Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@petrichor11 Thank you for the cookies. I’ll ignore the tiger shape.

@me29034 Auburn has tigers too. Isn’t that one of your other schools ?

CSS submitted. I hope the financial aid folks have a good sense of humor. Dh was getting punchy toward the end so when they come to the “how much can your parents pay” question … well, it made me laugh, anyway.

@carolinamom2boys No Auburn is not on D’s list. There are panthers at Pitt and cougars ar Charleston, but no tigers anywhere that I’m aware of.

Sorry , I got your daughter mixed up @me29304

“…which was the highest score in the class, and with a curve he made an A, but he knows that won’t work on the AP exam.”

I can’t interrupt my daughter right now because she’s grumbling, but I seem to remember her saying that on the AP Calc BC exam a grade, or percentage, of what I thought of as being rather low, could merit a ‘5’, and no one was expected to get absolutely 100% of the exam questions correct. I don’t know about the curve, because I am absolutely mathematically challenged, but I think everything else from the aggregate of the highest scores is graded downward from there (or, in my mind, ‘on the curve’).

Anyone here can clear this up?

@LKnomad: That was most informative, thank you.

I do have to say that the essay I read posted here at CC today was also nonsensical, but cohesively laid out, covered, I think, different periods in history, and probably layered in something that felt like it “related” to the student’s experiential knowledge. But the minute I took a look at it I called B.S.

I don’t think my kids have ever known about this ability to basically take a walk on the wild side with the SAT essays. My daughter blew it out of the water, but I am wondering how much more simple her life might have been in preparation had I been able to guide her toward more of a structural based format rather than a content-heavy one.

Miles to go before I sleep. Miles to go before I sleep.

To All: So I’m in good company? Thank you for chiming in, makes me feel less lost.

@carolinamom2boys : My youngest son is notorious for doing his homework and crumpling it into a ball under books and binders in his backpack and/or locker.

When I asked him in 5th or 6th grade just what his problem was that he would sit down and do the work but refuse to hand it in, he asked me, “Well, what does she [the teacher] need it for? You can tell from the class time that I know what I’m talking about, so I obviously did the work. It’s my work; I’m gonna keep it. If she wants it, she can do her own.”

I will use this space to invoke one of the more saucy comments from AsleepAtTheWheel to suggest what my reaction was.

Sounds like he is cut from the same cloth as my S13. Once his teacher didn’t think he put forth adequate effort on an assignment and told him he could either take an F or redo it. He said he’d be fine with the F. Teacher came unhinged and called us and we made him redo it. But really I was thinking ‘well you shouldn’t have given him those choices if you didn’t want him to pick one.’ He’s doing just fine now but still can frustrate us sometimes with his logic.

Had a sad thing happen today, in S class there is a student who is autistic. I got a message from his mom today asking me how does she sign her S up and pay for the SAT.

In regards to UC’s and FAFSA, I listed one UC first, then his second UC fourth behind two privates. According to the UC site it says to list a UC first. Listing more than one won’t hurt.

Interesting article in the LA Times today, more that 119,000 students have applied for UCLA and over 101,000 applied to UC Berkeley.

That’s so funny, @Waiting2exhale, I would laugh out loud except that it is hitting too close to home. My S16 wouldn’t even bother to do the work, on the theory that the teacher already understands the essay prompt so she doesn’t need his help. And on S14’s first SAT essay (in 7th grade) he wrote two sentences, along the lines of “After reading the provided quote, I agree that statement A is more appropriate. It is pretty self-explanatory, actually, the quote says it all.”

And right now S16 is playing homework chicken – delaying the start as long as possible to see who flinches first, his parents or his morning alarm clock.

@CAMidwestMom : “He said he’d be fine with the F. Teacher came unhinged and called us and we made him redo it.”

I am crying, I am laughing so hard. Fantastic.

My husband would have in no way supported me in having our son redo the work for the higher grade. Glad you have a partner in that.

Roll Tide!

We are also ACT test takers. No SAT templates for us…but loved reading that essay.

Is there some kind of game going on?? We’re off to watch last night’s episode of Downton Abbey…

I was wondering the same thing lol!

Thanks @carolinamom2boys I hope they turn it around. But not worried it it doesnt happen at this point.

D and I only really started watching college football when she became interested in schools like Alabama and Clemson. This is tough, she’s been accepted to both. She prefers Clemson but it’s difficult to ignore how great a deal the Alabama scholarship is… She’s also been accepted to Auburn and loves it too. So - War Eagle?

But D is wearing her Clemson shirt, and even her good-deal-loving dad is wearing orange!

Ah well. Good game, Alabama fans!

Good game Alabama.
