Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Good luck to your dd @Ballerina016 and ouch @bouders !! Our last app was $80 and it’s a huge reach. Tempting to just forget it, but we are all in now.

I envy your essay writing children! I cannot get S to write an essay for local scholarships. The same essay can be used for multiple applications. I think he has a good shot at these scholarships since it is for his HS only and is specific to his major. :((

Solidarity with those who are 1) trying to figure out best plan of attack with FAFSA, 2) bemoaning the final push with applications, and 3) trying to figure out what is missing/misplaced/misunderstood/misused.

D just woke up after having more fun last night than a girl who has four applications due today should have had. Good news, H and S left to go lobster diving all day so no bowl game noise keeping her off her game. My cheerleader mommy plan is to set her up on my new zero gravity chair on the lanai, feed her a toasted bagel with extra cream cheese, and maybe hide her phone until she hits the submit button. My guess is I’ll be moving between good cop, bad cop, and shoulder to cry on as the day progresses.

Good luck to your D! @palm715

@palm715 “lobster diving”? What an exotic activity! Regarding hiding her phone, just from mom to mom, they can text using laptop now. Basically everything they can do on the phone, they can do on laptop when we think they are working really hard.

I feel for you parents/kids still doing applications. D pretty much decided that 10 was enough and just stopped. And she’s right. She has two affordable options already. So we’re off to the movies.

@Ballerina016, I thought the same about lobster diving, and as a New England native, was thinking, “That’s going to be so COLD!” but then I realized palm is in Hawaii, so this would be a very fun activity, plus free lobster for dinner!

Good luck to you with procrastinating students!

Hello, 2016!

@palm715 - methinks you should bring lobster to the BBQ. I’m drooling!

@Mysonsdad - it may not feel like it at the moment, but I think everything is going to work out just fine for your S, with his conscientious dad as his advocate.

My S submitted his 1/1 app, hooray and whew! He has 2 last schools on his list with a 1/3 deadline. Guess we’re working through the final hours before school starts up on Monday. I guess our vacation will have to wait until after May 1st!

I can’t even imagine how much work my son would have had if he applied to more colleges than he did . Looking forward to the end of essays.

They are called slipper lobster, look like a really big cockroach, and you can only get about three bites out of one lobster. I think the thrill is from the hunting, not the gathering, in this case.

@Ballerina016 I kinda knew about the laptop being an extension of the the phone, but I was trying to fool myself. I will be thrilled if at some point today D comes to the same conclusion as @sseamom 's D and says enough is enough.

Best of luck in the final push, @MuggleMom @Ballerina016 and @palm715. And congrats on being done @sseamom and @bouders and others whose students recently concluded their apps.

At our NYE party last night there was a surprising amount of mingling and other non-video-game time among the young people. The college sophomores were talking with the grownups, the high school seniors were apparently comparing notes while playing pool. There were noises that my S16 should apply to one of the LACs that dropped off his list because our guest list included one current student and one likely student. But he apparently didn’t get the message, so I guess we are still done. And apply that energy to finishing the work that is due at school next week (technically not assigned over break but of course that’s really when it needs to be done – can’t wait for that to end!)

@momofsmartdancer :

Welcome! I see you’ve jumped right in with the questions that are on almost all our minds. This thread is kind of like, “You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers!” (Or, we’re all flailing in the same pond…)

Hope you find you like it here.

S hit submit on his 1/1 app at 1am last night. He is working with my sister right now on his essays for his 1/3 and 1/5 app essays. My plan for today is to get the final touches on our business bookkeeping so that I can get out info to our accountant for a quick turn around. I want to file the Profile and FAFSA with real, not estimated data.

Well S finished his 5th and last app today. Only one small glitch left – he checked his portal a few days ago and the college had not logged in his transcript (which HS sent on 12/8). So S emailed admissions counselor, who emailed back saying that the college had not received it yet. So S will have to get HS to resend on Monday. Ugh. There is a 1/5 deadline so the transcript may not be technically late if they do it right away or perhaps just a few days. Maybe it’s not such a bad thing and the counselor will get in touch personally with admissions counselor (they have a long and strong prior relationship through many students at the HS applying to and attending this University).

Hope it gets straightened out @momofzag

Congrats to everyone whose child has finished applications today! Good luck to those students who are still working and hugs to their parents.

Really enjoyed our virtual barbecue last night and very glad that @palm715’s husband and son had not yet caught any cockroach lobsters (better marketing needed!).

Welcome, @momofsmartdancer! My D16 is also a dancer.

Well now that I have had time to think, I think I am just going to send the 3rd SAT score to the schools S reported. It is a good score, just not as good as his other scores. It is still above the 50 percentile for all but one or two schools. I think it may affect the super duper reach he is applying to. One school said no matter how many you send they only look at the highest 2.

On another note, here is who I rooted for in Bowl games (excluding Clemson because I missed most of the game) UCLA, USC, Notre Dame and Iowa. I rooted for the Bruins in the Winter Classic (ice hockey). They all lost.

Finally, how close does FAFSA have to be to the actual amounts? My income is pretty close to last year.

@Mysonsdad Please feel free to root for Alabama on Jan 11.

@Mysonsdad I think I have your luck picking the winner. All TV shows I like to watch normally get canceled after the first season.

638 new messages! Wow - the happiest of holidays (all of them!) to all of you, with joys distributed to each according to the particular holidays celebrated! We’re back from 10 days’ travel to visit family, just in time for S to whip together the last details of his last two RD apps. One in, a little bit more of the 2nd to go.

And then the FAFSA (sigh) and a couple of scholarship apps.

I have much laundry to do, and need to think about dinner tonight (we’re keeping it very low-key at home - black-eyed peas WILL happen, the rest is still fuzzy) - but first will go read all of y’all’s messages. Hope it’s been a beautiful and peaceful holiday break for everyone - the last one with our '16s still all living at home!

I’ve been offline a couple of days and there were hundreds of posts! Happy New Year to all. Hope everyone got or is getting through the 1/1 app deadlines. We had a New Year’s Eve wedding last night. A childhood friend of my DD’s so the whole family was invited. Lots of fun. The bride and groom met first semester freshman year of college and have been together for 5 years. They are a young couple but really wonderful together. The impact for my DS (in part) was that he had to have most of his applications finished prior to Thanksgiving (9 of them). He had one more, for a reach school, that required more pushing than should have been necessary, to finish. He submitted that one last Sunday, on 12/28. Now he just has one scholarship app but it is a very challenging one, for a reach school, so I hope he can complete it. He is not as confident as he should be with his research and writing skills. He has always been a person of few words so all this writing about himself has not been “fun” or growth inspiring for him.

I can’t respond to all the posts I just read but let me just say that I am IN on the virtual BBQ and/or cocktails. We have a long wait ahead of us as DS did not apply to any EA schools. He got into one safety back in Sept. and will hear from another by Feb. 1. But he won’t hear from the other 8 schools until March and I am already feeling that March will be stressful. DS has spring break the last week in March, when he will hear from a lot of these schools so we can’t use that time to re-visit any.
