Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Hang in there @LKnomad ! There has to be the reward of some CA sunshine in there somewhere for both of you.

@mysonsdad I really hope your DC gets some good news soon. I am sure he will land where he is meant to be but it is about time he was clued in as to where that is!! Maybe the colleges need to start notifying by text…,

Sorry @crowlady . I try and keep everyone’s children’s straight, but this aging, tired brain has trouble sometimes . Congrats to your son.

@Cheeringsection my D will NOT phone anyone. If she needs to make a call, I literally have to sit with her to make sure it happens. One example–she wanted to get her nails done for prom. She went 2 towns away because that was the closest salon that allowed you to schedule online (without calling!)

Congratulations @crowlady and @petrichor11 !

Congrats, @crowlady !

Good morning, all! Well, I think it’s finally winter now in the northeast unfortunately. Brrrrrr… I’ve lived in the northeast all my life, but I think I become less resistant to the cold with each passing year. When I was in college in Boston, I used to leave for class with wet hair and it would freeze, but it never bothered me. I can’t even let me hair stay wet when I’m inside now.

@itsjustschool No, it was UMass-Amherst. I’m pleased because it may be an underappreciated gem, especially for his interests. He doesn’t seem as thrilled, perhaps because of the weather, because he feels rejected from comp sci, or because he’s still prefers Tulane. Visits are going to be very important.

@RyanG1207 I agree on all counts about the weather! But as I mentioned here a while back, I’m enjoying the portable fridge aka my trunk.

Congrats @crowlady ! U MA is beautiful when it’s not freezing.

@crowlady Congratulations on Umass Amherst. We live in MA could not get my D to apply there. She wants to be far away.

Phone calls and emails are difficult for my daughter too. She has called colleges twice this fall and both times I had to be sitting right next to her to prompt what she was saying. I have also dictated emails to her but I feel that is educational. She needs to learn how to structure an e-mail so that an adult will read and respond. She is getting better about this.

@texaspg: “…a small niche of your own…”

I like that wording.

I have become pampered with the nice fall and mild winter we have had so far. Well 10F is too dang cold.

Add to that the need to shovel the driveway. Not my favorite time of year.

Congrats @crowlady and @petrichor11! Welcome @frenchtoastlover!

@lknomad I’m really surprised that the UC’s have time to dig that deep with all those applications. Fingers crossed that all this hoopla means acceptances.

D has a scholarship phone interview today and her last college application to complete by Friday. The app is for a school that we cannot afford without significant merit aid, but it’s one of her top choices and her stats put her in merit range. I’m just crossing my fingers and toes that it’s the really high merit award!

Good luck @Undercovermom1 !

Driving home from dropping D off at school this morning it was SO dark! Even though sunrise was at around 8 a.m. by 8:30 I swear it was even darker. And rainy, and foggy. I came thisclose to booking a trip to one of D’s most southern college choices so we could “take a second look” when in reality it would be all about being in some warm sunshine! This Seattle weather drives me crazy sometimes. I haven’t seen the actual sun in 3 days.

Hello all, I’m another lurker come to join the party. I have a D15 in her first year of college, a D16 eager to leave for college and S19 who is dreading having the full force of his parent’s attention before he too leaves.

Welcome @mom23travelers! It’s a nice group here.

Welcome @mom23travelers!

Welcome @mom23travelers I have a DS 19 as well who has the same concerns

Welcome @mom23travelers

@sseamom Don’t come to SC to get away from the rain. You’d be wasting your money .

@petrichor11 @crowlady Congratulations on the acceptances.

My DS is also anti-email. Even my DD has told him that emailing is critical in college. A few weeks ago, DS received a very nice, long, handwritten letter from the admissions rep for his major at one of the large state schools he is applying to. It touted the school, where kids with his major went on to grad school and gave examples of companies graduates work for. It mentioned “talented students like you” which I think was a hint about the honors college and invited him to contact them if DS has questions or is planning a visit (which we are). I told DS he had to respond by email. He was very resistant and didn’t seem to get that this letter was not like the blast emails or marketing materials a lot of colleges send. Some one looked at his app and tried to make a more personal connection. Eventually,I sat with him while he wrote the email. I just don’t get how the kids are so resistant to email. Then again, my DS is the VERY silent type and it is hard to get him to say much, text, etc. I do think this has hurt him in school as teachers do question his engagement in what is going on even though he is there every day and paying attention.
