom1 for the link to the article because it gave me a couple of surprise Christmas gifts for D. S14 just told me tonight that she was lamenting to him that she wouldn’t have much under the tree…boy is she in for a surprise…LOL) school work, EC’s, and work. D is very excited that she got a few monetary bonuses at work this week.
I love getting back and reading all these post (even though it is occupying way too much of my time daily) because all you guys give and my D so much in support, encouragement, etc. Thanks for being there - you have all been more than you can imagine!
I’m glad we’re not whipping the backs of the knuckles of the kids who were accepted to the single-digit SCEA programs. I would not want to diminish their joy or the honor of the achievement. I was getting a little worried there for a moment.
@labegg: High School Musical came up in my house tonight. Apparently W2exit had a moment and broke into full blown musical mode at school today, and while most kids looked at her like she was coo-coo, one girl with a really rad spirit joined in. It made for a nice moment, and a nice feeling, I’m sure.
